2008 - C25K program :) WELCOME!!

HI all! I thought I would try this but I did Wk1D1 and had to stop because of my shin splints.:headache: It seems like everytime I try walking or running I end up with shin splints! I'll take time off and try it again when I am better. Anybody with any suggestions?

Definately stretching (like mentioned above) but I find that I get shin splints when I run too fast. I have to keep my pace slow and steady.

My first post here, and I hope it's not too off topic. I committed to the DL 5k on Aug. 30 and was under the impression that it was a walk/run (which means you can do either or both, right?) It would be my first 5k ever. I planned on walking it. I was sure (since I began a couple weeks ago, from couch potato status) I could do it. I've been walking on a treadmill for 2 miles at 3.5 mph at a 1% incline, bicycled 3 miles a week ago, and bicycled 5 miles yesterday. The info on the DL 5k site says you must walk a 15 minute mile (which should be 4 mph, right?), otherwise they pick you up and take you to the end. I'm just wondering if I've bitten off more than I can chew. I thought 4 mph was a fast walk. Is it more like a slow jog?

Anybody out there who's done previous DL 5ks?

I tend to walk at 4 or 4.5 on the treadmill, so for me it is a walk, but I am nearly 6 ft tall with long legs.

As for me, I am done with my multitudness (yes not really a word I know) of trips and ready to get back into running. I am going to start at week 5 today after work. I have not run in 6 weeks so hopefully I can do!

Well I re-did week 5 yesterday and oddly enough ti was easy! I wasn't huffing or puffing or anything. I was so surprised! My calves are a little stiff and my mid back hurts, so I must have been holding myself funny, but I am thrilled.

Good stuff, you are rolling now. :thumbsup2

Hey everyone. I began this program this week.

I used to love to run but that was 25 yrs and 70 pounds ago so building back up has not been easy. I had been starting to run in the spring but then developed shin splints so I backed off and have just been walking.

I downloaded the Podrunner series by DJ BeatSmith and so far so good although as I mentioned it is only Wk 1. Hopefully this program will get me back into running again...I really miss it.

Been a couple weeks....how is everyone doing? Any stragglers still on the plan?

As for me, I am smack dab in the middle in the "there's no more walking breaks" weeks. Still have not experienced that good feeling from running, but I guess that takes time. My issues is actually boredom. I am not to the point where I can just go and run (and know how fast and far I have run), so I am confined to a track or treadmill. I have taken to watching Dr. Phil or Oprah (depending on what time I get to the gym), which is somewhat distracting, but I really need to find other ways to occupy my mind.

Ugh I am totally off and will have to start over at the end of september. I was doing well til my DF who ran with me hurt himself. Still did well for another week or two when my life got REALLY complicated with out of state interviews and eventually a move. Now I am living the hotel life and in a couple weeks I will be going on vacation but plan to start again after that! I don't want to end up hurting myself before I go tho ;)

Update:

I did it!!! Completed the Disneyland (my first) 5k yesterday! DH participated in it too and was great at being a pace setter; he had us doing a 14-minute-mile pace. I walked the whole way, except a few sporadic jogs to catch up to DH. It was so awesome, I'm thinking about doing it next year!

Well I made it to Week 4 so yay me! :cool1:

I think I gotta be careful though cause I can feel twinges where my shin splints were before. The other thing that I have to be careful about is that the series is more about time than distance. They are assuming that I will be done with 5K in a half hour, so far that is not happening....

I'm joining in. Anyone else still working or just beginning. I did Day 1 Week 1 yestereday. And it is the first time I attempted it and wasn't hating every minute of it. I went much slower, my job was probably most people's walk. But it worked. I used to run track in high school, but that was about 19 years ago. I'd love to get back into running! So here goes.

Welcome! You can do it!

Hi! I just found this part of the DisBoards and this thread. I've just finished week 4 of the program, which (on the advice of my personal trainer sister) I am repeating. No worries though, I feel so so much better. I've always walked, did yoga, etc. but somewhere along the line decided I "couldn't" run. Sometimes it's good to prove yourself wrong. :cool1:

I started over. 3rd day of week 1 today! Seems really easy this time... not sure if that's because I am starting over or because I am using the treadmill instead of outside. The treadmill doesn't quite seem like running - oh well

Hey there - I am resurrecting this thread! After November I got serious and am back on the wagon! Halfway through week 5 now - just have the 20min to go. I've had life trying to set me back a lot. Had the Norwalk Virus and missed a couple days but just got back in it and did one day over. Had an ankle issue and got some advice on how to correct my running to get rid of that. I am headed to the world sunday and have convinced myself I will visit the treadmills there and on the boat. If I can fit it in around work and sickness I should be able to handle a measly couple of hours while on vacation. How is everyone else doing?

So how does the C25K work? I'd like to maybe consider doing the 1/2 again next January - Seems like getting back into the gear with something like this might be good.

Hi Melanie! It's a 10 or so week program where you build up to running a 5k (or 30 minutes - I am going by time cause it's easier and I run slow). You can find the program by googling "couch potato to 5k"

I started again last thursday, but then got sick over the weekend and will have to start again in a day or too. I want to register for a 5K because I think that would help me to stick to it.
