Seems crazy to pay $160 for a ticket to the parks and the. $150 for the express pass. Going with one daughter and solely for HP, is it worth it? She’s unsure if she wants to ride the fast HP ride anyway.

Thought Disney gouged is; Universal seems way worse!

It really depends on when you are going, but you CAN buy it there if you find you need it. If HP is your only goal and you don't mind waiting in line, you'll be able to get everything done in a day without the EP. You need to do the full queue of both of the big rides at least once just to see them, even if you don't ride. Depending on how old your DD is, you can also take advantage of the single rider lines after you do the full queue once. The money may be better spent buying your DD a wand so that she can run around Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade doing magic.

FYI - while the EP is expensive on its own, a lot of people stay at certain on site hotels and get it included in their room price. On a busy day, it is worth its weight in gold.

When are you going? Do you have park-to-park tickets? How old is your daughter (i.e. can you do single rider if necessary)? Where are you staying?

Staying at Beach Club in Disney and coming over for just 1 day (rest of my family is staying at Disney). My daughter is 11-don’t think we can do single rider. Was debating about getting a room for the EP, but just a lot more logistics than showing up to the park and leaving at the end of the night. Going Aug 19th.

Really appreciate the advice. Thanks!

I guess if the advice is to go through the full HP line once anyway, that might answer my question. I think she’ll enjoy walking around and checking stuff out as much or more as the rides. The exception being the train, I’m sure we’ll ride that both ways. Wouldn’t want to wait 2hrs tocdo so....

If she wants to ride the train, make sure you get a 2 park ticket. Cannot ride without one. Also, one or both of the parks has early entry into Potter lands for resort guests. I'd check for the weekend you are there, which park or if both parks have early entry. If only one park, I'd go to the other HP area. If you are driving, count some time to park in the massive garages, and then there are walk ways, and security to get into City Walk, then walking to the first park you want to enter. And, as true for most, get there at least 45 minutes early. They sometimes open the parks, and hold you just before the rides, so you can get something to eat, and use rest rooms, while being at the front of lines.

I hope you both have a great time. There's so much detail to see in both HP areas. And, yes, even if you do ride the ride in the castle, take the castle tour to look around without holding up a line. Lots of neat stuff to see in there. Check out the women's bathroom in Hogsmeade, and listen. A student spirit is in there. And even if you don't want to eat in the HP area, still look inside the restaurants, they are themed too.

Finally, remember, the express pass is date and park(s) specific, with no refunds. While price may change, I'd go and then see if you need it, as there are many places over both parks to purchase for the day, if you do need it.

It may be a somewhat crowded Sunday. The local kids will have been back to school, and they also may visit the parks on the week-ends. And check the park hours, as usually Islands is open later than the Studios. And the only nightly Potter show is on the castle, so make sure you catch it before you call it a night. I love the HP areas at night.

A 1 day ticket for MK on Aug 19th is $119, hopper is $174. A 1 day ticket for US or IOA is $115, 2 parks is $170. So they are quite comparable in price. Both get less expensive if you get multiday passes. I wouldn't get EP just for the train.

Oh, and any one day ticket to a park is expensive. Even Universal discounts multi day tickets. Price a one day ticket to just the Magic Kingdom, like just posted above. I'd don't think Universal is that much different that Disney in pricing of its park tickets.

Oh, and very nice of you to let your HP loving DD enjoy the Universal Parks HP areas. And check online, there's many YouTube ride POVs, so your DD can see what the rides are like. I'd say the one in the castle is more intense for motion sickness.

I wouldn’t use express pass, the lines are part of the experience, and if the main interest is HP don’t waste your money. Single rider might work at forbidden journey, the sitting arrangement of the ride don’t allow holding each other’s is a very individual experience, but again don’t miss the line at it. If you rope Drop you will have plenty of time to do both lands and probably ride some of the great rides Universal have to offer, use single rider for rides like Tranformers or Spiderman, the qeue isn’t worth the wait and the probability of ride on the same car ( not next to each other) are high.

