2008-2009 Cheer Parent Thread!!!!

Keep us updated on Cheersport for those of you that are there!!

Well, as a newbie to both cheer and Cheersport, it was a blast, probably the most fun Nationals we have attended for the past few years.

The talent was so much fun to watch!

Now I need a vacation!

Sounds like everyone at Cheersport is having a blast!!! The teams are full of skills and it is exciting from what I am reading on the boards. I wish we were there again this year........

Brenda.....I met some Sparks mom's yesterday. I was asking for you but then we had to give up our seats to some of your parents. I kept tryiing to get back to where you were all sitting but it was horrible for finding a seat!!! I ended up sitting way in the back with my younger DD (she hurt her ankle in soccer) and ate popcorn!! We then went up front for when Steph's team did their exhibition. She only marked all of her stunts!! LOL!! Her base was missing and then we just found out another one of her bases can not be at practice the week before Dallas!! I AM STRESSING for her on this one!! It is a new group and they are having difficulty hitting the tick tocks (the new base does not know how to release for her to tick tock!!).

How did Ryleigh's team do?

What did you think of Jam LIVE?? I thought it was strange and different. Not sure I would enjoy having to hang around there all day (seating was horrible and all seats were being saved). The kids seem to have fun walking out on the 'red carpet'.

Keep us updated on Cheersport for those of you that are there!!

AHHHHHH!!! That was YOU! That mom came and found me and told me someone was looking for me! I was all over the place...I did hang around just about all day...got there to see my friend's daughter on Minis and left after our Junior 4 disaster! I ended up way in the back towards the end of the night...I did catch Steph's team from back there(I could see way better from there than up front anyway!)...I was bummed when I saw her group marking :(

Ryleigh's team did awesome! They won their division and also were co-grand champs of level two with a senior team!!! They rocked it out...the coaches made some changes after Athletic and they really shined yesterday...I was so happy for them...they needed it!

Jamlive was definitley different...the kids LOVED it though! Being the instant gratification kind of gal that I am I did like getting the scores right away!!! It just seemed loooooong LOL!!!

I'm so mad that I missed you yet AGAIN!!!

We had fun at Cheersport but Atlanta was so expensive! And we only live about three hours away in Columbia, SC. Our youth level 1 finished 7th out of 13. Pretty good considering only one girl on the team has ever cheered before and we have quite a few six and seven year olds on the team. It is hard for them to compete with teams that have mainly 10 and 11 year olds. But they did a clean program which is what they wanted to do. Our Juniors L2 finished 11th out of 13 - not sure what happened as they were 8th on day one and thought they had a good routine on day 2. Our Sr Coed 3 was in 4th place on day one and ended up winning! Woo hoo! We missed it because we went ahead and drove home after the youth awards. The Seniors weren't performing for another 3 hours and the kids (6,9 and 11) were already getting antsy. Next week is a small competition in Savannah, Ga for only one night. Which is good because my hotel budget is about gone! I didn't see any of Goofy's teams perform but I did check how y'all were doing on the leader boards. So I was thinking about you!

Glad you all had fun at Cheersport. I have been reading about much of the drama that had happened down there. Steph's coach also told her team about one of the girls (allegedly) spitting in a rival coaches face!! She was shocked (as most of us are).

I had been reading how the judging was awful and the booing at awards and the mix up of winners? UGH!! Glad I was not there for the drama.

But, as we can all agree, cheerleading is expensive. Steph's former gym always made them go on the package plans to all the away competitions. Her present gym is much different with regards to that and I do see a big savings. We usually get offered a few hotels to choose from (almost like value, moderate, etc) and we are given freedom to arrive at various times (almost like within a 24 hour frame not like we need to arrive by 3 PM local time which limits flights). We are leaving for Dallas in less than 2 weeks and I am saving about $300 on the hotel package part and used frequent flyer miles for this one. This will probably be the cheapest Nationals I have ever attended!!! LOL!! Mabye I will spring for that $60 sweatshirt (being her last year!).

