Thanks for the input everyone regarding taking our son out of school. I wasn't too worried about 5 days, but 7 seems like a lot (I'm thinking of how the teacher will take it). And I'm not worried about him handling it. He's pretty bright and can pick up just fine. Since those 7 days are the last days before the 4 week Christmas break, they spend several days of excitement, parties and celebration....they really don't introduce any new concepts since the kids are going to be gone for 4 weeks. So I'm thinking if there's a time to miss that's probably the best. :confused3

So, for those of you that have pulled your kids out, what exactly did you say to the teacher...I'm taking him out 7 days early because we're going on a Disney cruise? (Can ya tell I'm a novice at this?!?!) I'm thinking his teacher will be looking at me like, "you know he has 4 weeks off of school, why don't you just go then?" And I agree, that's true, but at the same time DH cannot get time off during those 4 weeks (aside for Christmas and New Year's Day), it's a super busy time for him at work and it's not wise to ask for vacation if you want to see your career progress, if you know what I mean. I guess I just say, that's the only time he can get off and family time together is important. Plus, going to see the ruins is educational, right?!?!

UGH!!!

"I enjoy sitting out on the wonderful deck 4 padded lounge chairs. But in the cooler months the evenings can get chilly. If you like to relax and listen to the sound of the waves even in the cooler temperatures, then bring a blanket down and snuggle up like I did. Several people who passed me commented on how cozy I looked and why had they not thought of that. I had brought a favorite travel-sized, down comforter with me-it rolled up quite small and was very light. It proved a much better alternative to the scratchy blankets provided in the staterooms. This was also the way I fought off seasickness on our last evening. My mother headed off to the stateroom and became more ill, while I went down to deck 4 with my blanket and felt much better in the fresh air."

submitted about a year and a half ago for the second edition, didn't make it in that time. So if you have submitted, keep up the hope!

My tip in the first edition was about the mickey bars hidden from us adults on the kids menu. That even if you didn't have kids sailing with you, you could still find a favorite theme park treat. I am lactose intolerant and had to have my *** server sneak me a mickey bar, PJ, head server, hunted me down as I was leaving and shook his finger at me, lol. Mickey bars don't count as milk, lol.

Lisa W. I would have no problem pulling my kids out of school. Oh...wait, I don't have any. :teeth:

These muscle relaxers are making me loopy. And the blood pressure medicine is making me go pee like a race horse.

According to the school board handbook it is legal to take the kids out for educational travel...which this is. Last year we were fine...7 days excused by the principal. This year since DS was in 1st grade I made sure that he got all of his class & homework for the time we would miss a couple weeks before & he finished it all before we left. He also took the spelling tests that he would miss ahead of time. We did a travel journal & I submitted a letter outlining everything that we would do one month prior to us leaving. The 7 days the kids were out are unexcused & we got a letter that was ccd to social services. Whatever! :rolleyes2 The kids are alloted 15 days to miss before their promotional status is questioned. If they ever tried to keep DS back...heads would roll all the way to the school board if necessary. :rolleyes1 OK, calming down now. ;)

We will either be out 7 or 8 days for this trip. Ideally, it will be 8 so that we can spend Thursday at MK & then enjoy the resort & DTD on Friday. That will depend on how many days the kids have missed for illness before the cruise. I want to leave enough days for the 2nd half of the year so that it doesn't become an issue.

Well I'm pushing the envelope big time!!! We'll have our kids out for 6 days for the cruise (leaving Friday) AND THEN - I'm a bad enough mom to want to stay in Floriday and visit parents the week after the cruise...which would mean the kids might miss another 3-4 days depending on the school calendar. Mind you, these 3-4 days are Christmas week...when our school is practicing the school Christmas play and having Christmas parties. So - bring it on....am I a bad mom?!?! I definitely would not do this during the regular year, but not much seems to get done around the holidays in our school.

Now - in another 3-4 years, we are planning a trip to the Great Wall of China! My son wants so bad to walk the Wall. It is his dream (yes he is 8!) But that's gonna be a 2 week trip for sure!

So - I'll be known as the mom who values time with her family vs. the rigors of school. I definitely respect the work and my kids will have theirs done!! But...

Angie/Jordon Thanks. I get a free book and they put my name in the book aswell. Yeah!

Okay, well I'm not going to worry about pulling him out for 7 days and I'll be willing to do whatever they want him to do to make it up, so to speak. I really don't see a lot of learning occuring in holiday school parties and holiday shows, so I'd like to see them argue the point with me. I did find out we have 12 days before their promotion is questioned.

Thanks again everyone!!!

Like I said earlier this is how we treated our son and I don't think it hurt him at all either in school or family life. Even if I have to say so myself; he is a pretty well rounded and accomplished man now. :thumbsup2

Don't go sweating it, honestly. :) It was frustrating for us to have to drive all day Monday after our cruise last year to have the kids go to 1 1/2 days of school before Christmas break.

WOW! It is echoing around here tonight. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Our DS and DGS, Aaron, are coming up from AZ for a wedding in 2 weeks. Dennis and I had to go pay for their tuxes today. They will be Best Man and Ringbearer. Dennis is going to do the photography for the wedding also. This is DS's best friend from high school. Still is even with the distance between them. We are, of course, very excited to get to see them. :grouphug: They get here on Wed the 15th and stay thru Monday the 20th. :woohoo:

It is very quiet tonight. Howdy everyone. :wave2: Hope your weekend is good.

Just chillin' tonight. I have been posting some pictures on other threads. Hope everything is well on the west coast. :surfweb:

:surfweb: :hyper2: Talking to self. Not a good thing! They medicate people where I work for doing that. I better go. Time to pick up DGS from pep band anyway. Later.

Oh Whew! Good to see you Brack. I was getting worried they were gonna take me away. Now I have to run. Drat!

Lots more rain on the way tonight and tomorrow and high winds now as well. They advised that we all have candles ready incase trees knock out some power. Hope not, we are all electric at our house, even the well pump. No electricity = no water = no flushing. :scared1: I do have a large jug of water in the garage that will last awhile.
