As a parent of a child in this situation, you should ask the school to document how they are "handling it". Claim it is for the comfort level of the parents involved to prove that all administrative steps are being taken to ensure the situation is being corrected/maintained immediately.
We had a situation where one of Devon's teachers required a substitute one day. The substitute felt that it was her right to let the class take a break and tell jokes at the end of the class. Her idea of jokes were of the "your momma's so fat..", "your momma's so stupid..." etc variety; she even asked the kids to make up a few! When we heard that, we flipped! A nasty letter was written to the school citing their policy of tolerance and demanding this be corrected and proof that it was handled given back to us. A week or so later, the teacher in fault wrote us a letter apologizing for her actions.
In the end, the school needs to evaluate their policy to the letter, enforce it, reassure the parents that they are handling it appropriately as well as communicating this and preventing it in the future. Just because they are a large organization, that does not give them the right to ignore the parents or not explain how it is being handled, they OWE us that much....the parents that pay their salaries.
Sorry, I'm rambling....breathe breathe breathe....