Brenda........sorry I missed you. Mabye I will see you at WSF in April!! That is our next comp after Dallas and before Worlds!!

Congratulations on your successes this past weekend everyone. Good luck in the following weeks.

Congrats! I didn't get to see your teams either, but as you did, checked the leader board and the results when we got back to the hotel. We were cheering for you in spirit if not in actual person!

I had all these plans to go see all these teams, but didn't realize how big it was. Most of our teams were in E, F and G, so we just planted ourselves there :goodvibes

We are happy with our results. Most of our teams cracked the top 5, which we felt was outstanding for their first time at Cheersport and on the East Coast with all you outstanding teams! A few of our teams cracked the top 3, so that was a bonus. And our Coed 5 got their World bid so, that is done. Now crossing our fingers that the J5 will get theirs in Dallas. Otherwise, they have their bid to IALC, so it will either be LA or Orlando for them.

Signs posted at Cheersport said 42 States represented. There were a few from CA as well as other western states. Oh and Canada was there too!:goodvibes

We are Colorado, so not quite East Coast, but in the western states.

I can't reiterate it enough, most of the teams were great sports. We met so many nice people.

Edited to add. WOW...I just found my way to the Cheersport boards or whatever the boards are that are linked to their site. Never in a million years did we ever see anything like what is being reported there. Everybody we met was so nice. We did run into some groups that were razzing others, basic silly competitive nonsense, but it was nothing compared to what is being rumored.

We had a blast. And I can't say enough how great it was to watch so many spectacular teams. We just don't see that very much out here. So, it was a treat to see the best of the best and so many of them.

We are really hoping the gym decides to go back next year.

We have the "arrive by" rules and we have to be in the same hotel, etc. It does make it expensive. But so are any other travel teams in other sports. But luckily we have enough fund raising opportunities like Bingo that will completely cover all expenses if you are willing to put in the time.

Yeah a lot of drama, but you are so right about it being "alleged". Millions of stories going around. Most of them not true or a distortion of what happened. The story I know is a pretty watered down version of all the hype but I'm not going to post it because it is petty and can be distorted once again that it is better to leave it alone and let it go away. :thumbsup2

My daughter's team did pretty well, Sr open 4 Comets. They came in 6th out of 11. They hit an awesome performance on day 1 and on day 2 a girl was injured in warm ups and could not go out with them. They re arranged things two mintues before hitting the mats and their routine hit with two touchdowns in standing tumbling. I don't think they had their usual sparkle and energy and I can't blame them but at least they held their place.

Our big story of the weekend was our small sr 5. National Champions and a partial paid bid to worlds! :cool1: They went into it hoping for 3rd at best and a bid and they won it all! They were awesome both days and hit the routine perfect both days with all the difficulty still in it. I could not be happier if it was my own child on that team! A real Cinderella story! It's nice to know that it can be any team and day and see it actually happen!

:yay: :yay: :cheer2: :cheer2:
Congrats on both your daughter's team and your Sr 5 team! I wholeheartedly agree that everybody had a chance there. We were an unknown, 1st time group coming in and we were pleased with our results.

I also have to give a HUGE Kudos to the Cheersport organization in general, especially in the way they embraced the special needs teams.

We were actually ranked for the first time, so it was great to get the feedback. And yet, despite the rankings, Cheersport honored each and every one of the cheerleaders by giving them a medal and one of those great jackets. The kids were so excited and it was so wonderful of Cheersport to honor every one of the special athletes for all the hard work they put into their routines. It was a very special awards ceremony. I just wish all the teams could be honored like that, but then it wouldn't be a competition anymore.

And not only did they give the kids the jackets, but they hosted a pizza party for all the teams and parents up in the Murphy ballroom on Saturday night. It was so nice to meet so many of the other parents from across the country. The kids had a blast, dancing and singing karaoke on the stage.

It was a big undertaking, especially since there was a record 22 special needs teams there this year. And much, much appreciated by the parents!!!!!!

