We've been shopping around for a new fridge for a few weeks. We currently have a fridge on top/freezer on bottom model. I really want a french door with freezer on bottom. Dh wants side by side. For those of you who've had either or both, could you tell me the pros/cons of either type? TIA!

We went from a side by side to french door model in October when we moved into our new house and I love it! We have so much more room in the fridge and the freezer now. We rarely use our deep freeze in the garage now and we don't have to turn pizza boxes sideways. I also didn't have to totally purge everything in my fridge to make room for Thanksgiving stuff like I had to do with our side by side.

I like my side by side.......but I have a large one
DS has freezer on bottom and side by side refrigerator doors and hates it.

A side by side seems so cramped to me. I love the ability to slide a wide drawer out and be able to see much of the food in there. With a side by side, I spent time digging and trying to rearrange...sometimes throwing stuff across the room in frustration. Yeah, I did. :o Very little patience.

I have had 3 kinds. Traditional was ok. Had a side by side, and thought I would love it, and even though it was a larger one, I still didn't like it. Now I have a french door with the bottom freezer drawer and I LOVE it. I never have food freeze in the fridge part which always seemed to be the problem with past refrigerators and it holds so much in a way that is easy to locate items. With both doors on the fridge swinging open it seems to be easier to get larger things in and out. And the freezer holds so much. Live a PP mentioned, we hardly use our extra freezer in the garage anymore at all.

annej, now that you mention it, we've not had anything freeze in the fridge either and that was a constant issue in every side by side that we've had.

My MIL has the french door with freezer on the bottom and she loves it. Her other son and his wife got one, and her daughter also got one. I would love to have one, but it won't fit in my kitchen, at least where the spot is for the fridge.

Thanks everyone! We're heading out tonight to buy one, and even though side-by-sides seem to be less expensive, I think I'm set on the french door/freezer on bottom. We have 2 dogs and I know their noses will be sticking into those bottom shelves every time I open the door if we got a side-by-side.

Since we built our house 16 years ago, refrigerators have gotten quite a bit larger. We've got 33" (width) to fit the fridge in between the oak end of our kitchen and the counter that separates it from the stove. Most models are 35 3/4" and larger. So we're kind of limited in what we get which has been super frustrating! I found a Samsung model I like that will fit, so I think that's what I'm going to go with. Wish us luck!

I have an lg French door with two bottom drawers and ice/water in the door. Love it. No minuses. Easier to get stuff in the freezer is the big plus.

When our bottom freezer model broke, I let my husband win and get a side by side.

He hears about it everyday and can't wait until the day we can a new fridge that has actual space in it. Get anything but the side by side.

We had the same issue with the space for our fridge being small. We just bought a 22 c cubic foot Samsung French door and I LOVE it! Tons of space and nothing falls out when you open the freezer door...lol

HH Gregg had a good price on it and actually had a floor model to look at which was nice.

I hated my French door. Freezer was always open forever while I was digging around for things. Back to side by side and very happy. We have a freezer on top in the basement for the occasional party tray need. Different strokes for different folks.

Purchase has been made! After much hemming/hawing and inner debate (while my dh stood idly by wanting NO part in the final decision so that I'd only have myself to blame, lol,) I went with the french door/freezer on bottom. Because of the narrower width we were limited to, I made the heart-wrenching decision to NOT get the ice/water dispenser in the door (I REALLY wanted that feature!!!) It just took up too much space in the fridge. So, I got a model that has a filtered water dispenser INSIDE the fridge and just the auto ice maker in the freezer. I almost went with the side-by-side that had the in door ice/water dispenser, but I've just heard such negative things from peeps with the side-by-side models. So, I hope I'm happy - it gets delivered on 12/11. Thanks for the input everyone!

I went for the American style fridge freezer but as the previous poster didn't go for ice and water. The one I went for was £399 down by £100 for a fridge freezer I would need to get plumbing sorted out which would be about £100+ to sort out plus the fact that ones with ice and water are about £300 more so I will keep ice in the freezer and a filter jug in the fridge.

I LOVE my French Door. They have one now with a smaller drawer for drinks and such. I would love that one. I do not have ice/water in the door and wish I did. When I need a new one that's what I will get.
