LOVE all the updates Karen!! Your DC trip sounds wonderful!! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to go out there and see all the sites! Hey Karen!
Glad you are back and had a great time!
Waiting to read more! :)

Hi Heather!
I am glad to be home, it was a fun weekend but completely exhausting!!! This was actually the first time I've been away from Dan and the kids...like ever!!! I was gone for one overnight over 4 years ago when I was pregnant with Mater, McQueen was 2, and I went on a shopping trip with a friend of mine and we stayed overnight. Other than that, I've never been away...sad I know! :rotfl: So I did miss everyone a lot and it was good to come home and see them all.

Thanks Beth! It was a super fun trip, even with all of the crowds, lines, and people. You know its one of those things I've always wanted to do and figured someday I would go, and I'm so glad we just decided to do it. It was very nice spending time with my mom and sister, and we got to hear a lot of stories from my mom about when she was young - places she went, things she did. So that was really nice, and an important part of the trip.

I'll try to post Day 2 today. I spent all night last night going through my pictures and I'm only about half way done!

Karen

I'm loving your mini DC trip report! So cool you got to go. :thumbsup2

Karen:

So glad you had a good time. I hope the weather stayed good for you. It was in the 90's most days when we were there. We got to see the cherry blossoms the first day we were there but they started going away fast.

Boy, you got close to the White House. We never walked that far up to get a picture. It is funny as that morning we were at the memorials. We saved it for our last day and then headed to Mt. Vernon before going home.

We did go up in the Washington Monument. I had been before but DH and DS had not. I got in line the first day we were there at 7:00 a.m. and at 9:30 we were told that all tickets were gone for the day. DH was gracious enough to get up and get in line at 5:30 on that Wednesday and got us tickets. I am glad he did as I knew he and DS would love the views.

Did you end up doing the memorials at night? We drove by but I wish we had taken the tour. I bet the Korean War memorial would be beautiful at night up close. Most nights we were so worn out we got back to the room late.

Well, enough of my ramblings. I can't wait to read more.

Hi Sarah! Welcome back - hope you had an amazing trip! Can't wait to read your TR!

Hi Erika!

We did have good weather, Thursday was 70s and sunny, and the rest of the days were sunny and mid-60s - it was a bit breezy all weekend but not bad - it was fine by me - I didn't pack any shorts!!! So I was kind of happy that it wasn't any warmer!

That is cool that you got to go up the Washington! I heard you had to get tickets early - how nice of your DH to get up so early! That must have been an amazing view! We did do a night tour, it was nice to see them all lit up at night, it didn't go past the White House so we walked back down to that on our last night and got some pictures of it lit up - very pretty.

Glad to hear you had a good trip and that your DH made it through as well - hope he's feeling better!

WASHINGTON DC DAY 2: Transportation Issues and we go out with a Bang!

Day 2, Friday, started out with us getting up and heading over to a little cafe we found to get some breakfast. We had seen this place called the Corner Bakery while walking to dinner the previous night, so we went there for breakfast, it was a cute little place with bakery items and also breakfast sandwiches and paninis - it was very good.

After breakfast we walked the 4 or so blocks to the White House Visitor Center where they have a Tourmobile pickup spot. We had looked at some of the various tours, and this one looked like it would suit us best, so we got there and waited....and waited....and waited. No bus. They were supposed to start at 9:30am and we waited around until 10am and still no bus. At this point we decided to walk over to the National Archives which was only 4-5 blocks away. Along the way we passed the American History Museum and Natural History Musuem, and decided that we wanted to try to get in the American History one. When we got to the Archives, the lines was wrapped around 3 sides of the block! So we decided to backtrack the 2 blocks over to the American History Museum and do that first, try to get to the Archives later. There was a line at the museum, but it moved pretty fast, we got in in about 15 minutes or so.

IMG_7836.jpg

Once inside we pretty much went through all of the exhibits. My favorite by far was the Star Spangled Banner - I just loved it, thought it was really well done. Unfortunately you couldn't take any pictures inside the exhibit, so I don't have any. This is the outside:

IMG_7856.jpg

We had heard that the Pop Culture exhibit was very popular, and by the time we got to the 3rd floor there was quite a long line, but we decided to wait there and check it out. It took about 20 minutes or so to get through line the line, but it was a fun exhibit...the main attraction is:

IMG_7860.jpg

I kind of couldn't believe we waited that long to see a pair of shoes! But it was fun and there were many other things in there that were cool and worth seeing. After we finished the exhibits, we went to the cafe in the lower level and got lunch there, it was after 1pm and we were hungry! We shopped around in the gift shop, picked up a t-shirt and hat, a Cherry Blossom shirt, and a few other little things, then we left the museum.

