That's great! We have a change jar too and I don't remember how much is in it when it is full but it is almost there. I think I will cash it in and put the money away for our next trip in November. Annmarie

i only saved pennies. :( tried to save change, always found my self and family dipping into it. but we did save 100 dollars in pennies. :p

Funny thing about change! Before DS left for first year in college he left his change all over the house - on his bureau, kitchen counter, pocket of pants, in the car ash tray, etc. I explained that he will need to be more aware of his money and change while away at school and that he should have a change jar like we do at home. He said he didn't need one! The funny thing is that he has only been at school for 2 weeks and today he told me that the change has come in handy for buying sodas and snacks. How a few weeks makes such a big difference. Annmarie

I have been saving my change since last Aug, I now deposit my change every month and put in in my ING account, as of today I have deposited $613. It paid for our airline tickets for next months trip, my daughters have deposited $48 in pennies. Wherever they are they will pick up pennies off the ground, esp at Walmart or the grocery store.

My kids were always robbing their piggy banks so while I was at the Dollar store I bought plastic piggy banks that has no plug to open up. It is a solid piece of plastic except for a small slit that they haven't been able to get into. They are almost half full with $1's and tons of change. I take mine and my husband's change at the end of the day and divide it up betweent he three kids.

My DS and I just rolled our change for our family trip in 10 days.

I usually have 2 change jars going - 1 just quarters for my Atlantic City habit (lol) and 1 for vacations. We went to Mystic, CT in July. So as of July 15th we've saved $103!! Plus I plan on sneaking $5 day from DH until we go. BTW, I don't tell DH how much was in the change jar until we are on our way. This way we don't figure it into the budget and its REALLY like EXTRA spending money.

I love the idea of putting it in an ING account! Opening an ING account has been on my 'to do' list for a long time. Earning interest on 'extra' money is a great incentive to save for our next trip. Have to do this next week.

Don't know if this would help but someone else on these boards said she had this same problem so what she did was save her change then pour a bunch of pennies on top so she couldn't get to the change.

You need to get a plastic jar or jug - duct tape the lid to the jar & put a slit in the top of it. This way you can't get to the change & you'll be able to save it. Believe me, you'll be glad you did. It adds up incredibly fast.

We have saved our change for what seems like forever. My oldest DD - 15 - was adamant that changed didn't add up to anything. I finally insisted that she start her own change jar so I could prove her wrong. It's just a plastic up that I keep in my closet. Well, I got a big laugh out of her today. She added more & then said "I counted & had about $7 the other day". Then she dumped it out & I said "I don't think you have to count it again, it can't be that much more". She said "I know, but I just like to look at it now & see how much it's growing"!!! :p

whether to count and roll my change now (since the change jar is almost full) or whether to wait until December just before we go to DL.

Someone posted a challenge a while back to see how much change we could save from then until the end of the year. I am thinking I'll wait. Maybe that will be our spending money or money for breakfast with Pooh. I am certain we have enough for at least one character meal.

Good luck everyone! :earsgirl:

I am saving one dollar bills to cover all tips. That way I don't have to include it in my budget and it's already counted out and placed in our tip envelopes when we pack!

We have 5 piggy banks set up. Pennies and quarters are big plastic banks that you can't get into. Nickels, dimes and Florida quarters are smaller glass banks.
I keep the Florida quarters seperate for something special. Maybe the airfare or tickets, haven't decided yet.
We aren't going again till Sept 2005.
Not planning on counting anything until we go or the bank is full, whichever comes first.

Well we've been saving since July, we've always had a change jar but just never really used it until then. We rolled it all the other night (since we told the kids it would be part of their spending money) and they just couldn't wait any longer to see how much....LOL We came out with 60.00, not bad for 2 months but still I wished we had started earlier. Now we can start saving for our next trip next year though....should be fun to see it adding up in our giant water jug.

I did have one question, do you all actually hand roll your coins when you're through or does your bank offer some sort of coin counter? I know out local store does but it cost to use it....so we hand rolled all of ours and GROSS! Think I'll wear gloves next time :)

We hand roll every few weeks & then take it to the bank to deposit into our "change" account. :D

We have a "silver" jar. We put dimes, nickels, and quarters in it for our WDW habit. OK so this is only our second trip, but I can tell it's going to be a habit.

We've been saving for about 2.5 months. I have thrown in a few dollars as well. We have about $70 in our till. The kids even contribute. They rummage my purse, the couch, the car for any spare change to put in the Disney fund.

It's been fun for the whole family. We are also having a garage sale in a few weeks. I told the kiddos that whatever they sell that belongs to them can go into their own WDW accounts. I've had to watch what they put in the garage sale stash...they'll get rid of everything that's not nailed down!:earboy2:

My family has just started doing the change jar for our trip in 2007. DH's cousin "smuggled" a big empty water cooler jug out of work for us to put it in, very nice of him to do. All the place was going to do was throw it away. But they hate to give their employees anything, even if it is going to be thrown out.

Anyways, like someone posted about putting all change in and covering the "silver" with pennies is what I do. DH has a bad habit of going for the silver and using it at work. DS is really into saving change. He's 8 and couldn't believe how much we have already. He is also checking in the parking lots when we go somewhere for pennies or anything else. LOL!!!

I also have a question for those of you that roll your own change. Do any of you own this machine? Here is a link to it......

If anyone does, do you like it? Do the batteries last for awhile or are you always replacing them? I am trying to find something that my son can use. I figured he could count the change before putting it in the machine and then since it has a counter he can watch the machine count the change and see if he is right.

I prefer to wrap my own. I have looked at some of those machines but decided not to waste my savings! Annmarie

We have always tried to save change, but while I was in college we often dipped into it. Recently I bought hubby two vending machines to put at work. When he empties it I get change and he gets bills. We counted last month and had over $500. Yeah! I think this will be my Victoria & Albert money for our anniversary.:bounce:
