Best and most recognizable are two different questions. Most recognizable - U. of Phoenix to be sure.

best - I am partial to Capella University in Minnesota. I am 2 courses away from my BS in IT Project Management (yeaaa!). I have had a very good experience.

My employer is a Fortune 100 company and they are paying 100% of my tuition, so I can say they think it is just as valuable as a bricks and mortar school.

If you have any questions, just send me a pm.

Good luck!

A degree from the University of Phoenix is worthless in many fields, but it would depend on what she wants to study.

As a general rule, online programs that are attached to Universities with regular Bricks and Mortar programs are viewed more favorably by potential employers. Many State Universities now offer online programs in addition to their traditional classes taught by the same Professors.

If she decides to go the route of an online degree, she needs to make sure the University is accredited.

yes, U of P is pretty much laughed off in some fields of study.

I would go a traditional college route and take an online course. My DH had never really went to college. Due to his work schedule, he was able to take two online college courses offered by a local college. It works out well, and he gets the flexibility he needs.

I have taken tons of online courses from my local college as well. I think I stopped counting at 12 courses. Its been wonderful for me conveinence wise, but you do have to work hard!

In some ways online courses are even more challenging than regular classes.

My husband is getting a Bachelor's degree in Business Management through Empire State College. (www.esc.edu and click on Distanace Learning)

He has a two year degree from the community college, and he was able to transfer all credits to the bachelor's. His work experience also counted for some of the credits.

He then formed a degree program focusing on business management. He'll finish by September.

My husband works for Mayo Clinic and is getting his MBA. They pay 100% tuition and they approve Univ. of Phoenix. Since our town does not have a 4 year university employees have to travel 1.5 hours ONE WAY to get to classes. With online classes they lose much less of the employees work time. In all honesty though, the MBA here is just a piece of paper. You really move up because of the work you've done well.

I am interested in getting a masters in special ed. I asked my supervisor last week about University of Phoenix and was told that the education field does not recognize a degree from them.

Go to a regular college and use their on-line college--most of them have them. A good one, for anyone, is the University of Maryland University College. The Univ. of MD has extensive experience in "distance" learning because they have had one of the military contracts for probably 20 or 30 years and have campuses on most military installations. I have taken a few courses with them and they work VERY well.

The Department of Education has a searchable data base that lets you check the accreditation of post-secondary institutions. You enter the name of the college or university, and specify national and/or regional accrediting agencies, geographic location, etc. You'd need to make sure that the profession you're interested in recognizes the accrediting agency as being legitimate.

Here's the link: http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/ Click the "Institutional accreditation system" link at the bottom of the page.

There's also a discussion of diploma mills and accreditation at http://www.ed.gov/students/prep/college/diplomamills/index.html

100% agree.

Do a search on most of the online universities, and you'll come up with sites like this one: U of Phoenix S**ks

Of course, students everywhere have complaints about their colleges. Most colleges, however, haven't been sued for not paying their employees overtime, or been fined by the govenment for their recruiting practices.

I am going for my associates through them right now. I know they are a part of the State University of New York schools. I also just looked them up on the website that someone earlier had posted and they were listed being accredited by Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Higher Education

I have to agree with the others—all the companies I’m aware of in my area view a degree from University of Phoenix as essentially worthless. I would advise looking into distance learning programs from bricks and mortar colleges. My husband currently attends a regular university, but we’re looking into UMUC, as was mentioned previously by Christine.

When DH worked for Intel they did not view UoP as worthless, he earned his degree from there. His current employer also did not view it as such, and without that degree he never would have had the opportunity to do his current position. Someone mentioned checking the accrediting body - a great suggestion.

ETA: Each person's mileage may vary, you get out of college what you put into it. He took it seriously and worked hard.

I'm not sure where you live, but you might want to check out Strayer University (www.strayer.edu). This is both a brick & mortar school and an online university. The curriculum is limited, but they are very good. I graduated with a BS in Accounting in 2003 and have been very pleased. Employers in my area recognize them and they are a fully accredited university. I went to most of my classes on campus, but did take some online as well, which was nice.

I agree. I have my degree from them and believe I received a wonderful education. My employer paid 100% of the tuition for my BS and is willing to do the same for my MBA through them.

I have an AA from Univ of Maryland University College and my transcript actually says Univ of Maryland College Park on it. I did 1 online class, and they have a HUGE set up and are well thought in terms of a quality education. They are the contractors to the government for overseas military and have great programs. Check them out!
