XXI Olympic Winter Olympics Games Thread

Oh NO! Alpine Skier Lindsey Vonn is injured! She told Matt Lauer this morning that she has a deep tissue bruise on her ankle. I will admite, part of me is wondering if it might be a little subterfuge? Maybe she was feeling all the intense pressure of being this Olympic's "It" girl and wanted to have something in her back pocket so she could have a reason if she didn't do stellar?

Maybe she remembers Bodie Miller. :lmao:

Mmmm, Bode Miller. Yay, I just came up with yet another reason (as if I needed more) to be excited about the Olympics! :lovestruc:laughing:

Wayne Gretzky to light the cauldron at B.C. Place?

>>At this writing, 48 hours before the Olympic Opening Ceremony, it seems certain The Great One will light the cauldron on Friday night.<<

I really hope it's Betty Fox - maybe Gretzky can hand it to her? I can't explain it but he thought of Terry Fox's mother lighting it puts chills up my spine.

It seems like a lot of sources are saying they think it will be Gretzky. I have to admit, I am hoping that the Gretzky rumour was leaked on purpose so it is more of a surprise when he passes the flame to Betty Fox. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part.

To me Wayne Gretzky is an athlete first, a hero second.
Terry Fox is a hero first, and athlete second.

I read (on the internet, so it must be true :rotfl2: ) that it has to be an Olympic athlete who lights the cauldron, according to IOC rules from 1996. I can't find that spelled out anywhere.

Does anyone know what the rules are and where I could find them?

M.

Personally I think both would be good choices but I don't think it matters all that much. I don't watch the Olympics to see who lights the torch.

Anybody know anything about the Paralympic games? Do they run concurrent with the Olympics? It's says they also start tomorrow and that their opening ceremonies are tomorrow.

The Paralympics start next month. I think they use a lot of the same facilities.

I just got back from my DD9's school. They are running their own Olympics and the opening ceremony was today, as tomorrow is a pd day. My husband was a torchbearer and he lent them his torch to use. Then all the kids sang "Believe". It was so moving - I bawled!

I'm a sucker for all the symbolism and pageantry :-)

THANKS! I read the website wrong and thought I was looking at the schedule for the Paralympic games but it was the vancouver2010 site.

A note of interest, I am in the running to coach the US Special Olympic equestrian team at the 2011 World Summer Games in Athens, Greece! I coached the team in 2007 in Shanghai. Let me just tell you...the pageantry was mindblowing.
