10th birthday

I have a feeling the band will be done by the summer with one of the members leaving I feel bad for all the parents that got tickets a year ago. I think I am going to tell her no

Throwing out a different perspective of a child who STILL remembers this 30 years later.......

I was 11 years old and absolutely loved Duran Duran. They were playing in a city 1 1/2 hours away. My mom said I was too young and they will be back. Well, Roger Taylor left the band. They didn't come back as a whole group. I was able to see Duran Duran minus Andy Taylor 2 years ago. At a much more significant cost than 1983 dollars lol.

Actually the same thing happened with Van Halen except they were in our city. I probably never will get to see Van Halen with David Lee Roth.

Easy answer for me...."No". Ten-year olds don't need to be going to a rock concert. Nope. There is plenty of time for that in the future.

If she were my DD....she'd be having a sleepover with these two friends. Movies, ice cream...the whole nine yards.

VH was INSANE with DLR. You missed a really good show, I'm sorry to say. :(

Just say no. It's way more than you said you planned on spending AND there's the out-of-state issue AND your worries about them all changing their minds. Be the parent and say, "No, honey, that's not going to work and it's just too much. Let's think of something else to do."
Totally how I'd handle it as well. I confess though, to being one of those parents that immediately wants to provide my kid with everything his heart desires and can get rolling fast on a million ways to make a wild idea work...until I remember that I don't have everything my heart desires, nor should I. :rotfl2: Then I come back to my senses. As a few other PP's have said, there's plenty of time for this sort of thing in her future.

I would hardly qualify one direction as a rock concert.
Plus this boy band's target audience are tweens and teenagers.,

That being said I wouldnt take friends. If she wanted to go I would take her.
Taking friends that young and something so far in the future is tricky.
What if your daughter and these friends have a spat and arent even friends anymore by the time the concert rolls around?

that was my other concern. and 1d is not a rock band they are like the backstreet boys and new kids on the block. my parents took me to see bsb when I was 14

Be old fashion and give her a great gift. Say no. She will learn to know that you can't get everything. She'll survive the disappointment.

my daughter's 10th birthday is in july and for her birthday this year she would like too take two friends and see one direction in aug in new jersey the tickets are $115.00 each and then I would have to pay for a hotel for the night since we live in new York this is way more then I spend on a birthday party. I did not give her an answer yet since I would be taking kids out of state overnight I am going to check with the parents first before I buy tickets . my other issue with doing this is what happens if they decide they don't like them anymore by aug I see this happening with a lot of kids her age. my other question is do you think they are too young for a concert I did not go to my first concert till I was 14 and saw the backstreet boys. please help

If I were inclined to take her to this concert, I'd take her myself, without the friends.
If I were inclined to take her to a concert with A friend (just one!) I'd find something closer to home and more affordable that we could do without traveling out of state and staying overnight.

I would also likely give her a budget to work with that I considered reasonable (probably something much closer to the price of having a home party + the price of a gift that would give her, most likely some budget in the $150 range) and ask HER to plan what she wants to do based on that budget. Something less expensive including more friends or something more expensive with just the family or one friend, whatever works within the budget that she chooses in lieu of a party and a gift from me.

I'd hate to set the precedent of a big expensive birthday outing at 10, because if that happens then she might expect that I woudl continue to something equivalent every year.

I do think those replies that mention the possiblity of One Direction not being together and the summer concerts cancelled might be onto something.

the other band she likes is 5sos and I don't know if they are touring anywhere in new York

Wait!! You mean you don't get a refund if a band breaks up?

If that's what you do at age 10, what happens at 11? 12? 16?

Pace yourself.

We have girls overnight a lot. Definitely every year on my daughter's birthday. Up through age 11 we occasionally had one get homesick and need to go home in the middle of the night. No way would I take a chance on being out of town with them unless their parents were along as well.

I saw VH with DLR with my friends in high school - great show! I'd say no to this, because of the cost, I'd say yes to my kids, because it's 10 minutes away, but they have no interest. I don't think its a typical rock concert - does anyone over the age of 15like them?

The are playing at SPAC this summer, lawn seats are usually around $20 but not sure if they are more for certain bands.

spac is sold out I just looked I would do lawn seats but the weather is a concern. I saw the backstreet boys at spac in 2005 and the sound was not great. I wish they where playing in Albany ny as it's only an hour from my house and I could take her two friends
