XXI Olympic Winter Olympics Games Thread

Joining the excitement :) we are also going and leave on Saturday :) our flight leaves at 7:00am bit early considering the fact the airports a hour away from our house and the opening ceremonies end at 12 the night before and that we must be there 2 hours before but it's for the olympics a once in a life time exprience our first event is on sunday the alpine skiing final hopefully Lindsay Vohn is ok and won't have to withdraw ...

Tonight is the night! We have the news on right now and I love hearing that Olympic theme song. :goodvibes

As disneydance wrote, "the olympics a once in a life time event". I was in Seoul in 1988 as part of the US military security force. I was on the USS Midway, part of 2 aircraft carrier battle groups just in case North Korea tried to get cute (PRK boycotted those games). We pulled into Pusan for 3 days and boarded our bus to Seoul (many of my shipmates went to Seoul). I was there the day after Ben Johnson got stripped of his gold medal in the 100m because of doping. I was in Olympic Stadium and saw Carl Lewis, Evelyn Ashford and FloJo. The first day of the decathlon was starting and Sergi Bubka from the USSR won the pole vault. When we got back on the bus back to Pusan, the USA men's basketball team lost to the USSR. The next day in Pusan, we see the USSR sailing team, no doubt that the KGB was nearby. It was something I will never forget.

With these games, Canada has a lot going, including winning the gold medal for hockey. The ad's I have seeing on TSN and Sportnet promoting the games has been good. I am sure that these games will be the best winter games since Lillehamer in 1994.

The olympic television bids for the US will begin after the games. I am fearful that Fox will get the nod. Joe Buck as prime time host with digger the gopher as it's mascot, with all the Fox graphics. ABC/ESPN may win the bid, as far as NBC, just look at the Jay Leno soap opera.

Enjoy the next 17 days.

They are televising the torch relay through Vancouver and I have a question. Why in heaven's name is Arnold Schwarzenegger carrying the torch!!!! I don't get it.

They gave the reason as I was typing. They said it was because he is involved in a lot of Green initiatives in BC. It sounds lame to me.

Would Americans allow politicians from other nations to run the torch relay in their country? Just wondering what everybody else thinks about this? Am I out to lunch?

Matt Lauer ran a leg too. I think it's great that they allow folks from other countries to run a leg of the relay in the host country.

I was watching the Today Show this morning and they had the Olympic music on and I got all weepy!

What's wrong with Joe Buck, out of curiosity?

Joe has won emmy awards, but I just don't like his calls on the Fox Baseball Telecast.

OK, I was just curious since he's one of the most respected broadcasters in the business (and doesn't just call baseball games). And he's a hometown boy so I had to stick up for him. ;)

It was just announced that Peter Forsberg is carrying the flag in for Sweden. Mmm, Peter Forsberg....

I agree, he is one of the best around right now. I also prefer the commentators that fox sports has over the other big three. I have no desire to ever listen to Bryant Gumbel or Chris Collinsworth ever again.

I don't have a problem with Arnold running with it AT ALL. BC has had really good relations with him based on the green initiatives we've been working on in the last few years. Besides he was an incredible athlete and really has accomplished a lot based on hard work. :thumbsup2 It's not like it's been all celebrities by any stretch of the imagination. I've been watching it for the last hour and it's been all regular people :)

Oh I realize that, it just struck me as odd that an American would be running inthe torch relay. I hadn't heard that others have as well. I guess I've just never heard of non-nationals participating like that. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention in previous Olympics.

Ah yes the invention of the horrible shoot rule rule. THE stupidest rule in hockey.

Agreed, as far as the NHL is concerned.

I'm just hoping for great hockey, perhaps along the lines of that found during the Salt Lake Olympics (with a slightly different outcome in the gold medal game, of course. :) )

Agree with all but that last part, of course. :goodvibes

Truth be told, I was so happy to see Al MacInnis win gold that that took a whole lot of the sting out of the US losing that game. :thumbsup2
