I used to

at this topic, but now not so much.
Michio Kaku (you may not know the name, but you've probably seen him on PBS/Nova shows on TV) who is a theoretical physicist and professor/chairman of the theoretical physics dept at the City University of New York, as well as a bestselling scientific writer), and Neil DeGrasse
Tyson (astrophysicist and director of the Rose Center Hayden Planetarium in NYC, BOTH have come out recently to urge the governments of the world to look into astronomical findings that are supposed to be possibly "hazardous" to earth sometime in late 2012. These guys aren't nutjobs, but respected scientists. Whenever I heard about the 2012 end of the world talk, I always said "as soon as Kaku believes it, then I'll believe it". Well, Kaku believes something is going to happen.
One other thing, when I was in Mexico, I spoke to a Mayan professor of Theology about this. He told me that if you do the math, whatever that means, according to the Mayan calendar which has predicted other celestial events, yes something is going to happen in December of 2012. However, being a Roman Catholic, he said he sticks to his faith that "no one knows the time or the hour" of the end.
My personal opinion, based on science, it looks like there is going to be an event, and I further believe the government is working with scientists to see how "things" progress. Not that they can do anything about it.
One more thing...Planet X...the Mayans predicted that a celestial body they called Planet X (Planet translated from their word for rock)will come close to earth in 2012. The X denotes a crossing path, not a letter. And Michio Kaku's data says there is an unidentified "body" so far only detected by gravitational mathematics, that does indeed exist which appears to be on a path towards the sun. SO, supposedly, the sun is going to be affected which in turn will severly affect earth.
We shall see.
