2008 - C25K program :) WELCOME!!

Week 4 is trying its best to kick my behind. I'm keeping up with it so far (just did day 2) but it is TOUGH! The only way for me to get through it is to run really slowly. The good news is that I now know it's possible to run 5 minutes without stopping, which will help going into Week 5. The bad news, is there's a big difference between 5 minutes (Day 1) and 8 (Day 2) and a HUGE difference between 8 minutes and 20 (the dreaded W5D3 workout). Why such a huge jump next week? It's not doing much to improve my confidence!

You can do it! I tend to run slow too...my time was slower W5D3 than the prior days, and I ran it all! But, I have to go slow right now to make it through. Speed will come later. Trust yourself, you can do it!

Way to go guys! You are all doing great! Keep up the work!

Me? I've about had it with W5D3. I think I have attempted, and failed, it 6 times now. Last night I did 2.6 miles, 37 minutes. I ran a collective amount of 27 minutes, my most ever in one attempt, but they weren't consecutive. I had to stop for a couple 2-3 minute walk breaks in between the running. And it bugs me that I do. But maybe this is the way it will be. I still have to say to myself "Self, you couldn't run to the end of the street a few months ago, don't beat yourself up over a short walk break girl" . Our first 5K is in a couple weeks, I'm nervous!

Allyson,

Try to run SLOWER... thats the only way I can do this right now. My run speed is only 4.3 or 4.4 (I'm on the treadmill). My walk speed is 3.7-3.8 but with more running than walking now (I'm in week six now) it does get easier. I am going for TIME (doing this for 30 minutes, or how ever long that day's workout is). I figure speed and faster times will come over time. I am going to do my first 5k in less than four weeks! I figure if I walked it, I could do it in an hour or so, so anything better than that is a major improvement! I've NEVER run before (well not in the past 25-28 years, lol, i tried in high school but got shin splints so bad, i gave up). Keep at it. I did manage to run the 20 minutes non stop, but my speed was only 4.3 that day, a slow, but to me doingable pace.

I skipped the dreaded two miles and went right on to week 6. I wanted to do W6D2 yesterday, but I was ill on Sunday and my body was still tired, so I just ran one- walked one for 30 minutes.
I am just the opposite of you guys. I refuse to go slower. I run at 6 and walk at 3.5. I was walking at 4, but it was hurting my shins, so I cut it back to 3.5. It has taken my longer to get to each milestone, but when I finish I will be doing a 5k in 30 minutes. Since I am doing distance, I would be running forever if I went slower. Now I can tell myself that each lap is only 2.5 minutes. I can do anything for 2.5 minutes!

WOW thats amazing!!! Congrats. I cannot imagine going that fast! Maybe some day, but it's goign to take time on my part. This old body has only been exercising since March (after 40some years of taking it easy, lol). :rotfl:

That's exactly what I was going to say!

Thanks ladies! I already feel I am going at a snail's pace though and I have to keep faster than a 16 minute pace for the Half in January or I'll get swept. I just ordered a Galloway book and re-ordered the Bingham book from my library. Both have Run/Walk plans for Half Marathons. I really think Run/Walk might be the best method for me.

Until then I'll keep plugging along!

Allyson, even if you slow down some now, I still think you will be fine come January. Right now I think the program is all abot the endurance....and once that is under control, you will definately pick up speed. If I have anything to say about it, I will be at the 1/2, too. We can do it!

I did it! I completed W1D2 correctly. I was able to walk at a brisk pace and jog the intervals for the complete 30 minutes. :woohoo: Granted, it's a slow pace but fast for me. I did the first mile in 15 minutes but by the end of the 30 minutes I averaged a 17 minute mile. Next up is Friday, I'm confident that I'll do the whole set at a 15 minute mile pace.::yes::

I think that was my problem last week. I kept trying to work on speed and this week I've had to redo the W1 sets because I couldn't finish the last 10 minute intervals. But now with W1D2 done correctly at a moderate pace for me, I think I can finally complete W1 come Friday :)

Good job Martha. You are doing great. Hey 15 minute mile is really good!