The touring plans crowd calendar has both parks at 7 out of 10 that day. So it would probably be manageable, but you might need to do some strategic planning to avoid the longer wait times. The good news with the HP lines is that they are meticulously themed and mostly air-conditioned so it isn't as bad as it could be.

Whatever park you start at, do that ride first (Gringotts or Forbidden Journey), take the train to the other side, do that ride and THEN start to explore the lands/getting your wands, butterbeer, etc. to take advantage of the rope drop. If your daughter doesn't want to do the castle ride, you can ask to do a "castle tour" which takes you through most of the line experience without having to actually ride.

Our first trip to Universal was one day, HP centric trip in September w/o the Express Pass and we didn't get much done other than HP, but I didn't miss it. HP is about so much more than the rides.

Also, since it’s just the 2 of you, you might consider using Single Rider lines. That’s what my 13 yo and I did. You wouldn’t sit next to each other though, so you may not want to do that until she’s older.

Not sure why you would go just for Potter. There’s a ton more to do.

She’s unsure if she wants to ride the fast HP ride anyway.

Which one is that? Gringotts and forbidden journey seem the same “fast” to me so I’m not sure which one is the fast one.

Sure you can. At Universal you can ride alone (and therefore do SR) as long as you’re at least 48” AND the height for the ride.

Was debating about getting a room for the EP, but just a lot more logistics than showing up to the park and leaving at the end of the night.

What logistics? Instead of being dropped off or parking at the citywalk lot you are dropped off or park at the hotel lot.

Walk into the lobby, check in, get your room keys. Walk outside and walk to the parks or take a water taxi. And that walk is instead of the LONG slog through the parks garage and all the way through citywalk.

At the end of the night go get your car or be picked up wherever works. Easy. Get there early enough and you get early entrance too.

Or go wild and actually stay there. Have a mini vacay inside of your bigger vacation.

Go really wild and buy two day tickets for the parks. That second day of EP and early entrance would be included in that one night stay.

We did it Thanksgiving week 2 years ago with no problem. We got there when they opened went right to forbidden journey, then rode the dragon coaster and hopped on the train all with no wait. We went to gringotss and waited about 45 minutes. Then we walked around the shops, my son got a wand to do spells. When we rode the train back to tot her side we maybe waited 30 minutes.

Sounds great. Just don’t want to double up the $$$$ on this trip. Yet my daughter is so into HP, but know it won’t last long. We’ll do full universal some day, for now just looking to make it a quick trip over.

That is for the tickets but adding EP is where they get you. If you add the two park EP, you are paying at least $270 per person. UO really screws locals.

I'm not local, but I do have a 3 park AP, which is a really good deal for me (especially compared to the price of a Disney AP). If I was local I would stick to less crowded times I guess.

We have had Annual Passes to universal a few times and have been at peak / busy times. Our main focus is always the Harry Potter sections. I would not buy the Express Pass for just one day. the Hogsmead section only has Forbidden Journey and Flight of the Hippogryf rides to use the Express Pass [EP[/ then over in Diagon Ally they only have one ride, Gringotts. I would arrive 45 minutes before the park opens and get in line. Id plan to spend all day in the parks. Download the Universal wait times app in advance and start your day with the ride that has the shortest wait time. Id minimize my park hopping to save time. Do all you can in each section before moving to the other park. Also, remember if the park closes at 8 pm, you can get in line for the ride at 7:50 pm so that is often what we do for Gringotts or Forbidden Journey. Also, look over the park maps in advance so you have an idea of where things are located. Id go to the Olivanders in Diagon Ally [to see the "wand show"] b/c it is larger and the lines move faster. We never have EP and just focus on HP and do fine. For only one day it will be busy but you can do it.... :) Just paln a little in advnace (stydying hte maps and getting the wait times app and arrive early!)

Yet my daughter is so into HP, but know it won’t last long.

I'm 48 and am more into HP than I was when I first came across it. My son is 14 and is still totally into it and we first visited Wizarding World when he was 6. FWIW.

There's an AP that includes limited express pass after 4. That's what locals would get.