We went to Diamond Cheer and Dance in Savannah over the weekend. Youth, Juniors and Seniors all won first place and Grand Champions in their levels. It was a fun weekend. Savannah is supposed to be the most haunted city in the US. We went on a ghost tour Saturday night. One of the moms took pictures of some strange objects in a window of a museum attic that is supposedly haunted. Things that were not there in one frame and clearly there in the next!

I will check them out Brenda!!

Addicted2Disney......a BIG congratulations on the wins!!! See you at Worlds.

This has been the week from hell for my DD's team. They had to replace 5 kids adn we leave for Dallas Friday!! NOT GOOD!!

Some quit, some injured. 2 of the girls are my DD's bases and she is soooooooo upset!! She has not hit all week and she normally hits all the time. They changed her and another girl spots and stunt sequence and she is not happy about it at all, but, understands. She is hoping to get the stunt up again for Worlds!!

My heart breaks for her as she has worked so hard to learn this difficult stunt and now she can't perform it. This will be her last time in Dallas as well and I think that makes it even more upsetting to her.

Anyways...........everyone going to Dallas......GOOD LUCK!! Hope to see you there. I will have my laptop and post updates if anyone is interested!!

What a heartbreaking thing to happen! Crossing fingers and knocking on wood that everything goes smoothly in Dallas and even better at Worlds.

I would love to hear updates!

Our C5 and J5 teams will be there. C5 was 3rd at Cheersport and received their world bid, but they are also doing a last minute rework of the routine due to an injury on Sunday at a competition. They leave Thursday, so I know they can sympathize with your daughter's team!

Oh my gosh Rosemary! That's awful!!! I can't believe kids at that level from a top notch gym like Celeb quit at this point in the season!!!! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for Steph and her stunt group!!!!!

I'd love updates so post away!!!!

WE leave tomorrow.................NOT a good week for Steph and her team. They had to replace 5 kids this week. I think I mentioned it. Steph got new bases.......NOT GOOD.

I pulled up to the gym Wed night and was wondering why she was not coming out or answering her phone. So, I went in and my heart sank!! She was lying on the mat..........ROLLED her ankle............again.........but the other one!! NOT as bad as last year when she tore ligaments, but it is huge!!!

She is going to compete but has been pulled from jumps, standing tumbling and running tumbling. She is extremely bummed for a few reasons...........she has been landing her double good again, she is no longer doing tick tocks, it is her last Dallas, and a cheer coach from one of the schools she is interested in going to college will be there!!! She looks like a poster for why cheerleading is dangerous!!! LOL! Both ankles wrapped, the right one is a small brace but the left one, the new injury is an air cast!!! It nearly goes up to her knee. She is having a hard time grabbing for her scorpion with it on. I bought some black spongey tape stuff to cover the white air cast. I also bought another black brace, called a T2 which is similiar to the air cast but shorter!!

I dread the flight tomorrow..........her foot most likely will swell with the flying. We are not planning (which bums me out) to go before she competes to watch the other teams!! Dallas is huge and way too much walking. She competes at 7:32 PM Saturday night.......

So, I will update from what I hear and a small portion of what I see!!!

Please send pixie dust our way!! I just want her to hit!!:cheer2: :cheer2:

Good luck to everyone else going!!!

ohhh Rosemary.. wish I knew you better to jump on the phone with you and offer you a cheer mom's sympathetic ear! I rode home from Disney last year with my daughter's knee across my lap! ouch! she sprained her ACL/MCL walking in Disney.. yes, just walking! try to keep her ankle elevated part of the flight if ya can. it does help. My daughter has a bad ankle and she rolled it Monday night! ugh.. just landing her full beautifully and just landed funny. It's her problem spot. she's on crutches for the next few days hoping to keep it from getting worse like it did last fall. (boot on for 6 weeks due to ligament pull and fluid build up) Hoping she will be back on her feet for Spiritfest next weekend. Will you guys be going there?

Anyway.. just wanted to let ya know I totally understand.. been thinking about your daughter this past week with the new stunt group. I'll be hoping and praying all goes well for you. Hang in there!