We decided to give this Tourmobile thing another try, we wanted to get up to the Capitol and it was about 2 mile walk (one way) so we found a tour stop right across the mall and walked over to that. Luckily this time we only waited about 20 minutes and there it was - the Tourmobile! We hopped on and and they took us up to the Capitol, where we hopped off and walked around there for a while.

From there we had a really nice view of the whole mall, and the Capitol itself.

IMG_7876.jpg
IMG_7880-1.jpg

We walked around the back side where a guard told us we could get on a tour, but when we got back there they were no longer taking people into the routunda, they were just going into a visitor center. So we skipped that and headed over to the Botanical Garden which was right there and walked through that, it was very nice. I'm not a big gardner or anything myself, but my mom knows a lot about plants and stuff and it was fun to walk through, saw all sorts of plants from different environments.

At this point it was late afternoon and we knew we wanted to get on a night tour for the monuments, so we had to get over to Union Station to get on a tour. We were able to hop back on the next Tourmobile that came along and it took us to Union Station. YEAH - it worked, we were able to hop off and hop back on and not wait all day for the bus!

IMG_7941.jpg

We got there and got out tour tickets right away, and had some extra time so we went over to the US Postal Museum that was right next door. It was actually a really good little museum! (Both my sister and I collected stamps growing up so we had an interest anyway). When I walked in, right away I knew my kids would have loved it - planes, traines, and vehicles everywhere!

IMG_7925.jpg

After the museum we shopped around a little while then decided to get some dinner. We saw a restaurant on the upper level called America and we decided to go up there. They seated us up on the 3rd level which was really nice - had a great view of the station! A family at a nearby table asked if I would take their picture, so I did and in return she did one of us!

IMG_7938.jpg
IMG_7936-1.jpg

After dinner we went to get in line for the tour. We didn't have to wait long and they boarded us and the tour began. It basically did one big loop along the mall and to the monuments - it was a nice tour and fun to see everything at night, and see some of the nightlife around town! That got done about 9:30pm, and we got in a taxi to head back to the hotel.

It was right about this time when we're all starting to unwind from a busy day, starting to think about getting back to the hotel and relaxing, and thinking about what to do tomorrow and what we have left to see...letting our minds wander a bit. It was right about that time when I think we were all looking forward to a quiet night and a cozy bed. And it was right about the time when our taxi driver started to fumble around with and drop his cell phone. In an attempt to rescue the phone, he apparently didn't see the busy intersection we were approaching and the car that was still sitting at the light. So at about 25 feet before reaching the car in the intersection, all 3 of our minds quickly snapped back into focus and we all simultaneously yelled "STOP"!!! He looked up in time to hit the bakes and slow us down a little bit before crashing into the cars back end...luckily we were probably only going 25 and not 40 when he hit. We were a little shaken, the driver got out and talked to the guy he hit, and I made sure my mom was okay...she was. I was sitting in the middle of the back seat, and so my mom and sister both had seats in front of them to brace themselves on - I flew forward between the seats when we hit, and I somehow bent my right hand in a unnatural direction - my thumb was pretty sore but I didn't want to make a big deal out of it, I just wanted to get to the hotel and out of this cab! The driver picked up his headlight off the ground and proceeded to take us to the hotel that was only 3 blocks away at this point. And yes, he charged us the $11 cab fare. :sad2: I really couldn't believe it. At this point I just paid him and and we got out. What a way to end the night! I was just glad no one was really hurt and we joked about it the next day. :)

So that was it, that was day 2. What will day 3 bring?

UP NEXT: DC Day 3:
-Will we go to the Cherry Blossom Parade (with the other 100,000 people in a 1-mile stretch?)
-Long lines at the Archives again - will we wait it out?
-And the cherry on top - how we ended our last night in DC.

Karen:

OMG, I can't believe he hit the car and still charged you! You are much better than I. I would have been furious. That is so funny as we stayed in MD the last two days of our trip. On the last day, we were making our way into DC and traffic was super slow. Across the street, a guy came out of his house and got in this car that had one flat tire. Tom is laughing the whole time wondering if he knew his tire was flat. Well, he proceeds to start backing up and literally backs into the car behind him moving it about 3 feet and takes off in the car with the flat. People amaze me!

So glad you enjoyed the night tour. I bet everything was beautiful.

