So we're considering a trip next August (dependent largely on airfare!) and while I know you can't get Airtran's rates yet, I did look out as far as you could and it was showing around $170 each way! I booked about 4 months out for our last trip and paid $80 each way. What has your experience been? thanks!!

Yes, generally they do. And if they do, make sure to call and get difference credited to your account.

So, as you are watching the fares to see how low they will go, and getting closer to the date you want to travel, how close do you wait till you can figure they've probably gone down as much as is probable and time to finally buy? Thanks!

I was able to get $79 rates for this August when I booked in April. They did go up in May, I remember because I checked for a friend of mine. GL:wizard:

Not necessarily. Last year they went up after I booked by over $40, but this year they came down after I booked. I just wouldn't bank on the prices going down, as it is not a guarantee.

Sorry!

I have noticed in my own Airtran airfare watching that they are releasing flight schedules out earlier than their web deals. For example, the most recent flight I booked had schedules released a week or two before web specials were released (80 dollars for my city), but were showing high fares. I'd suggest watching the dates you've been testing over the next few weeks and log how they behave. It sounds silly, but it helped me know when to book :)

Also, as a final tip, if you pay attention to when the current sale fares end, you'll know when the next price change will happen (barring selling out of specific seat fares). So, on September 17, the current flights you're watching may experience a price shift.
