I know there are several vacuum threads and I have read through many of them.

Yes, my vacuum died. I had a kenmore canister for years. I am looking at the dyson animal. I'm wondering how this works on hardwood floors. Before the breakdown, I used my canister beater bar on the carpet and in the kitchen with the brush (not beater bar) attachment. I have seen mixed reviews on the animal on hardwood. If I get the basic animal without extra attachments, will it do a good job in the kitchen too?

Thanks so much.

I would just get the basic it works just as well as the animal. The basic does great on hardwood and kitchen floors

The animal ones are good maybe get the ball one dc 26 in adjusts to different floors

the basic & the animal have the same suction the only difference is the attachments

My Dyson has a button on top that I push when I'm off the carpet. it stops the brush from spinning. I LOVE this vacuum. I can stand on the bottom step and vacuum all of my steps from one spot. No more bending over with a heavy Kirby.

I would get the regular one. We have the animal and the novelty of the additional attachments wore off after 3 months or so. You can always buy the attachments later on.

I swear by my Dyson. We kept buring through (literally) Hoovers every 1.5 years (lab + my long hair)...and although the Dyson doesn't suck as well as the Hoover (close, but not as good), I'll take longevity over a small decrease in suction.

For hardwoods, works fine. We still use the Swiffer vac on our hard surfaces after vacuming (think small children and aforementioned dog).

We have the animal and a lot of hard wood. I just turn the beater bar off and vacuum away.

Thanks for the advice. I will look into the basic and the animal. I really haven't looked at them much, except online. I need to see some in person. Good to know they will work on carpet on hardwood.

I don't know if they changed it much since then, but I had a dc07 animal about 8 years ago. It was AWEFUL on hard floors. And it started to lose suction after 3 years. At 4-5 years it died completely and I replaced it with a Miele.

If you can go to a store where you can test the Dyson, do.

If you decide on Dyson watch for the deals on Woot! We got our refurbished Dyson Animal for $199 and $5 shipping. They have Dysons on every few weeks. It says 6 month warranty but when we registered the vacuum on the Dyson site we got the full warranty.

I have an Animal, it's about 6 years old now, we have hardwood floors in the living areas and hallway, tile in the kitchen and bathrooms and carpet in the bedrooms. The Animal covers all 3 perfectly, goes from room with a simple adjustment and works great. I'd get another in a heartbeat.

I have both the Dyson Animal (the ball one) and the Shark Navigator Lift Away. I honestly see no difference between the two except that the Shark is lighter and the lift away is a dream on stairs. Oh yeah, and the Shark is about 1/4 the price.

I realize that I'm probably in a minority, but we have the dyson animal and - if it's truly possible to hate an inanimate object - then I hate my Dyson. We actually went out and bought a cheap Hoover to leave in our basement so I didn't have to keep carrying the Dyson up and down the stairs. It's heavy and awkward! And I will often carry the Hoover around the house because it's lighter, AND has better suction! The attachment handle on the Dyson is ridiculous because it's inflexible for the first 18-20 inches and makes doing stairs a joke. I will never ever ever own a Dyson again.

I really recommend that before you spend all of the money you check out other models. Several friends and two of my aunts swear by their Oreck's...and they're about 1/5 of the cost. If you still opt for the Dyson, I would pick the lightest weight model.

This, but I paid $249. It comes in perfect. So far we love it.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm not sure what to get. I guess I really need to look at them. I am not wanting to get a new vacuum, but the Kenmore was about 10 years old and it is done. I really like a canister. So, I will consider all that you have said and check some out. I can think of more exciting things to shop for.

If anyone has more advice, let me know.
thanks again.

I thought it was awful on carpet as well, and it was less than three before mine lost suction...I didn't get three out of it.

I love my Meile - but it certainly wasn't inexpensive. My Oreck is now fifteen years old and while we've had to replace the cord, runs great. I finally threw away the almost thirty year old cheap Sears Kenmore I got when I moved into my first apartment - it was vaccuuming the basement up until about a month ago. The only vaccuum that I haven't had a good experience with is the TWO Dysons - my first one was finally replaced as a lemon after being in the shop three times for slipped gears - the second did the same thing.

I'd check consumer reports-I've been looking for a vacuum and dysons get poor reviews on CR consistently.

I have a habit of buying less expensive vaccuums and just replacing them after two or three years. I bought a Eureka Airspeed Gold at Kohl's about 9 months ago. I absolutely LOVE it. I know that Walmart carries this one for under $100. I got it for $139.99 less 30% off coupon plus Kohl's cash.

I love it so much that I bought 2 more today and plan on freecycling the one for our basement and the one for our upstairs. Before you think I'm frivolous, I did have a large credit on my Kohl's account that I used. So 2 vaccuums cost me just under $200.00 plus I added a couple of packages of socks (which DD really DID need) to put it over $200.00 and got $40.00 Kohl's cash. After all is said and done I got 2 vaccums and 8 pairs of socks for $170.00.