Surprisingly, DS loved the botanical gardens. He and DH had both made fun of me all week for wanting to go there. It is very beautiful. I enjoyed the American History museum as well. My favorite was the First Ladie's gowns. They were so pretty.

You did not miss much at the capitol. They take you in the rotunda and show you all the statues for each state. You go into another room to look at statues once again. And that was basicly it. So much different than when I was a child and you got to see the House and Senate Floors.

popcorn::Can't wait to hear about Day 3.

Hi Erika!

I KNOW! I couldn't believe he still charged us either. We were about to get out and just walk the rest of the way back, and we probably should have! Oh well. I think if my mom would have been even a little bit hurt I would have gotten pretty mad - the fact that she as okay made me not get too upset at the time. Oh well, it happens I guess. Driving is crazy out there!

Thanks for the info on the Capitol - glad we didn't miss much, would have been nice to get in but not worth waiting all day for.

I've spent all morning today trying to get through my pictures!! My mom brought me her memory card from her camera to download, so I have anoth 150+ pix on top of my 500+ to edit! It is going well, just taking a while, and I'm deleting a lot of duplicates so the quantity is going way down! I just want to get them all done this week. Hopefully I'll have tim to post our Day 3 update soon!

WASHINGTON DC: DAY 3 - WE GOT IT ALL IN!

This morning we got up and headed back over to the little cafe we ate breakfast at the day before - only to find it closed!! Only open on the weekdays - we were disappointed but found a Starbucks (that's not too hard, they are literally on every other corner and block) and had a little breakfast there.

We had been debating about going to the Cherry Blossom parade - apparently it's like the hugest parade in DC, they get crowds of over 100,00 people, and the parade route is only a mile stretch of road. So, we decided against the parade and decided to head out of that general vicinity and head over to Arlington. When my mom lived here in the 1960's, their base was actually right next to Arlington, and that land has now been incorporated into the cemetary, although the actual base and buildings were torn down years ago. We hopped in a cab and he quickly (and safely) got us over to the cemetery.

As we approached we could see the Women's Memorial right at the entrance, and we went there first. It was really nice to see that and be there, in 1997 when it opened my mom was a part of the charter members group for the memorial, so it was very nice to be there and see it. We could go up to the top of it and got a great view of Memorial Dr and of DC itself - it was very quiet and peaceful there that early in the morning. Inside the memorial are some really nice displays and exhibit, we took our time touring those and were also able to look up my mom's military records in the database they have there, she looked up a few of her old friends as well. It as very meaningful to see her name in the memorial.

IMG_7962.jpg
IMG_7971.jpg

After that, we went on a walk to try to find the grave of one of the colonel's my mom used to work for. Over the years he and his wife became close friends with my mom, she spent holidays with them and kept in touch through the years after she was out of the military. She had gotten his information on where his grave was located, and it was quite close to the entry so we started walking around, and trying to figure out where it was. It took us a little while to figure out their numbering system, but once we did (finally saw the codes on the back of the stones) we quickly walked to the section and found him. I was really glad we found it, it meant a lot to mom.

IMG_8003.jpg

Once we were done, we headed over to the Visitor center and hopped on the Tourmobile - it stopped at the JFK gravesite, Tomb of the Unknown, and Arlington House. It was a nice tour and we go to see everything and watch the Changing of the Guard.

IMG_8106-1.jpg

I found Arlington to be quite stunning...although sad, it has a very beautiful and serene feeling, I could have just stayed there all day and walked around, reading the different monuments and memorials. After we finished the tour, my mom wanted to walk over to the area where her base used to be, so we headed that direction. It was a bit of a hike, but we made it. It is there the Columbairum now stands (for those of you who've been there). We got a nice view of the Pentagon, where she used to walk to work. We only stayed a little while then decided to head back, it was after noon by now and we were all getting hungry and were ready to head back. We hopped the tourmobile and it took us back across to DC, and up to the National mall where we hopped off and grabbed a bit to eat.

After lunch, we decided to give the Archives one more try, not knowing how long the line would be or if we'd even get in. We walked over there and saw the line was only down 1 side of the block, so we quickly got in the and started waiting, it was about 3pm by now. The line moved pretty quick, we only waited about 25 minutes and we were in! Headed up to the Routunda and got in the queue for seeing the main attractions - Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. The line there also went pretty quick, and soon we got to go up and take a look! There were a lot of crowds but we got to see pretty well, you could make out some of what the documents said, although some we so faded you could not see the words. After seeing those, we went through the other exhibits they had, and finished up in the gift shop, of course!

