Your Kids Doing the Soulja Boy Dance

That's originally from Supertramps "Breakfast in America" and it's a greaaaaattt song :thumbsup2 I love Supertramp! The original's much better than when Gym Class Heroes sampled it... just saying :lmao:

I agree, but I'm 23 - no one my age has any idea who did the original :rotfl:

Some of the songs that were popular when I was a teen didn't even bother to be subtle. One song that comes to mind is Eric Clapton's "Cocaine". That was a hit song, everyone loved it, and no one was complaining about it. Didn't make me want to go out and DO cocaine, but I still liked the song.

I'd never censor the music my kids listen to, or the books they read. My parents felt the same way. I turned out o.k. (for the most part :p ).

"Censorship" would be asking that the song not be published or sold. I don't care if other people buy it, I just don't want to support or endorse that kind of music in my home.

Why is that wrong?

Aren't parents "allowed" to have any standards? I don't let my kids watch R rated movies - is that censorship because I won't let my four year old watch Saw? There are TV shows that I think are inappropriate for their age, books that I think are inappropriate for their age and yes - music that I think is inappropriate for their age.

Just as you all don't see what the big deal is with this music, I don't see what the big deal is with some people not liking it, and not wanting their kids to listen to it.

:scared1:

Wow - I guess I am just astounded that there are so many people that think the things described (superman, spiderman etc...) are just sexually explicit and do not see them for the degrading, demeaning and foul actions toward women that they are. Maybe I am more of a prude that I ever realized, because I would NEVER - EVER let a man do those things to me under ANY circumstances.

To me, the things talked about fall outside of normal sexual behavior. The other songs that have been brought up (Paradise by the Dashboard Lights, Physical etc...) while containing sexual references - implied or explicit - are still within what I consider normal boundaries.

I learn more about my fellow man here on DIS everyday.

I would be lying to you if I told you I cared.

I can remember listening to:

Steppenwolf's "The Pusherman"

Neil Young's "The Needle and the Damage Done"....."I love the needle and I love the man....."

and a host of other druggie lyrics that were explicit. Drug lyrics were an anathema in the 60s and 70s and the music very often didn't have a danceable beat. So we listened to it for shock value. The minute my parents stopped being shocked, we moved on.
Except that you've got the lyrics wrong for the Neil Young song. He said "I sing the song because I love the man," not "I love the needle and I love the man." It's an angry anti-drug song. And the Steppenwolf song's lyrics are "god damn the pusherman." Also an anti-drug song.

Plus it's safe to say that 13YO girls weren't singing either of those songs. Unlike Soulja Boy. My 13YO granddaughter was singing it a few weeks ago, and I asked her if she knew what supermanning is. She didn't, and decided she'd rather not hear it from me.

And maybe if teenagers and pre-teens don't know what this crud means, it doesn't matter. But if they're curious, the answer is just a Google away. Of course, they'd have to know how to use the internet (which they all do).

But you said you like to dance to it, so that pretty much implies it.
I said I like to dance to "She Bop". I had never even heard of Soulja Boy before reading this thread. I think you need to reread my post.

That's what I was referring to... She Bop.

Your kids, your rules. I said *I* would not censor my kids music or reading material, and by that I meant I would not restrict them from listening to something they liked or reading a book they were interested in. I really have no business saying what you should do with your own children, which is why I didn't quote you or make any mention to you or any other poster on this thread.

I haven't read through all 6 pages of this, but I can tell you my kids love doing that dance. I play music for their school dances. First 2 dances I played this song, until the principal came up and told me to stop while telling me exactly why. I was slightly embarassed :rolleyes1

Now I'm LMAO and here's why. The Pusher was released in 1968. I was 11. When Harvest was released in 1972, I was 15. I assumed that the lyrics were pro-drug. Never thought anything about it. It just proves that kids don't pay attention to lyrics when they like the music.

We don't censor in our household either. My parents didn't and my husband is very anti-censorship on a national level. It trickles into our household decisions. My son (age 13) is currently reading The Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx. My husband read it and I'll read it next. We'll discuss it. That's how we deal with this sort of thing.

I don't censor what my kids read/listen to as well.

Surely there is something out there that even the most liberal parent would draw the line at. Hardcore violent pornography? Child pornography? Snuff films?

We all draw the line in different places. I guess I bristle at the word "censorship" because that has such a controlling, negative connotation and I just don't understand what is so terrible about feeling that certain things are inappropriate for children.

To those of you who say you don't censor - is there truly NOTHING you would prohibit your child from seeing or hearing?

Scary, isn't it,when 9 year olds are left to their own devices with no parental authority whatsoever? I'm so sorry my kids are going to have to live in a world run by adults who are damaged by the garbage their parents let them experience all in the name of "non-censorship". It's called PARENTING, people, give it a try!

I, who am liberal to the nth degree in everything else in my life, censor the heck out of what my kids see. At least the youngest. I don't have much control over what my 15 and 17 year olds see anymore. Childhood is precious and far too short to be dancing to a song like that. My older kids are well adjusted and aware of the world around them, they know what that song is about. I don't think that my 9 year old should have to hear it though.
Her world is that of a child. In that world, unfathomable acts of immaturity and degradation against women shouldn't be prevalent. It's my job to keep it that way. There's plenty of time later in life to learn what pigs people can be.

OK, I'll step up. I don't think I've posted about this particular subject yet. I'm fairly liberal and yes, I let my kids listen to Soulja Boy and other things they probably shouldn't. But it's for the music, not the lyrics. I can't imagine that any parent would really allow their kids to listen to anything. Yes, I will "censor" songs. If we're listening to a CD or satellite radio, I'll turn down the volume when a swear word comes up. And there are some songs that I will turn off completely. But as far as the regular radio goes, I pretty much let them listen to everything there. As long as I like it. If I don't like, I change the channel. With many songs, I generally don't understand what's being said, much less any vulgur or hidden meaning behind. I'm fairly sure my 3-and 6-year-olds don't either.

Sure there is. I censor what they watch in movies. Just not their music or their reading material. They get their reading material from the public library and so far haven't checked out any child pornography.

Funny stuff. I love the DIS, especially during the holidays. :lmao: Tell you what, how about you parent your own kids and stop the Judgy McJudgy when it comes to me and mine?

+1
But then again maybe some women are into this type of thing :confused3

I guess I just can't see singing or dancing with my DD to a song that says "ho" in it. Not the kind of mother/daughter bonding I am looking for :)
I guess I am just a big old fuddy duddy at the age of 29!
