Yes! Michael Vick Indicted

:sad2: :sad2: As long as there is a segment of culture that validates such things, this kind of cruelty will continue. Mike Vick is a good poster boy for the problem, but he is the tip of the iceberg.
Too true. I can only hope that someone like this, with celebrity status, can be made an example of and maybe make people think twice about it. Even just one person being made accountable is better than none.

Goodell seems to be carrying a bigger stick than Tagliabue did. And, he's willing to use it. :thumbsup2

Goodell is one of the best things to happen to the NFL in a long time. Far too many players were tarnishing the image of the sport in the 1990's and as a Dallas Cowboy fan since the early 70's, I remember that decade well. Paul Tagliabue let way too much thug behavior go on and just ask Micheal Irvin how much he got away with under Tagliabue.

The owners of the NFL are worried about the same thing happening to them as it it did the NBA. A lot of fans like me, left the NBA because of the image, attitude, and the thug life of the newer players. I grew up watching Dr. J in the 70's and Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Micheal Jordan, etc and it was a great time in the early 80's to be a NBA fan. The Lakers and Celtics had some legendary series together and both were great teams. Same with the Chicago Bulls and Micheal Jordan was not only a great player, but a fairly classy role model for the NBA. I left the NBA in the late 90's, as a lot of people did and haven't looked back.

The NFL is nipping this in the bud so to speak and it's long overdue. The NFL is a money making machine and no owner wants to derail it. Hopefully this will be the end of Micheal Vick's career and people will use him as a example of what not to do.

I guess 'innocent until proven guilty' doesn't apply here, eh? I've always detested dog fight people but I'm waiting to see how this one plays out. Does owning the property make him guilty of these crimes? A friend of mine did time because people working for him were committing crimes at his business. He maintained innocence and I believed him. I'm al for ruining Vick if he's guilty. Remember how horrible some of us thought those Duke boys were JUST BECAUSE they were said to be guilty by the prosecutor.

We aren't sure what she's mixed with. Our best guess is a boxer or possibly some type of pointer. I'd love to see what your Sharpei/Pit looks like!

Our pitty mix doesn't have an aggressive bone in her body. In fact our neighbor's Shepard tore her up last year when the Shepard got out of her yard and into ours. Roxie just rolled over and was very submissive, and couldn't understand why her "friend" from across the fence wouldn't play. She defintely has the strength to hold her own, but just does not have that kind of temperament. I hate to think what they have to do to those dogs to make them fighters. It just makes me sad and angery.

I'm sure when my son grows up he'll do his best to be a good role model to others--but he first has to decide of he's going to be a rock star like Bon Jovi or in the NFL. He's 11 and has all the dreams of an 11 year old. I love it!

Here's a bigger picture of what's in my sig. He has the fur & tail of a pit but everything else is Sharpei. He's a great dog, but he's protective of our house. Our vet told us his "bad traits" come from the Sharpei side of him :) He's a big mush ball with our kids and a big lap dog.

Long story short, after constant survelience and videotaping done from our kitchen, even getting the license plate of the car taking the dogs away - the police were encouraged by the reporter to take this seriously and at least one dog ring in our city was shut down. :thumbsup2

In your own backyard! What a great ending, you and your wife have done some good!

No, owning the property doesn't make him guilty, but from what I've read, he was directly involved. From cnn.com - "Participated in killing eight dogs", "Vick was intimately involved in the operation", "Vick personally paid $23,000 to the owner of the winning dog". Enough to be indicted!

Innocent until proven guilty always should apply. In this case, owning the property per se does not make Michael Vick guilty. However, this case has been going on for a long time and the evidence certainly does appear to indict him. If the news reports are correct, this has been going on for over six years.

Does the Duke case really apply here? This appears to be a totally different situation than that.

Michael Vick certainly has a lot of explaining to do to the public. This is a public relations nightmare for the National Football League.

Those of us who think that cruelty to animals is disgusting should make all efforts to expose this practice and speak out against it.

The Atlanta Falcons issued a statement saying the Vick situation "has been troubling to many people, including our fans, during the last few months," and that, "we are disappointed that one of our players -- and therefore the Falcons -- is being presented to the public in a negative way, and we apologize to our fans and the community for that."

The NFL, through spokesman Brian McCarthy, called the alleged activities "cruel, degrading and illegal," but added: "Michael Vick's guilt has not yet been proven, and we believe that all concerned should allow the legal process to determine the facts."

He makes me sick! I never liked him, he was never good for the team, and we can only hope we will never play for the Falcons again. Good riddance is all I have to say.

