Cindy,
Glad to hear the follow up call went well. Amazing that 5 LIFEGUARDS exhibited no "impulse control" in this situation. Where was the one common sense guard who should have stood up and said that wasn't a good idea. Oye, teens today!
Very nice article! This was easily the best one I've read on this subject. Now I have an idea what to say when someone brings this topic up to me.ohiominnie said:Sorry guys, been out of touch. cgcw said:Karen, you seem a bit more relaxed about the kids going to summer camp than I did. If you need some support, let me know. I just went through it and I survived!!!
Cool article --- well, not the topicJust how did someone you "know" get involved in that? A celebrity. Will Mike be signing autographs next time we run into you??

I'm even more interested in this upcoming podcast. Where and when can I find it?![]()
ohiominnie said:I am pretty relaxed about them at camp. For several reasons. #1, it's a church camp, so I'm very comfortable with everyone who is there (and actually, our church "takes over" the camp for a week, so the only ppl NOT from our church are the lifeguards and the kitchen ppl....otherwise all counsellors, teen helpers, doctors/nurses, activities ppl, etc are from our church)
#2, this is the camp that mike was the doc at last year and i was a counsellor. I know how things run. I know there are options for dinner if they serve something Nick absolutely will not eat, I know the safety that goes into things like canoeing and archery.
#3, the only really NASTY thing about the camp is/was the bathrooms....but those are all REDONE this year and they rival the corian countertop and corian showerstall bathrooms that are at Fort Wilderness. And when I went to scope them out today when I dropped them off, there was someone actually CLEANING them (even though they looked clean already!)
#4, the kids are SO excited to be there and, because they know how much fun it was last year, I doubt they'll miss me much. Besides, I remember that last year kids didn't have TIME or energy to get homesick....they were too beat by the end of the day to care!
#5, it's only until Saturday! B/c the holiday was later in the week this year it's only 3 nights (last year it was 4)
Sure, I got a little choked up as I pulled out of the camp property, but I had to remember that these aren't my kids.....they are God's and I'm just borrowing them. I know that he's in control of everything there. Funny that last night I picked up a book that's been sitting on my bedside stand, unread for awhile....it was "How to be a Praying Mom." Flipped it open to the middle and read a page and it was all about how we can't cling to our kids and we have to let what happens, happen and that even though we love our kids to pieces, God loves them more and will take care of them. Doesn't mean anything bad will never happen, but I found it comforting that I stumbled across that the night before camp.
As for Mike. Long story, short....He wanted to have a link to pediascribe in his signature, and so did I. So he contacted Webmaster and DIS owner Pete Werner. Pete looked over his pediascribe site and liked how Mike wrote and invited him to do articles for the DIS. Of course, a certain MODERATOR (who will remain unnamed) gave me grief for having an outside link in my siggy so I had to say "well, PETE said it was alright"![]()

Sorry, I digress. Mike agreed and wrote an article about what to tell ppl who say "You're going to Disney.....AGAIN?" But, in light of the recent death on Rockin' Rollercoaster, Pete asked Mike to write an article on death at Disney.....so that's what you'll see up there today. I'm sure his other article will show up eventually.
And then just at that time, DIS Unplugged started up, and Mike, having a DJ voice from years being a DJ at the roller rink, snapped up that opportunity too!
Only downside....now he's talking about giving up medicine and moving to FL.![]()
cgcw said:Where were you with your words of wisdom a couple weeks ago. I definately could have used a peptalk about how God is so in control of everyone. Very, very true. I like to think that I live by what happens, happens, and that when our time is up, it's up. Being a Mom, I certainly feel for the parents who have had to bury their children -- I'm not sure that's something I could survive. I hope your children have a wonderful couple of days. I know I could never have driven Cameron to camp, as I would have camped out in the parking lot for the week. It must have been tough to leave them behind.
Very cool about Mike & writting articles. I've read some of his pediascribe articles and they are so down to earth. I'm always looking to see when your signature changes for the next topic.![]()
And, moving to Florida.Like that would be a bad thing? Maybe giving up all those years of schooling that Mike went through in order to get his medical degree, but I suspect he would be able to still be a doctor down in Florida. I suspect that's not in his plans, huh?

ohiominnie said:Well, if I remember correctly, I did give you some words of wisdom (b/c I remember telling you how tired the kids were and how busy they were kept) And I remember saying that all the mom's told me (pre-camp) how HOMESICK their dd would be and how NOT TRUE that turned out to be....even the ones who had never been away from home before (I had one Kdg'er, and then a mix of 1st and 2nd graders)
As for letting God be in control....darn it, I need to be reminded of that over and over myself so it's not always the first thing I think to tell others. I typically have to fight being in control of everything and getting it "my" way (human nature, I guess) Sometimes I get so busy with real life and my task oriented ways, that I forget the big picture.... Sorry I wasn't more helpful when you really needed it.Part of it too, is that being a homeschool mom, I'm REALLY excited for this short break.
And, again, I know they'll be safe (esp since my kids would NEVER try anything really dangerous---they're the ones to point and say "look, mom, that kid should NOT be doing that.")

I just got off the phone with the lady at DCL. She has two boats reserved for us for the first day on the island. Ladies boat will be at 1:00 - mens boat at 1:30 - she's confirming that it will be the same boat for both so those of you with children can hand them off.
Now what I will need if you want on one of the boats is you full name, cabin number and reservation number. I will forward those on to her and the ticket will be waiting in your cabin and charged directly to your room. I'd like to get her the list by this Friday (can you believe booking for concierge is this Sunday)! I'll also be pming everyone I have on the list when i get home.
Yeah - this is going to be such fun.
I'm SO glad to hear that the manager feels that something should be said to those lifeguards.cgcw said:A quick update on our pool situation.
I just heard from the manager of all of the Park District pools. Ironically, he told me that he was at that same pool about 5 p.m. on Monday and told the manager on duty they were way overstaffed for the day and it was time to send some of the lifeguards home. Apparently, the Manager on duty decided against the suggestion. This man that I spoke to said they have these kinds of problems when they are not busy enough.
First question he asked was whether or not Walker was okay.I give him credit there as he was the first who bothered.
He told me he will defnately be taking the issue up with the manager, as well as the guards. Like Gary & I feel, he also feels that as long as the guards are doing their jobs and not goofing off, there isn't a problem using the facilities on their breaks. This man also told me that these are my tax dollars being used to pay for their goofing off and that's unacceptable.
This manager said that the guards need to follow the rules set forth by the pool and apparently, in this case, they were not.
I told him how we hope that next time we go to the pool there aren't any problems. That's when he gave me his phone number to contact him if there are any issues -- now or in the future. I hope we don't, as this pool is my kid's pool of choice.
Maybe we'll head over there tonight.![]()
I'm having the same problem with Karen's link. It says page not found.cherylp3 said:I get not found when I click the link - weird.
