DD is about to get her driver's permit today. She has begged me to take her driving TODAY. ;)

I was really hoping DH would be the first to sit shotgun while she took the wheel, but he's out of town for a couple days, so it looks like it's me. ;)

Tell me, how did that go if you were the first "passenger"? :)

My daughters first 6 hours were with a driving instructor. That's the deal in NJ at 16. Then the rest has been with me. I'm proud to say she's actually a good driver for only 6 months.

She's handled herself very well in some situations. Had people pull out infront of her and had an animal run in front of the car (a bear no less).

The first few times out were rough for me.....

Oh Good Lord - please, NO BEARS today. ;) :teeth:

good luck, first time in I took my motorcycle helmet and put it on. :rotfl:

You'll do fine. Amazing how we were just changing diapers and now they're driving.

I'll get DH's goalie mask and put that on. :rotfl:

Ain't that the truth, from diapers to driving - in the blink of an eye. :)

You gotta do it's a moment to remember......... :teeth:

We'll be doing this next year. I'm really hoping it's her dad. He's a cop and has taught several other kids how to drive and can take her out to the police driving range where she can't hit anything. :teeth:

I think DH would be good with her, too. I'm not known for my great patience with other drivers in the car--I'm not a very good passenger at the best of times.

Bears????

I took DD that night to a large, empty parking lot, and let her drive around. For the first few times she drove, I thought I was going to get whiplash from how hard she hit the brakes.

I did most of the riding with her; when I'd pick her up or drop her off anywhere, she'd drive. I did make DH go with her a few times.

She's had her license since February, and is a VERY good driver. I'm very proud of her. When we got home from passing her license road test, she drove off with her younger sister to do some errands. Now THAT was difficult to see her driving off WITHOUT me in the car.

bears in jersey?!?!?! woah..lol

When i got my permit, i was with the instructor for 6 hours and then whenever i had to go to school or run an errand, mom or dad had me drive...
i hated driving with dad, for some reason he made me nervous, but i was fine with mom...

True story. My first driving experience was with my dad. He made me drive all over the East Side of Buffalo - and we stopped at 3 bars. He had a drink at each one. Probably not a very admirable way to instruct a new driver, but that's the way it went. I grew up in a different era. ;)

My ds is at that age, and I have been the one next to him while he's behind the wheel.

I get a little nervous, but he's getting more confident, so that's good.

DD got her permit in May. DH took her out for the first time in parking lot and then on the road. She almost hit a guardrail :bitelip: . DH knocked the car out of gear and pulled the parking brake on immediately. I will not take her out driving until I don't know when!! She is very strong willed.

It was me, and I found I did best if I just closed my eyes. ::yes::

Yeah and they've killed 2 dogs where I live in the last couple of weeks. Bears here are an everyday sighting.

DD got her permit when she was 15, after six hours of driving instruction from ...her instructor! Then it was my turn. She also drove with her Dad occasionally when she visited him on weekends. I really dreaded driving with her because I am a terrible backseat driver and her Dad, I thought, would have done a much better job.

WRONG!!!! I amazed myself - calm, collected and casual!! I don't know where it came from, and she was as surprised as I was. But I could immediately see the confidence it gave her. In contrast, her Dad was a door-hugging, brake-stomping idiot who called her on every little mistake and made her feel badly every time they drove.

Guess who she liked to drive with?? And guess who is a fabulous and safe driver now, with almost a year of licensed driving under her belt, including trips down I40 and I85??

You can do it, Mom!!!!

My Mom was with me. I didn't want to drive. Try teaching someone who is scared and doesn't even want to do it! Plus my Mom is not the most patient, understanding person in stressful situations. I did much better when it was my Dad and I.

I have already told DH that he is teaching our kids to drive. I really can't do it. I am like my Mom, but I know my limits!

You'll do fine. Just remember to breathe now and then!

I was the first 'victim' LOL

DD stayed in the parking lot and driving areas of the local college, during the summer when not many other cars around, for some time before graduating to the 'real streets'.

I think DH and I shared it pretty equally, but it was nerve-racking! She did fine, and its been 4 years now with no major complaints (a few bumps along the way but what's a scratch here and there?)

DS however turns 16 next month, he's going to be a whole other story! He thinks somehow since he racks up so many pts playing 'need for speed' that he's ready for the real thing. Hello, video games are not life!! LOL

Good luck. :sunny:

It was my dad, then my mom, then straight to the driving teacher. :)

My DD got her permit in May and she actually had my sister take her to the high school parking lot her 1st time. I was next, then DH. DH and I now let her drive us places and I kind of enjoy it. She also goes with a driving instructor at school once a week. She now realizes driving a car requires total concentration, all the time. I'm proud of her, she's doing great, so far. :sunny:
