You HAVE to try this!! EBAY your way to DISNEY!!

Some pople have reported problems posting to ebay from AOL. Unfortunately AOL is the devil incarnate. It takes over your machine, cannot be completely uninstalled, and includes it's own version of software which can cause problems with websites like ebay. I make good money exorcizing AOL from customer machines.

AOL 7.0 had loads of bugs in the embedded browser. AOL 8.0 is a vast improvement over 7.0, so I would encourage anyone having problems with 7.0 and ebay to upgrade to 8.0. You don't have to download the update, you can upgrade using the 8.0 free trial disc that are available everywhere (Best Buy, Post office, the local laundromat, etc.).

Hope this helps.

My ebay login is the same as my DIS login. I've been selling on ebay since 1998.

Unfortunately AOL is the devil incarnate.

Why would you say that? I thought this thread was to encourage eBaying..not put down anyone's way of getting
there : (
I have been on eBay for a long time with AOL (I now have RR with it, and of course that speeds it up..as it would any dial up) and have not had any problems no matter which I have used..other than when using AOL's FTP. When our cable is down and I have to resort to dial up, I don't see any problems, other than slowness when using AOL (because it's dial up vs cable). I do use vs 8 now, since it's best with cable..but my laptop has 6, that I use when out of town to list (cell phone dial up..very slow cell phonedial up), and have no interest to update..why fix what isn't broken. If you do upgrade your AOL..I very strongly suggest you not d/l it, but upgrade fresh from a CD.
eBay can be understandably slow when they offer specials..no matter what program you use.

erinch,
Thanks for the computer tips. I have tried many of them already, but may need to do them again. I'll check out your site!

shovelhd,
I too think that AOL stinks, big time, but unfortunately that is my provider. I have two teen DD's who "must" have AOL. I really believe alot of my computer problems have to do with the Windows operating system though.

DMRick,
Ebay is definitely slower at certain times for sure. Early this morning, before 8am, I was able to list without any complications. I also changed the location to extract my pictures from, and that also seemed to help.

It's a good thing I have off this week to get set up and work out any questions or glitches I may encounter. I still haven't looked at any of my listings yet though. Too nervous to see if there are any bids!!!:teeth:

CINDALA: You should look at your listings, I just started this last Thursday and by the next morning I had like 7 bids out of 15 things, it's exciting to see those bids go up and up and up .............

Good luck!!

Donna

While I appreciate all the "thanks" for getting you guys motivated, we should all give a big round of applause to DMRick - because without her, I never would have gotten beyond "wishing" I could try eBay.. She has been a great inspiration to me - always ready to give a bit of advice when I need it.. The only reason I started this whole thread was to "pay it forward" - so to speak - and try to help some others out with my very limited knowledge.. I'm learning more each and every day, but without DMRick I doubt I ever would have gotten up the courage to actually try it..

Thanks, DMRick - you're the best!!! ;)

Although I'm not a huge fan of AOL, I would tend to think a lot of the problems with listing on eBay right now is this current 1 cent sale they have going on.. I've noticed the same slowness when I try to list items at times that are very popular with the majority of sellers.. I'm not sure if having another ISP would really make that much difference or not but "someday" (sigh) I hope to be able to switch to Road Runner because there are definitely days when I'm only trying to get on the DIS and AOL is SOOO slow I would like to put my foot right through my computer!! LOL

Anyhow - the beauty of ebay is you can use a variety of methods to list whenever you want, so if you can't get on there today (and you're not all that upset about missing the 1 cent sale) - just try again tomorrow!

Just get the stuff on there so we can all meet up in Disney World!!!!:) :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

{I'm blushing for sure}

No Carol Ann..you go right ahead and take the credit..you deserve it, as you are surely the one who is still all excited about eBay and are singing the praise, and fully encouraging everyone. I hleped you..but you've helped a whole bevy of people! (hmmm, I had to look that word up..I didn't even know I knew it..it means a group!).

I hope to be able to switch to Road Runner because there are definitely days when I'm only trying to get on the DIS and AOL is SOOO slow

There are days when I'm using straight Road Runner that the Dis is full of people posting, and I just fall asleep waiting to post!!

Okay - I hate to sound like an old "school marm" here - but I'm kicking this thread back up to ask:

How many of you got all excited about trying this ebay thing - but then didn't follow through with it??

Come on now.. Get moving.. I'm planning on being in Disney World next December and I want to see all of you there as well!!!!!! ;)

Okay, I definitely got started, and I finally looked at my listings! Out of 10 things I listed, 4 have bids. So today I added a few more things to the list. Let's see what happens over the weekend! Hopefully alot of action!

C.Ann, you are certainly correct; this is addicting! I have to thank both you and DMRick for lighting a fire under my butt, and getting me going. I can't tell you how long I've been trying to do this. My inexpensive little digital camera does the trick, and the set up on Ebay is pretty simple. The hardest thing is doing the research and getting an idea for what similar items to yours have sold for, and what to start at for an asking price.

Whatever I make is way more than a garage sale, were almost everyone wants to walk away with something for nothing. And I always wind up paying like $18 for ads in newspapers besides. Ebay looks cheap next to those fees!

Today is the last day for the 1 cent gallery. I listed a total this week of 252 items, and 25 have ended so far with Buy it Now (which I like, since it's more than I list for) and Second Chance offering, and another 9 have bids, with 3-10 days left to go. Some, as I mentioned earlier have wanted mulitples of what they won (yeah!). I get most of my hits on the last day. Get your stuff up, and feel the excitement!! I've more than cleared the expense and making some great money here! You can do it!!

How long do you typically post your auction for? Do you feel the longer the better or shorter? Do you typically get bids closer to the end of the auction? How many items do you put up at one time? Do you tend to group things or sell?

Just a few questions to gauge how I'm doing! Want to make sure I'm approaching this the right way.

I grouped all of my last auctions, set them up to go on at a certain time...and went away to work. Auction watch put them up for me in the appropriate time...but all mixed up LOL.
I do 10 days for sure, if I am selling several of the same items. Other than that, it depends on my mood LOL. Most of my hits are when the stuff goes up and then comes off..when it goes up, a good portion will be Buy it Nows (which I'm happy about). I have people asking questions now about stuff that is up, but they are waiting until the end, because there really is something to be said about wanting what another person has. If you bid early, someone else seems to think it must be something good, and then the bidding wars begin. Some people wait til the end so that no one things the item is interesting. Of course then you take a chance the item will be bought buy it now. I just sold my retro diner clock (which reminds me of Beaches and Cream, to bring this back to Disney), and another person wrote and asked if I had another..she was waiting to bid. I did, so it's back up. I tend ot put up a lot at one time when I'm just back from vacation, and Sept-Jan. After this batch ends, Ill go back down to just a couple of dozen of the best sellers..just so people can still find me. I like a bunch up, because I tend to get multiple buyers (people buying more than one thing to combine shipping).

In order to get the most exposure out of your insertion fee, 7 days is best - although I have gone with 5 days if I knew ahead of time that I wouldn't be available when a 7-day auction ended.

I usually get a bid or two in the first couple of days - and then nothing until near the end.. The last hour or so can be pretty amazing.. If someone really wants your item, the price can go for much, much more than you would ever imagine..

I "try" to keep 20 auctions up at a time, but I've had a really bad week here (work, not feeling well, having to go out of town today, etc.) so I don't have hardly anything up right at the moment.. Hopefully I can change that tomorrow and get quite a few things up and running..

Some things I group - and others I list individually.. You can determine what works best by pretending that YOU are the buyer and asking yourself this question - "Would I pay "x" dollars and "x" shipping and handling for that item?" - or - "Gee, you know I would be willing to pay "x" for those things and "x" for shipping and handling because I'm getting "several" items..

I've seen a few things that I might have been interested in but because they were "single" items, the shipping and handling added on to the price I was willing to pay made them less desirable.. On the other hand, when I purchased the digital camera that I use for ebay (ON ebay), I felt the price for that one item - as well as the shipping and handling - was well within what I wanted to spend, so I did! ;) Actually, if I remember correctly, I think I bought it with the "Buy It Now" feature.. Some people really like that because they can just purchase the item right then and there and be done with it..

Guess you just have to experiment with all of the above and see what works best for you..

Good luck - and welcome to "DISer's Ebaying Their Way To Disney World".....:)

We've really gotta stop "meeting" this way!!! LOL:teeth:

LOL..hey I think you should stop by..or when I pick up the grands for the weekend I should make a stop to your house. My attic overfloweth with packing peanuts..but I don't want to stop anyone from dropping them off or saving them for me, or they'll get out of the habit. I also have a bunch of the air pillows..that I seldom use.

Oh..by grouping, did you mean selling several things at once? I thought you meant grouping them to show up in a row if someone looks at my auctions LOL.

Also, about length of auction. I sometimes like to get two weekends out of a sale..so I'll post them on Thuraday night and go for 10 days, which brings me to a week from Sunday. Those are prob the most populer days to post on eBay, so sometimes the place is slow, slow slow...but it also often has the most amount of people on, since they know that is the most poplular times LOL.

Thanks DMRick and CAnn for your help!

I'm trying my best to add to my pot for Disney..........Ebay has surely helped......even if it pays for a few meals while there it is soooo worth it!

Thanks for the PUSH!!!!

Now if only the AP rates would come out for the end of August I don't have to worry about my pot being so big!!! LOL!!!

About a month ago I thought that I would bite the bullet and start to sell on ebay here in the UK after buying a few things for a while - why oh why didn't I do this earlier so far in just under a month I have £350 ($530) in our account originally for PE upgrades but at this rate I might be able to fit in another WDW holiday before next year! So go ahead and give it a try what have you got to loose here in the UK at the moment items starting at less than £1 ($1.66) cost £0.10p($0.15) to list so if it doesn't sell that's all you've lost, I do agree though research on ebay what you want to sell and check what others have sold that item for or not sold it as the case maybe.

Okay class - time to turn in your assignments.. ;)

I want all of my "students" to report how they have been doing with their sales the past few days..

And for those "students" who have even started their assignments yet, you better have a GOOD reason!!

-----------

If this "class" is going to make a class trip to Disney World, EVERYONE has to participate!!!!!!!!:teeth:

ME FIRST, ME FIRST .................This was the first things I had every listed. I had 17 up for auction, they all closed this weekend, my list for all 17 was $187 and they closed at $380.94, all I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't even expect to get what I listed so I'm an very surprised and happy!! I just wish I had started this a lot sooner, I would have been able to make more trips to WDW.

Hope everyone is doing as well as I did.

Donna

Congratulations!! You get an A+ !!
