2 hours in the emergency room cost me......

Ok, but do you realize that one bad accident can RUIN your financial future just because you won't buy health insurance?? It can happen in the blink of an eye--car accident=$300,000+ in medical bills--how would you pay those off???? Forget the house you want, the vacations you like, forget ever getting a car loan, NOTHING. Put $100 into your vacation fund and at least get a catastrophic plan so you don't ruin your entire future.

Car accident is a bad example because our car insurance would cover that (of course, to the limitations of our policy). My insurance agent's husband died two weeks before Christmas in a car accident where a drunken, un-insured driver hit him.

Uninsured, underinsured and medical payment coverage was the first thing she sold me on up'ing above the state limitations. We both carry full coverage, as well.

If you can find a healthcare premium that a 21-year old college student in West Virginia can afford, fine. Good luck.

At the end of the day, it doesn't make sense to us. Like you said- my husband is covered. He loved the time he spent in the military but when his contract for active duty ran out, he left to better himself through college. He will more than likely go back in-- and then we'll be covered. We're lucky in that sense.

Ah, but here's the thing. If the government starts covering health care, your company no longer has to cover the major portion of your insurance. I can't speak for you, but for my company they cover 90% of my premium, I'd guess that runs into the thousands of dollars per year, multiply that by my company's 350 employees and that's a tidy sum of money. The company no longer gets the tax write off for spending that on employee health care so they pay a bit more in taxes, but still keep the bulk of it. They can now afford to pay you more, reinvest it into the company and grow, or pay their shareholders a higher dividend for those companies that are corporations. Small buisness owners could keep it as profit and raise their own pay, or again, raise their employees pay or reinvest in the company to make it grow. The burden for companies would go way down, grow our economy, and raise tax revenue, helping to offset the cost to run government paid for health care.

Now, likely taxes would still have to be raised to cover the program, but with the burden of health care taken away from buisness, it shouldn't have to be raised as much. I think sometimes this gets overlooked when discussing the topic of UHC.

Does the cost of UHC concern me? Of course! I too want to know how it will affect my taxes. But having a DH with a major life long medical condition, I have to say the cost would have to be pretty dang high for me to be against it. I'd pay a lot to never have to worry about what will happen if we lose our employer paid for health insurance and we can't get or can't afford private coverage for DH.

Edited to add: It's funny you should mention Congresses health plan, because many of the UHC proposals heavily borrow ideas from their plan, if not copy it out-right.
Another thing (and this might have already been mentioned), my company's primary excuse for moving many operations to South America is the high cost of employing Americans particularly when it comes to paying for healthcare. If the burden of paying for healthcare is taken away from businesses will they be as prone to close American offices?

Oh for the love of God we have highways here. Good highways. Seriously...where do people get this stuff?????

It also gets warm here in summer. We don't ski in July. We don't live in igloos either. For real.
Is the insurance on igloos expensive? ;)

Not really because it is SO cold here 24/7 that they never melt! So what can possibly happen?!?!?!?!:confused3

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
:rotfl2:

People do get some weird ideas about other places. I've had countless people ask me about my horse and when they find out about my Dutch background, some people ask if wooden shoes are uncomfortable. :)

We have to buy insurance for visits to the US. 16 days coverage is costing me $70. Travel to the US has higher insurance premiums than any other area of the world because of the extortionate cost of healthcare in the US.

I guess that isn't too bad??

We have an add-on to our Homeowners Insurance. Costs us $82 per year for a family of 4 (2 daughters in University) and that covers us for unlimited trips anywhere in the World..up to 30 days each trip...$2 million per person cap-per trip. There is a $200 deductible.:confused3

I have never had to use it--thankfully. We bought it after an 'incident' on a Disney bus during NYE (2000) and 17 hrs at Celebration Hosp cost us more than $17,000. We were astounded--like drop to the floor astounded! Anyways, fool me once shame on you---fool me twice--shame on ME!:thumbsup2

Eventually, I will have health insurance. When I get a job after college, I will get health insurance. However, right now, I choose to be happy and young and not stress over imminent death like everyone here seems to think I should.

Health insurance is not an affordable option to me. However, being happy is. I love to travel- it makes me happy. So travel I do.

You would need to speak to my daughter who was 14 last year when she was diagnosed with cancer, she would tell you what is REALLY important....

It would probably be cheaper if I were buying an annual pass or a family pass. However I'm travelling alone and don't intend to making a return trip. Even if I were to make 4-5 trips throughout the year to elsewhere in the world, it works out cheaper for me to buy separate insurance for each trip rather than a annual policy including trips to the US, because the cost of health care in the US is so high that to include it on any trip insurance pushes the premium up massively.

No way in HECK I'd travel to the US without it, though. I figure they'd sell my clothing and a kidney before treating me for a broken toe without insurance!

