my daughter's 10th birthday is in july and for her birthday this year she would like too take two friends and see one direction in aug in new jersey the tickets are $115.00 each and then I would have to pay for a hotel for the night since we live in new York this is way more then I spend on a birthday party. I did not give her an answer yet since I would be taking kids out of state overnight I am going to check with the parents first before I buy tickets . my other issue with doing this is what happens if they decide they don't like them anymore by aug I see this happening with a lot of kids her age. my other question is do you think they are too young for a concert I did not go to my first concert till I was 14 and saw the backstreet boys. please help

I think it's a bit much for 10 year old. I know I wouldn't spend that much on my kids party.
I also think at 10 kids still might get homesick being away from their parnets overnight.

I think even if they don't like the same kids by the concert date, a new friend would pop up to go.

Just say no. It's way more than you said you planned on spending AND there's the out-of-state issue AND your worries about them all changing their minds. Be the parent and say, "No, honey, that's not going to work and it's just too much. Let's think of something else to do."

I love experience gifts, but probably wouldn't feel comfortable doing an overnight at the hotel unless I knew the parents very well.

Could you compromise and just have it as a special mother/daughter night and allow her to go to a movie with a couple of friends instead?

I don't think it's too early for a supervised concert. My kids have been going to all sorts of concerts since they were little.

guys thanks for the help I don't know why they put tickets for these shows on sale so early . if the concert was in new York I would do it but I don't know if I am ok with taking kids out of state. I am going to talk with my husband and see if he is ok with just me taking her to the show

I made that mistake the first year.. I didn't buy a year out thinking it was just a fad.. MY BAD..

IF it only about the band, I would bite the bullet and go for it!!!! Even by chance if they don't like them, you can sell them..

I love the idea...but I would only do it if it took place in my city.

No I don't think 10 is too young for a concert, and I wouldn't have an issue taking a friend over night out of state as long as I knew the friends and the parents. You have some time to get to know them if you don't.
I don't think you'll have anything to worry about as far as them not liking them anymore. My ds's friends are now 11 going on to 12 and still love them.
I say go for it, sure it may be more money than you usually spend but it will be a memory she will have forever!

Yeah, I don't think I'd be comfortable with this either, for all the reasons you listed. Your daughter likely has absolutely no idea of what this would cost. When you're talking about buying tickets for 3 girls, plus yourself ($460), and the costs of transportation (~$100), food (~$250), and lodging for the night (~$150), you are going to be on the high side of $900. That seems excessive to me for a 10 year olds birthday celebration. If your DD really, really wants to see New Direction, and you can afford it, how about you just make it a Mommy-Daughter trip? You would reduce your cost by about $360. Still too rich for my blood but you're the only one who knows your drop-dead budget.

Maybe a better option would be to buy her a ND poster and a sticker book, invite several BFFs (those she is still friends with in July) to a sleep-over at your house, buy about $60 worth of pizza, and show a video of a ND concert.

here is my other issue the seats are not great they are in the top of the arena if I am paying $115.00 a ticket I want to be able to see the band and not have to look at the TV's they have. have any of you taken your kids too see them at these stadium shows

Are you going to the one at Metlife? Stubhub has upper level for $65 and up. My dd wanted to get them for her BFF for her b-day and was trying to find the cheapest option since she is paying for them herself (especially because my dd does not like them at all LOL) and she doesnt care about being so far away.

My dd and her friend are 17, so its not the same situation as you, I just wanted to let you know you might be able to find tickets cheaper :)

yes we were looking at metlife . I am surprised tickets are cheaper on stubhub

My dd will also be turning 10 this year - in May. Two of my good friends with dd's the same age (one will be 10 in April and the other in Sept.) bought their dd's One Direction tix for their Minneapolis concert in July (I think it's July?) which is a 5 hour drive from us so they're staying in a hotel. The girls don't know about it. My one friend's daughter, who was a HUGE One Direction fan (posters on the wall, etc.) has now said she HATES them and makes her mom change the radio station when they come on. So yes, it is possible for them to change their mind. I think it's way more than I'd want to spend for 10 year old girls!

One of the members just quit the band today, so that may preclude a lot of little girls from wanting to go. Personally, I would never spend that kind of money for a 10 year olds birthday.

Gosh, that is a lot of money. And its really far away. And the seats wouldn't even be good. I would explain to her that its just too much to spend and too far away. Maybe discuss some other options with her. The mother/daughter concert trip would be one if she is absolutely set on One Direction. Another option would be to find a concert close to home that she and her friends would enjoy. One where the tickets are less expensive! Who else does she like to listen to? Do you have a local arena or state fair nearby that hold concerts?

Just out of curiosity I looked up Imagine Dragons. They are playing at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee...tickets range from 26.50-56.50 and its only 75 min away from us. If you could find something like that near you, it could be totally doable.
