Hello my fellow Budgeteers!!

I am planning on having a great big yard sale soon (yup, to support my Disney habit). My question is, how much do you think I could list these items for:

portable DVD player- needs to get repaired- doesn't work but is fixable- Do i bother?

Books- hard cover, kids, paperback, old/vintage

VHS movies- Disney of course but many others- no covers-

Shoes- new pairs and used pairs

Old records- most are String/instrument music. Most have covers, look in great shape

I don't want to overprice things but I don't want to under price either! Looking for some ideas/thoughts!

Thanks so much!
Lisa

For books I always price .50 softcover and $1.00 hardcover and they always sell. I doubt a DVD player would sell broken, but for a couple $ someone may get it and try to fix it. I had an old (OLD) gas grill out during my garage sale for large item pick up and a guy offered me $5.00! As far as vintage books I wouldn't have a clue or records. I sold DD's shoes for .50-3.00 (some were new with tags) none of my shoes (all new) sold.

I literally couldn't give away books at our last garage sale... they were popular ones too. Maybe that was the problem... everybody already read 'em.

I didn't have much luck with books or videos at my last garage sale. I usually price books at .50 each or 3 for a dollar. Sometimes that helps if someone gets one free.

I was surprised to sell several pairs of shoes - 1 new & 1 used. I think I sold the new one for $1 & the other for .50.

My motto is to sell cheap and get rid of the stuff.

The reason a DVD player wouldn't sell is it would probably cost almost as much to buy a new one to repair it unless someone can do it themselves. VHS movies used to sell well. I'm not sure about now since almost everyone has DVD players and VHS players are harder to find. Records might sell if you advertise them ahead of time and a collector sees them. The easiest things to sell are child related. Clothing, baby furniture, strollers, car seats, toys, etc. The shoes I sold easily were snowboots and soccer cleats. Household items seem to be harder unless it's furniture. All you can do is put it all out and take whatever you get.

We do a yard sale every year - You never know what people will buy. I have sold shoes in the past depending on the shape they were in I would sell them for $1 - $5. We have sold books for .50 each unless it is a good hardcover. We do our yard sale 2 days, so the 2nd. day the books get marked down to .25 each. I have sold broken items in the past, I always tell them that it doesn't work and mark it for so little money. People always seem to buy these items. We just did a yard sale and I didn't sell any Little People toys, I can't figure out why, I had all the pieces and some of them were almost new and I had them priced pretty low I think. $3.00 - $7.00. The stuff I think won't sell, people buy.

Good Luck with your sale!

I didn't have much luck with books at my last sale and they were priced .50 I priced my shoes a 1.00 a pair , most being in like new condition.....leather and good quality...i sold a couple pairs, but the day we had our sale it was like 90+ outside....we didn't do too bad with the heat. :sunny: good luck....

Thank you for everyone's responses!

I haven't decided what weekend to do it- do you think it is better in the summer or does it matter if it is the second weekend of September??? If I do it in the summer, it will be the second weekend of August...I should be able to prepare...I haven't hit the basement yet ( send help if I never post again!! ) I will advertise in the local paper since I will have records, music items, etc...

All the $$$ is going towards our hopeful "Cheer Us Up Trip" to see the Mouse!! :cool1: I would love any more tips you wonderful people have to share!!!

We had a multi family yard sale in June and did great. Sold movies, a lot of kids clothes and tons of toys. Next year I plan on hitting up the local Wal-Mart for their throw away hangers and hanging the clothes on a clothesline (makes them easier to look at). The best advice I received was to have the yard sale is around the 1st of the month, and use lots of big signs. We wrote on the signs some of the more unusual items just to bring in the customers... one friend had Wilton Cake pans and we had people lined up 30 minutes early to get to them!! Oh, put anything big (bookshelves, furniture..) toward the back of the sale, people have to walk and look to get to them.. GOOD LUCK!!

Do you EBAY? My hubby has posted brokenvideo players, dvd players, and computer modems and have sold them there. THere are students from electronics schools always looking to snap up a broken unit fora few dollars. Hubby's items have always sold for a good price considering he was going to through it in the garbage. Hope that helps!

We normally do our yards sales in the Spring or Fall. In the summer I think alot of people go away on the weekends. One year it was raining almost every weekend, the weekend we had our sale we did really well, I think people just wanted to finally get out of the house.
