for me today, it's gutters. Never thought I would have to buy gutters, but we just bought a house that didn't have them. Seems weird to me. But they are going up now, and I am looking forward to not having an ice covered front step!! But there is a point where you come to a realization that you are an adult...when you have to buy grown up stuff, and actually get excited about it. My first time this happened....I bought a washer and dryer. What's yours?

I hear you! We bought our then 11 year old house in 2000 and the previous owners never put gutters on :confused3 It was the first thing we added in the spring of 2001!!! Enjoy your gutters!!!!:goodvibes

I was excited when we bought our current house, I was excited when I bought my first washer and dryer and dishwasher.

However the most excited I was and the first time I felt like an adult was when I bought my first good set of pots and pans. I was so thrilled because before then I had mostly hand me downs from my mom. Then of course there was the $30 cheap stuff I bought when I was in college. However, the day I went and picked out my first set of T-fal pots and pans and felt the weight and knew they would be good for years to come (That was 5 years ago that I bought those and they still look almost new) I really felt like a grown up and was so excited.

I think for me it was when i bought a family room furniture set right before I got married. It was the first time that I was buying real furniture.

Thousand dollar handbags and handmade shoes, gets me everytime! and yes I can afford them! as I have no debt, don't believe in it!

I built my house in the mid-70s and still don't have gutters. Guess I'll have to find something else to get excited about. I was pretty happy yesterday that they finally came and redid the insulation in my attic. The company had cancelled over and over since October.

Mine was a vaccuum for hardwood floors that we put in last winter...to get pet hair and dirt....

A couch and loveseat! From a *real* furniture store, lol. And a 'big girl bed' for my DD. Nothing makes you feel like an adult like buying a bed for your kid! :lmao:

Silk sheets, they feel so good! I had always had the cheap sheets from Wal-Mart, etc. This past Christmas I used my Christmas money (presents) to buy them. Wish I had done it sooner, but now my kids know how good they feel and want their own or try to sneak into my bed! lol:grouphug:

The house I am in I bought w/ exDH when we were 20, then we rented it out when we went out of state for work.

After the divorce, I decided to use the house as my own, I painted it and put new carpeting in (installed professionally...not by family/friends no less!). The house is small, but I painted light walls and light carpets and when I walked in the first time and saw it all shiny and clean, I just knew I was going to be ok on my own :goodvibes

Of course the flip side is now, 14 years later, whenever something breaks I wish someone else was around to deal with it! :rotfl:

This makes me laugh because soon the excited turns into oh no another budget buster my washer machine died, etc :lmao:. We bought our house 3 years ago thankfully the only thing we had to replace is the washer machine and no I was not exited.

I was just telling my daughter this morning that I'm still waiting for "maturity" to kick in. Or to feel like a responsible adult. :rotfl:

But I guess I felt what you are talking about when my then DH and I purchased a brand new bedroom set at an actual furniture store. It cost so much, it scared me...now I pay more than that for one piece of furniture! :lmao:

Fun thread...thanks!:thumbsup2

I just got new stainless steel kitchen appliances, and was totally excited. Any new gadget or appliance for my kitchen makes me happy. I would rather have those things than sparkly jewelry.

Well, I wouldn't call it excited necessarily...but I did feel very grown up and responsible when we did it. We just did our estate planning - which included a will, powers of attorney and health care power of attorney.

I'm sure I'll feel much more excited when I start paying my son's college tuition in August! :yay:

I'm torn... I can't decide if it is the new tires my DH got me for Christmas or the concrete circle driveway I bought him. :lmao:

HMMMMM a few things I have 'bought' have made me feel like an adult.

A house
A car
A wedding dress

Oh yeah and paying into retirement.

...and I'm only 26 :rotfl2: :thumbsup2

A house. You just walk though the house 3 in the morning pointing at things saying, "that is mine", "that is mine", "that is mine"....... :confused3 One thing that i always found weird. When you finally pay off the loan. You get this paper and that is all. It is such a let down, like Willy Loman in the ground and the wife standing over him telling him the house is paid off... Weird.... :confused3

You know you are a grown up when you are excited about refinancing your house. We did that last week. Last month we bought a new A/C unit. Grown up excitement abounds :rotfl:

I've been living in a house without gutters for over 15 years and never had a problem not having them. I figure why pay for something that is not needed.

i think i started to feel like a grown up when i went out and bought my own bed linens. up until i was out of college the only time i got new sheets or anything was when my mom bought it for me for like an xmas gift or and i had never picked out the color/pattern. i decided i wanted a down featherbed, she thought i should get memory foam, but i didnt care i went out and got my feathers and invested in a few good pairs of sheets and tossed the old. i just moved out this fall and everyone tells me i need to trade in my twin bed for a grown up one. as far as im concerned it is my grownup bed.
