Yet another UY question from a potential buyer...

I've been researching DVC yearly since my DH visited on our honeymoon in 1999 LOL. The closest we've come to purchasing was actually purchasing 160 points at AKV direct in 2008. We came home, and 2 days later called our guide and cancelled the contract. We got cold feet and felt like we were making a mistake. Of course NOW I wish we had just kept it because we've made 2 trips since then, includng one at the Contemporary.

Last year we stayed a split stay at POP and CBR. While the trip was fun, it didn't stop us from inquiring at the desk of the Contemporary what it would cost to upgrade :rotfl2: It was more than we wanted to spend for the time we had left. We decided from then on out that we are a deluxe family, there's no way around it LOL.

Anyhow....I've been back researching again, and I realize resale really is the only thing that makes sense. While SSR is an AMAZING price, my DH and I can't say that we'd be happiest there if that's what we were "stuck" with. Our primary choice would be BLT for a variety of reasons.

I'm still totally confused on the UY issue though! Our last 4 trips have been 2 September trips and 2 November into December trips. Currently, we're thinking we are going to go back next year in October and we realize we may only have a few more years of pulling our son out of school for vacations. With that in mind, we will need to change our vacations to school breaks and/or summer.

That's where my confusion comes into play. Initially I was thinking anything between August-December would work for us...now?? I'm not totally sure! I want to be able to zero in when looking at contracts, and I feel like currently I'm looking all over the place :crazy2:

TIA!
Shannon

no UY month covers everything, so that's just a choice you make. figure out what 3 month period you are least likely to travel and go with the month after that. you can still book a march trip with a june UY, it's just a little riskier if you need to cancel after your banking window closes on jan 31.

(i wouldn't buy SSR if you'd feel stuck having to stay there. buy somewhere that at least you wouldn't mind staying, even if it's not BLT. but if BLT is the only resort that will make you happy, you probably should buy there assuming you can book 10-11 months out.)

If you'll more than likely be taking trips in the summer or on fall/winter break school break schedules, a June use year would be a good one for you.

Use year most comes into play when you have to cancel a vacation early or need to bank your points. Your deadline to bank points (so you don't loose them) is 4 months prior to the end of your use year. If you have a June UY then you have until the last day of January to bank your points if for some reason the previous years summer/fall/December vacation had to be postponed.

Are there UYs available for every month of the year? I ask as there are many months I have not seen come up for sale (i.e. May).

no jan, may, july or november.

and the other months are not evenly distributed (someone has actually done the math to see which UY months are more common at certain resorts.)

I think FEB is the most common at BLT. I've been looking for a BLT AUG uy for several months and saw very few to almost none. BUT FEB and MARCH (#2) are abundant!

I wonder why that is?

if you are really curious about the breakdowns, here is the link:

not sure anyone knows the "whys," though.

Mahalo Chalee94! That was interesting. AND it confirms my observations about BLT and Feb uy. It's by far the biggest distribution of points. Aug is one of the lowest volume. Guess I'll be waiting for a while for that perfect contract.