IMG_8127.jpg

We got done there by about 5pm, and they only big thing we had not seen yet was the Jefferson Memorial. So we hopped a cab and he took us over to that, and we walked around there for about an hour. It was nice, again great views of DC.

IMG_8128.jpg
IMG_8133.jpg

We got back to our hotel about 6:30pm, and we were starving! We walked a few blocks looking for a restaurant, but being that late on a Saturday night they were geting busy, so we went back to Stans, the place we went our first night. Got in right away and had a great meal. While we were eating, we decided to walk down to the White House after dinner and see it lit up and just walk around a bit, none of us really wanted to go back to the hotel since it was our last night.

DSC00438-1.jpg

So we finished up dinner and walked to the White House, passing a cute little ice cream shop on the way....by this time in the trip we must have all been thinking alike, because that sure looked good! We saw the White House and did some pictures, then walked through Lafayette park again and headed back to that ice cream shop! They had some outdoor seating so we sat outside and enjoyed our chocolate ice cream cones, talked about the weekend and how much fun it had been. It was the perfect way to end our trip. From there we went back to the hotel, packed up a bit and got to bed.

The next morning we got up, ran across the street to Starbucks for some breakfast, and got all checked out. Got over the airport pretty early, had to wait about 2 hours for the flight, but flight went well and we got back to Milwaukee about 1pm, and drove home. All in all it was a GREAT trip and I'm so glad we did it. My mom commented once during the trip that she never thought she would make it back, so I'm glad that my sister and I were able to do this for her and take her out there. It meant a lot to her and to both of us, to spend that time with her and relive some of those memories with her.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to read about my trip. It was great and I definitely recommend going - it is incredible to see!

Karen:

I am so glad your mom had such a nice time. What a great way to spend time together.

The White House looked beautiful at night.

I can't believe we did not do the women's memorial at Arlington. We did everything else but that. I bet it was interesting.

Hi Erika-

Thanks! We really did have a good time (incase you couldn't tell from all my gushing about it!! :goodvibes)

All of the monuments and stuff we really pretty at night, I was glad we walked back down to see the White House (and we would have never found that delicious ice cream shop without going down there!)

I think the Women's Memorial is kind of overlooked there, people see the building but maybe don't know that there are exhibits inside and stairwells that lead up to the top - you get a great view from up there! There were not a lot of people there at all when we were there, most everyone goes for the other main sights. They had some really nice exhibits, especially on the women pilots, and one of the most touching things I saw there at the end there was a room with these large binders full of women's profiles from the memorial's database (pictures and info on them-military and personal) who were killed in Iraq or Afganistan since 2001...I don't know how many there were but there were several large binders that had to each be 3-4 inches thick. It was very sad to flip through the pages and look at the pictures of the people who are no longer here, just from this war. Makes it hit home. If you ever go back I'd definitely recommend stopping there and just walking through.

Dh would be so jealous of your DC trip. As much as he's sooo excited to see his beloved Red Sox play on Thursday night, his dream trip is DC!!

I can't believe the cab driver still charged you - the nerve!!!!

We're coming up on 4 months tomorrow - I feel like its so close now!!! LOL Well, considering I've been planning for 8 months now - I'm 2/3 of the way!!

Hi Jennie!

oh, your DH would love DC! I've been dreaming of going since I was in high school, and it was better than I ever imagined it would be...it was awesome! Can't wait to go back and take my kids when they're older.

Yes, it is starting to feel like it will be here soon! 4 months is not THAT long! What makes it feel soon for me is that I booked the DC trip 3 months in advance, and that alrealdy came and went - and it didn't take that long! So 4 more months does not seem too far away. Plus this time of year goes fast with summer coming and being busy doing other things - it'll be here in no time!

Now that my other trip is over I have to get back to my Disney planning and especially work on my Autograph Books! I'm so behind - I haven't touched them in months now. I just gotta get caught up on some other stuff, like housework, and get some free time to work on them!

Karen

Great DC updates! Sounds & looks like ya'll had a wonderful time! :) Love the pics too!

I very rarely get away from the kids too (alone) to go anywhere.

I think I want to take a trip up to Archivers--there is a new line out that I think would be great for AK layouts. I asked for 3 ring albums for my birthday and got a few. I am going to work to transition to them too. Not sure what I will end up getting for Disney--I may wait until I get home so I can look at the albums down there. I had not heard that store had close, at least the supplies are sold at other places. :goodvibes: I just took the plunge and bought a Digital Rebel XS. I spoke to a good friend who is a photojournalist. She helped me pick out the right camera based on what I would use it for! I am so excited but I have lots to learn! I posted a few pictures on my PTR of first ones I had taken. :goodvibes: I played around with a few of the settings but want to transition to manual mode. Perhaps this summer I will learn enough to try a bit at Disney.

