XXI Olympic Winter Olympics Games Thread

I couldn't believe how high Shaun got on his first run.

Did you see when they superimposed that first part of his run with one of the other boarders?
White went at least 5 or 6 feet higher than the other guy.

I noticed that he was one of the only competitors who started his run right from the top. Almost all of the other guys slid down sideways at least 10 or 20 feet before pointing their boards downhill and starting. So it's no wonder that he's getting way more speed and way more air. I guess the other guys just aren't good enough to handle that much speed.

I was astounded at how much of a skill gap there is between him and everyone else.

Oh, and did anyone catch the uncensored language?
I found it kind of funny to hear that live on NBC.

I know I find this amazing. What a great moment for him.

Wow, what a run! Doesn't look like that shin played a factor! Gold medal is the best medicine for that shin!

Actually, they showed her coming in on her left ski only, totally favoring her right. The course was very bumpy, which was the worst thing for her shin injury. What a testament to a true champion, to be able to ski like that in bad pain!

His "free" victory run was awesome!!!!!!
:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

His skills are in a completely different league than anyone else. He is amazing, and so much fun to watch!

I wonder if they are going to use a 10 second delay after THAT little "ooops". I'm sure the FCC is on the case . . .

My DD was OVER THE MOON when she found out that the snow boarders were wearing Burton. Her jacket and snow pants are from Burton and as a parent they get two thumbs up :thumbsup2:thumbsup2. They are warm and waterproof and the pants link into the snow skirt of the jacket to keep the snow from getting into the pants. It's too bad she spends so much time swimming because I think she would really enjoy snow boarding.

No, when was that?

See, neither DH or I heard the oops, but we did hear the announcers mention it. While they were filming at the top of the hill, just as it became clear White wasn't going to have to beat his 1st run score, him and the 3 coaches were up there cutting up, having a good time, someone said something - I have no clue what it was. The only part we really caught was White asking what he should do on the 2nd run. He, laughingly, suggested just riding down thru the middle.

A few good natured four letter words were uttered. Can't say I blame them. How excited they all must've been. I didn't hear the F-bomb, but I heard a "poo" reference. They actually realized what they said with the camera right there and looked sheepish...but hey...I think we can forgive them!

Hey guys...for US residents...

I was planning on loading up the Canada curling match on NBColympics.com, only Canada tv changed what was being covered by which channel. They bumped the curling off of CTV, but the link on NBC is still to CTV...which means I'm watching the downhill portion of the women's combined LIVE...

They are on skier #11 right now, Lindsey Vonn is going #18.

So if you want to watch live skiing...run over to nbcolympics.com and load up the Canada curling match.

Darn...right in the middle of Lindsey's run, they figured it out! No more coverage.

After they said he should do his new trick (Double McTwist or something?), one of his coaches said:
"Make sure you stomp the <blank> out of it".

Nothing a 14 yr old hasn't heard thousands of times in the hallways of their high school. It's just weird to hear it on a network tv station.

LOVED it when the coaches were telling Shaun "Go out there and do whatever you want to do!", and he askes, "Can I just go down the middle?"

"NO!!!" :rotfl:

Loved watching Shaun last night!
my dd reminded me that she has been asking for a snowboard! I think I am going to take her over to the mountain next week, we live at the foot of a ski area, no excuse not to go :)

Ok, now I know why we missed it, it came after the down the middle comment and since we were laughing at that, we didn't hear the rest. And according to the Yahoo Sports, I don't think it would have shocked either of us to hear the conversation. When you start putting cameras into every personal conversation/celebration that goes on at live events, and I enclude the personal moment with Vonn and her DH into this mix, then those are the chances you take on catching a word or two that some may find offensive and others won't. While the moment between Vonn and her DH was very touching, I would have been just as happy to just see their celebration, but not hear a majority of what should have been shared just between them.

I felt the same way. I was yelling "leave 'em alone!" at the TV...

Yep, great gold and silver competition.

With regard to the sources that called Weir's laced shirt a corset, who cares? Call it what you will, cite what you please, it doesn't change it. Inspired by? Could be, but it could as easily be inspired by a lace up vest.

The point that is refusing to be acknowledged is that it's ridiculous to attribute his costume to looking like a girl, and then expect that comment to not be a derogatory reference to women in general. All because it was trimmed in pink? :sad2: Calling someone on that sort of genralization is not a backhanded insult. It's a direct challenge to a ridiculous statment. Whatevah... :snooty:

So, on to snowboarding, and speed skating... looking forward to more exciting games. ::yes::

The point is, I don't think the "girl" comment was meant to be derogatory to women, at least i didn't see it that way. Everyone's interpretation is their own, but IMO, his outfit did look like a girls because of the corset-like hot pink lacing and the hot pink tassels and the sleeves. His mannerisms didn't help with the overall feminine illusion. princess:

Exactly, I have seen plenty of woman who IMHO look great in a pink corset.
Men, not so much.

Agreed.
If he was wearing a bra and panties, we could say he "looked like a woman" and that wouldn't be derogatory towards women in any way.

It's rather mean of NBC to broadcast the snowboarder singing (very badly -lol!) to her ipod. Kind of invasive, I think.
