XXI Olympic Winter Olympics Games Thread

Johnny Weir is unapologetically a wild child. Interesting fact; he designs his own skate outfits. I thought he was dressed like a girl tonight though. I still like him. He makes me smile.

I think the judging is inconsistent since nobody seems to understand how it works. Last night, even the winning Chinese pairs team had to wait until the announcer said "FIRST place" before they celebrated. I honestly don't think the knew they won!

MANY sports are subjective. My sport, for example. Horse back riding, specifically hunters and equitation. It's just something we live with. I'm okay with subjective, but not okay with holding grudges and playing favorites.

I hate the sleazy judging in skating:mad:

So did the Canadians in the 2002 SLC Winter Games! Jamie Sale and David Pelletier of Canada legitimately won the Pairs figure skating Gold medal. However, a bribed female Russian judge padded the score in favor of the Russian pair. It was investigated, the judge was booted, and Sale and Pelletier had to share the Gold with the Russian pair, when it should have been theirs alone. Now, that's some sleazy judging! BTW - Jamie and David are doing the figure skating commentaries on Canadian TV.

I believe that was a big part of the change to the scoring system.

Yep. Certainly more closely monitored! Which may be why the last 12 Olympics (some 48 years) chain of Russian pairs Gold medal winners has finally been broken!! I remember back in the 60s when individual skaters had to do "school figures" just to qualify! Peggy Fleming remains the all-time best at school figures! (Skating a figure 8 on one blade, and then re-tracing it on one blade). Plus some geometric shapes.

Just got home from class to see the final result of the CAN/NOR game. Now that's what I wanted to see!!!

my dd is a competitve figure skater who trains at a high level facility on the east coast actually two of her coaches are former olympians this summer Patrick Chan trained where she does for a few weeks he was just the nicest skaters she very met and so very talented still till this day and as a skating parent the 'system' still baffles me

I enjoyed the men's skating last night. I also don't understand this judging system. The numbers are a big mumbo jumbo to me.

Dressed like a girl???? Wow.

Weir is a performer through and through, from the outfits, to the music to the talent. Not understanding that isn't really an excuse to levy backhanded insults.

The guy had on a pink corset with pink feathers hanging off of it. Dressed like a girl? Yeah, I think so.
Insult? Somehow I think he would not take it as one.

Why is that immediately feminine? And it wasn't a corset. It was a costume that featured laces. Just because something has laces does not make it a corset.

You can justify your comments in any way you please. It doesn't make them more palatable to those who disagree.

No matter. It's is only a DIS thread after all.

Discriminatory comments run rampant.

Carry on.

LA Times called it a corset....

Reporting from Spokane, Wash. — Johnny Weir always has been comfortable in his skin, especially if it is an oilskin corset with a pink shoulder tassel, a pink stripe down an arm and pink laces across the chest like the one he wore for Friday's short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Those discriminators!

As does MSN.....

VANCOUVER - There were black corsets and pink tassels, feathers and sequins and plunging necklines. And that was on the men.

How dare they?

As did USA Today....

Update, 11:05 p.m. ET: The USA's Johnny Weir was solid, if unspectacular ... except for the pink corset.

You can say you think that a man dressed in a pink corset costume is not immediately feminine...but I doubt you will find many people who agree with you.

I agree that the outfit was feminine..but let's be honest. The comment "dressed like a girl" is meant to be degrading.

Fine, dressed like woman or a burlesque dancer. Is that better?

The real question is why is being "dressed like a girl" an insult? Is it, as Madonna says because "being a girl is degrading"?

I realize this is a minor discussion over a skating costume-but the casual phrases we use carry larger meaning. It's like the phrases "that's so retarded" or "that's so gay".

I find it a statement of fact. He was dressed like a girl.princess:
Not in the same ballpark as 'retarded' or 'gay'

But it's okay for you to levy backhanded insults at me? gotcha.

I LOVE Johnny Weir. I think his skating is breathtaking, and his personality is awesome. I always look forward to seeing what he's wearing, because he always chooses outfits that get people talking. Last night, he performed phenomenally...but his outfit looked like something one of the ladies would ear. Maybe it was the corset....maybe it was the feathers....maybe it was the hot pink? Who knows.

But he did "rock the tassle" last night!

Today is Shaun White on the halfpipe! I am really excited to see him do his new maneuver. He's got the best hair too!

Well, I thought Johnny Weir's outfit looked like a corset as well. This is the first time I've ever seen him skate, or even heard of him, to be honest. I found his costume to be edgy and pushing the envelope but not so much that it distracted from his very considerable talent. I like it when they shake things up a little, otherwise it gets stuffy and routine.