No disrespect, but I know the realities of cancer. I had a major, though outpatient, operation to help prevent me getting cancer like my grandmother and my mother (x2)

i was 17, covered under a wonderful insurance plan and didn't pay a dime of the $10k + bill.

i am quite aware of what is "REALLY" important and do NOT need to talk to your daughter to understand it.

what is important to you, is not important to me. I would rather live my life the way i choose than fear bad health and be unhappy. i dont doubt i will probably get cancer. can i survive right now? yes. so i am, my own way.

i will graduate college in less than two years. my husband will more than likely rejoin the military and poof! coverage. are we going to pay more for health insurance we're not sure we need than we do for tuition? nope!

EVERYONE has a choice to better themselves or to get out of poverty or to buy health insurance. Your lot in life IS your choice. In the US there is ALWAYS something you can do about it. That doesn't mean it is easy but there IS ALWAYS a choice to change where you are in life. ALWAYS.

As for house values, they vary by area. A $700,000 house in San Diego would be a rundown shack without plumbing. It is all relative dear.

As for affording insurance, we can afford insurance because we worked hard in school, got college degrees--which we paid for by ourselves for EVERY dime, made good career choices and were careful with money. DH's first job paid $16,000/year but you know what, he was offered jobs that paid twice that with minimal benefits. Why did he take that job--because we had excellent health care, an incredible pension plan and a whole host of other benefits that made the total package worth a whole lot more then the other companies could come up with.

If you can't find a job, move--there is a choice. If the only job is a paper route, take the paper route to afford your insurance premiums--there is a choice.

I feel bad for your dad but again, what choices did he make to prepare himself for retirement? Again, his CHOICES put him where he is at now.

I have plenty of experience with people unlike me because we WERE there at one time in our life and our CHOICES got us where we are today. DH's Dad worked 3 jobs, 16 hours/day, 6 days/week so his kids could EAT. Do you think he didn't stress to his kids to work hard in school and do better then him. Even with his low income they have a nice size retirement pension, good health care coverage, their house is paid for, their cars are paid for--why, they never went to Disney for one.

You live in a mighty black and white world.

It's not always a CHOICE. WHAT A FALLACY!

There are sick people who can't work. There are mentally ill people who can't work. There'are mentally impaired people who can't better themselves.

You can't just "move" in this economy. Just ask all the Michiganders stuck in Michigan...they can't sell their homes or even RENT them.

There are homes in my neighborhoodl that have been on the market for 3 years.

Okay, I'm the daughter, and I just have to get this out. I mean no disrespect, but did you go thru chemo? Unless you have, you don't know the realities of having cancer. Going thru chemo for a year for a malignant tumor is not like having a malignant tumor removed. JMO, and again, I mean no disrespect.
It's fine that you don't have insurance, who am I to tell you you must have it if there's no law mandating it. But make sure your prepared for the unexpected. Last year, I certainly didn't think by the age of 15 I'd have battled cancer, but you need to be prepared. Saying it probably won't happen now doesn't mean it won't.

you just proved my point perfectly. That wouldn't happen to her here because of our healthcare plan.

I'm done now.

Oh and no, I don't pay alot for my igloo but paying for the heaters to keep my lawn green in July just about kills me. ;)

You have lawn?? Much too cold where I am...just ice..that's all.:rolleyes1

How did she prove your point? She never, ever said that anyone should go without health care. In fact, she said that people should make sure that they have insurance so that they don't lose everything. At least a catastrophic policy at the minimum.

Having health insurance is huge for me. I will do anything to make sure that my family is insured. I would find a job just for the medical insurance if necessary. It is my responsibility to take care of my family and I would make whatever choice I needed to do so.

No disrespect, but I know the realities of cancer.

No disrespect but no you don't , if you did your priorities would be different. We do not live in fear or are unhappy for bad health , but if something happened we wanted to be covered.
Like someone said recently , if you don't have your health you have nothing!

you're kidding me, right? you honestly think you know more about my life than me?? i'm sorry, but thats ridiculous. as i said i have cancer insurance but i do not pay for it-- my parents do.

cancer has affected my life just as much as it has yours. just because i choose not to live in fear does not mean i dont respect cancer. i just choose not to live my life waiting on it "just in case"

God Bless You.....you seem like a very strong young woman with a good head on her shoulders. I'm sorry you have had to go through so much & wish you only happiness & health.

i didnt say i knew the realities of having cancer.
i said i knew the reality of cancer. most of my childhood centered around cancer- i know exactly what the financial situation is like, etc. i was there. twice.

so no disrespect but if you're going to disagree at least make it about what i actually said.

I'm a little behind on this thread so forgive me if this has been mentioned already.

I've been reading the responses from our friends in CA and the UK that have NHC and they mention paying for scripts and other things. Why doesn't NHC pay for it all? And IIRC, your dental isn't included.
