I put xmas garland on the railing from my upstairs to the downstairs. Now when I want to take it off, it's all stuck on the polished railing. How do I get it off and clean?

Sorry I wanted to put, Goo gone, why it did go through I do not know what I did wrong, Just put it on a rag and rub then wipe with a dry rag, it's very oily. I wipe my wood down with a damp rag after I get up all the sticky up