Well, The NFL commish has precedent for suspending Vick prior to conviction (re. Pacman Jones). If this is true, and there seems to be an ocean of evidence, I hope Vick never touches a football again. The only exception should be when he stars in the documentary version of "The Longest Yard". However I doubt Goodell will drop the NFL hammer too hard. As a previous poster said, there is a convicted drunk driving murderer playing for the Rams.:sad2:

The policy is for repeat offenders. Vick isn't considered one yet.

You know, we look back in history and cannot believe slave owners actually treated people as property. I hope the day comes when treating animals with zero respect because they are 'property' is seen in the same light...as a shameful, ignorant thing of the past.

Hear hear!

Tom Jackson, ESPN sports analyst, had some comments about this situation that are relevant.
He said that Arthur Blank, the owner of the Atlanta Falcons, is returning from vacation today. Tom said that he couldn't image Mr. Blank not saying something about Michael Vick soon.
The Falcons will probably be inundated with hostile fans and foes alike during the season if Michael Vick is allowed to play this season. The NFL just can not turn a deaf ear to this.

Public opinion dictates that something be done to resolve this outside of the legal problems that Vick faces. He has been on a short leash for giving the Atlanta fans the middle finger salute in a fit of anger. There have been other troubling aspects to Mr. Vick's tenure as a franchise player for the Falcons.

What do you think?

"Surry County[Vrginia] prosecutor Gerald Poindexter told the Associated Press Tuesday that he didn’t know of the indictment before it was filed, and said he’s not sure how the county will continue its separate case.

A grand jury is scheduled to meet on July 24."

Thank goodness a Federal grand jury is going to follow this case.

Amen to that!!!

Last night on the news, Poindexter wouldn't speak to the reporters (not that that's a big deal) but instead allowed his son to speak for him!!!

I just thought that was TOTALLY wrong!! This man is an officer of the court, not a private business owner. His son should not be effectively representing the Commonwealth in a matter such as this.

Poindexter needs to be fired or impeached or whatever!

Hell yeah he is responsible for what goes on in his house and on his property. Even if he was never there during a one of the events (and many reports says he was) he is still ultimately responsible for what was found there and possibly what was done there if the evidence supports illegal activity.

Just saw on a newsbreak how he killed his "losing" dogs by hosing them down and electrocuting them. :sad2: :sad1: May he meet a similar fate some day.

After seeing this cruel sports aftermath up close, it sickens me. The neighbors behind us (we live in a typical burb subdivision) were keeping the fighting pit bulls belonging to their daughter's boyfriend. 4 fighting males and a constantly pregnant and starving female.

The female was kept nearest to us. We would often throw milkbones over the fence to her - you could see her ribs protruding through her skin. 3 of the males were vicious and would lunge for us when we came in our backyard (they were chained with a thick chain and we have a chainlink fence.) The other male desperately wanted to get away and would often jump our fence in the middle of the night, his chain hanging him by the neck from our fence. DW Lauri, who is trained in handling aggressive dogs, would go out there and save him, climbing the fence and lifting him over. We didn't dare take him in because 1) we didn't know these people, and 2) no matter how well Lauri handles aggressive dogs, you can't predict these dogs.

The boyfriend would show up daily and inject the dogs with something. On the weekends they would put them in a car. The would come back the next day covered in blood, with poorly set broken limbs. :sad1:

We tried going to the police but were never taken seriously. When a local news station did a story on pit bull fighting making it out to the burbs, Lauri contacted the reporter and told him what we had seen going on behind us.

Long story short, after constant survelience and videotaping done from our kitchen, even getting the license plate of the car taking the dogs away - the police were encouraged by the reporter to take this seriously and at least one dog ring in our city was shut down. :thumbsup2

Awful story with a good ending. I don't know what I would do if we had neighbors like this....it's sickening. Great job by you guys.

I just read the indictment and it's awful. I still can't figure out the allure of dog fighting and why in the world people would find it fun. Furthermore, to treat the animals the way the did when they lost is DISGUSTING. Do these people have any heart or conscience?

How so?

I like your son! What is your pit mixed with? Ours is a Sharpei/pit mix.

My grandparents have two pit/sharpei mixes. Duke and Jasmine...they think they are lap dogs. :)

I'm not even going to read the stories or the indictment. I can't even watch Animal Cops on AP anymore. :(

I could never watch that show. I think that all of the people including police and rescue people who work with these abused animals do a great service. I wish I was able to assist in that way.

Despite the outcome of the charges the people looking for him to pay big should get used to the idea of him getting very little. If what I heard this morning is true, the max sounded like 6 years which means somebody with the money Vick has will get less, maybe much less. I also doubt he will be doing any time with anybody that could take him physically.

Not necessarily the way it should be, but it is the way it is.