Congrats to everyone who's making progress! I just finished W4D3 this morning and feel pretty good. Worlds better than I'd felt after W4D2. It's nice to see progress, especially when I think back to how I struggled with Week 1.

Week 5, I'm ready for ya!

W1D3 - I did it again at a 17 minute mile pace. I don't think I will move on to week 2 until I can accomplish week 1 without any problems. I had to go slower toward the end. I wonder if I'm trying to go too fast too soon. What pace is considered a brisk walk? I start out at 4.0 mph and my jog is 4.5. Although toward the end, my brisk walk slows down to about 3.7 and my jog is more like my brisk walk (4.0).

Hey all runners! Long time no post! Actually, I have just been active on my team thread, etc.

Looks like lots of progress! Way to go!

And for those who are new...keep going and stick with it! IT WORKS! I started in late January...and I had never ever been a runner before. Even when I was at my most fit (I was an aerobics instructor and fitness trainer in a previous life) I could never even run a mile.

I heard about C25K right here on the WISH boards and gave it a try.

This week for my long run, I did 7 miles. You read that right! If it can work for me, it can work for ANYONE.

I am so proud of all of you for having the courage to start! :goodvibes

Finished up W3D3, kinda nervous about W4. I do notice a difference, I have more energy for sure. Long ways to go before the 1/2 in March, but one step at a time as the saying goes.

It's so awesome to come and read everyone's successes, it really gives me the confidence to keep going. :)

Hello, fellow C25K'ers!! How is everyone? I completed W8D3 tonight. I can't believe it. It feels like just yesterday I was doing W1D1. I can't believe how far I have come! I have been a bit stressed about what I will do when I don't have a program anymore...do I did find another, and that should help me out. I just can't believe I am so close to being a graduate!:cool1:

Good for you! I sort of ditched the program and started doing my own thing. I ran, and finished, my first ever 5K today! It was great and I am so proud of myself and my DH for doing it! We are going to keep building miles each week and in late August start our Half Marathon training using a John Bingham plan.
For me I discovered on this journey that run/walk is a good method for me. Today I did a 5-6R/2W and it felt good. I finished the 3.1 miles in 37:40.

All the best to you! I hope you all get to where you want to be!

Allyson :)

I start W6 tomorrow. I am hooked, and looking forward to it. The 2 mile run was hard, but I can tell the improvement from when I first started.

I was a little nervous about losing a program, and a good running friend emailed me a training schedule for the 13K in Oct based off of the Penguins plans. I guess at some point I will need to be able to just run without a program, but I find I do a lot better with a schedule and a journal to hold me accountable.

Congrats to all the graduates, soon to be graduating, and those who have just decided to begin. It really is amazing how much better you feel after a few weeks. :)

Hi all! This is my first post EVER on the WISH boards! DF and I just decided to start the C25K program! We went out last night and bought running shoes and a few other things (stopwatch)... and once I've spent money I'm serious. I even did a little "test run" today to see how long a minute felt when running. I am most nervous about the jump to 3 min.

I am not incredibly out of shape... I work out at the gym about 4 days a week (about an hour each time) doing pilates, strength training, etc. I used to do cardio on the bike but didn't find it enough of a challenge and on the elliptical but it was BORING. I've been feeling the itch to run for awhile... but I've NEVER been a runner. Even in high school I don't think I could make a lap.

Anyways the first week doesn't seem like it will be incredibly difficult so I look forward to building stamina. I might be moving and losing my gym (at work so I can go at lunch... CHEAP and good FREE classes) so I need something else to keep me in shape. Plus as much as I've built up muscle mass I can't get really "toned" without the cardio.

I've also put on almost 20 lbs since discovering free dining last september... and am going again this year so I need to be prepared. I am really excited about this new venture and hope to keep tracking my progress here!

:welcome: to WISH! You will love C25K. Don't worry about keeping up with the program, it is designed to work. I was a total couch potato before starting. Now, I graduated the program last week. I am not quite up to the 3 miles, but I can do 2 1/2. For me, this is huge. You can do it!
