I found this write-up about Vero in the Foghorn Outdoor book "Florida Beaches" (1999). Wabasso Beach is the public beach next door to Disney's Vero Resort. Here is the quote:
Wabasso Beach Park is another awesome county run coastal playground. It lies 6 miles north of Vero Beach, east of the mainland town of Wabasso and south of the tiny community of Orchid. Wabasso is a little stretch of sandy paradise as nice as any along Floridas east coast. A steep set of stairs leads down to a wide, kid-filled beach. Weve seen boogey boards and divers out in force on hot summer days, while more quiescent souls placidly repose in the shade of covered picnic areas and stare down on the action. Wabasso is a quintessential Florida beach park and gets a 5-star, thumbs up from us.
We were urged by several proudly possessive locals not to tell the whole world about the world-class beach at Wabasso, but the cat or should we say mouse? is already out of the bag. That is to say, the park abuts Disneys Vero Beach Resort at its south end. Disneys foray into the beach market was the result of a three-and-a-half year search across Florida for the perfect location. (Incidentally, its not really in Vero Beach but six miles north of it.) The fact that Disney chose this locale attests to Wabassos beauty. At Disneys Vero Beach Resort, which is a vacation ownership resort where rooms also are rented out as at a normal hotel, youll pay upward of $150 a night to enjoy the beach. At Wabasso Beach Park, you pay nothing to enjoy the same beach. Your call!
They also recommend the Ocean Grill, Riverside Café, Chez Yannick, Captain Hirams and Montes as restaurants. Montes is cited as being an Italian restaurant popular with Tommy Lasorda.
I thought this was an interesting description that others might enjoy reading.