I love  DC!! I want to go back so bad. The last time (and only time) I have been was senior year of high school. Hopefully soon! Thank you for doing your mini-TR! I really enjoyed reading about your trip. I sure hope you are ok after the car accident. The nerve of him to charge you a cab fare after he had an accident--it would have been much worse if you had not said anything.

Hi Heather!

Thanks, it was a great trip.

I know what you mean about getting away from the kids - this was my fist time away, and the last time I was away it was only for 1 night over 4 years ago. DH goes deer hunting so he's gone for 5 days every fall, and also travels a couple times a year for conferences for work where he's gone a couple of nights, but I think it is much harder for us moms to get away on our own. When I orginally talked to DH about planning this trip - I felt really guilty!!! Like I shouldn't be gone or something - but you know what - they all survived and actually had a really good time while I was gone. DH planned a couple of things and they didn't sit around missing me - which was good! I'm sure it'll be years before I go away for an overnight again!!

Congrats on the new camera!!:thumbsup2 I'm sure you'll love it! I still don't know how to use many of the manual settings, although I have been reading and try to play around when them when time allows. I just got lazy after seeing what good pix it takes on the auto settings, so I never bothered to use manual! Plus it is hard with small kids and their constant moving around - don't always have the time to adjust setting in between! I'm just nervous that I'll have the wrong setting and the pix won't turn out!.

Hope you like the 3-ring albums - I just love them - no more shuffling pages or taking apart the posts when I miss a page and have to go back and add it!
I have to go get more 2 albums for my 2010 family pictures, I usually fill up at least 2 so I'll start with that. ;)

I am really behind on my scrapbooking - I know compared to most people I'm probably pretty well caught up, but I usually print my pix every 2 months then scrap them, so I'm usually not more than 2-3 months behind. Right now I haven't scrapped anything since Xmas! And I have the stuff - I even have stuff pulled out and waiting to go, I just haven't had the time (and honestly haven't really had the motivation :confused3) to work on them. I think 've juse been occupied with other stuff going on the last month (the surgery, birthdays, DC trip) and spending my free time outside when the weather is nice and also spending free time trying to exercise and take some walks. But it is suppsed to rain and be cold here this weekend so maybe I can work on them this weekend.

Do you know what the name or brand of the new products at Archivers that would be good for AK? I need to get some stuff for AK - hmmm, maybe I'll have to go there this weekend and look!!! I'd love to do a night or weekend crop at Archivers...have you ever done a crop anywhere??

What a special trip Karen! Thank you for sharing it! I can't believe your cab driver got into that accident AND charged you no less!!! You all saw so many sites while you were there! What a great tour!!

Still here, Karen! Thanks again for sharing you DC trip. I'm really hoping we get to go out there soon. It's next on our list of non-Disney places to visit!

I hear ya on the scrapbooking. I have so many projects going it's not even funny. I always tend to get these great ideas but then never finish them. It took me over a year to finish my WDW '08 scrapbook!

Thanks Beth! I've been working on a photobook of the pictures, I have to finish it to order it next week so I have it here to give my mom for Mothers Day. I think she'll really love it.

Still here, Karen! Thanks again for sharing you DC trip. I'm really hoping we get to go out there soon. It's next on our list of non-Disney places to visit!

Hope you had a Disney great trip!!! Just think....more pictures to scrap!

Yeah, I glanced at my pile of pictures yesterday - to remind myself how much I have to do and then spent the rest of my morning working on editing the 150+ pictures that I need to get printed from the last 2 months - figure I might as well get them ALL here and then I can start scrapping. Been occupied doing this photobook for my mom with the DC pictures, hope to have that done this week then I can try to get back to my regular pix. I start out the same way - tons of motivation, excited for a new project....then it kind of fizzles out. At least I'm not scrapping the DC pix - that would probably take me a year! Took over 500 pix! I've never done a digital photobook but I think it's the best way to go - both my sister and I can order one and get one for mom. I don't even want to think about how many pictures I'll take at Disney!!! :rotfl:

grrrr...for whatever reason I went out to Southwest's site today and the price of our flights dropped!!! :headache:

Not a huge amount, $11 per picket per way, so $88 total. Not going to rebook it or anything, but I hate when I know I could get something cheaper and can't!!! Last time I checked they were up $10 more than what I paid, so I was so proud of myself for getting them while they were "cheap"....hmmm guess that's not quite the case! :lmao:
