Wonder if anyone here can confirm this? I was reading on another board not from a Disney site; that DL now charges 3$ to add your name to the ear hats.
Small charges here and there, wonder what else will be "nickle and dimed" if this is true :confused3 a glass of water ? I need to stop reading all these boards for a bit. I am becoming unhappy with Disney and I don't like it.

when i went 2 years ago if i remember right they were charging to put ur names on!!!!! i didnt buy one so i cant be sure, but i remember right that was one thing that helped the choice not to buy one!!!

I was there late June we bought 5 earhats, and you could still get "basic" script writing on your ears free. They started charging for fancy fonts awhile back. But good ole disney script was always free. :)

I am probably in the minority here but it doesn't bother me. As long as it is less than 5 dollars. I have noticed the price on ears has gone up and it is kind of sad but in this day and age everything is getting more spendy. It won't affect me, I'll still buy my son yet another pair of ears because he loves them so much. His happiness is worth an extra three bucks to me :-)

My son got his name on his ears for free this week. We were at the hat shop on the way to Critter Country - sorry, I don't know the name of it!

I totally agree with you,,,you go to Disneyland to have fun and of course spend money,,,If we want something we buy it regardless of cost,,,thats why we work hard all year to have money to spend on vacation.....Three dollars is nothing...

I work hard all year and still will not spend 3.00 for writing on a hat. some people can afford such things other can not. For me, yeah I think its appalling to have to fork over 3.00 to write a name on a hat that takes only a few minutes.
have you heard the song I work for the money :lmao: heck yeah and Im not forking over 3.00 for some thread !

We just got back from a visit and were surprised that they're charging $7 for the custom embroidery on hats. Our recollection is that this was free with the more expensive hats. I'm not talking about the basic manual embroidering done on the ear hats, but the custom stuff with selectable fonts and done by a computerized machine. I'll report back later after I go back to pick it up.

Update: this was a miscommunication between DW and a newbie CM, who said there was a "new policy starting today" without seeing the hat DW had bought. Turns out the hat was not suitable for the basic embroidery so it required the custom embroidery which was $7 even before today. One mystery solved, sort of.

It would never occur to me that they would do it for free. Personalization on everything else, everywhere else costs extra, why would you expect Disney to be any different?

I honestly don't have a problem with this. Disney needs to make their money some way too, and having to start charging for a service makes sense to me...and $3 seems to be a fairly resonable price to me.

$3 is going to make a difference? I'm amazed it was ever free. It's a personalized service, why wouldn't you have to pay extra for it?

So it sounds like the standard name embroidering that has been offered for years is still free, but there are specialty fonts that can be requested for an additional fee? Is that correct?

No, the basic embroidery that has always been free, going back to when Walt walked the part, now costs $3. So much for that warm fuzzy feeling.

Hey, at least DL still has a free marching band, unlike WDW, which canned theirs in Y2K. (Knock on wood.)

Someone posted that they got their ears personalized for free just this last week. I think the $3 thing is just a rumor of things to come at this point. Either way $3 is cheap for personalization.

I agree. And if 3 dollars makes or breaks that sale then maybe one shouldn't be buying souvenirs and should save that money. I also agree with pp's that say its a service and a darn neat one and I'm surprised they did it for free for such a long time. That was nice of them but reality has caught up to it now. I can't wait to see the neat fonts in 2 weeks. :)

im getting tired of hearing people here complain about rising costs of various things at DL. first off, anything, anywhere that you have personalized, there is a fee! but not just that, the ENTIRE economy is down, true, some of these companies still arent really loosing money and are rich as gold, but you can bet if the economy is down, and food, gas, necessities, ect. goes up, then so will EVERY SINGLE thing else! how can people sit here and complain!? why should we expect disney to be the ONLY company out there NOT raising prices within this economy? seriously. its vacation anyways. how often do you go? complain about the grocery cost or something else that SHOULD be complained about. i dont like rising costs either, but there is no reason to bash disney. they are doing what everyone else does in this situation. oh and just to add, what about things that are completely free?? here is a GREAT example, how about fast pass? i think many of you are taking disney for granted. go anywhere else and see how much a fast pass type item is. we went to six flags, and for just the two of us, the "flash" pass was 100 bucks. its almost 200 for 4 people! so seriously, please stop complaining, or dont go there!

3$ doesn't break it for me, but I started this thread because it is relevant to other price hikes around the park. Albeit 3 little dollars.

Shouldn't this be considered news for trip planning/budgeting? Gee I would like to know since I am anal when it comes to both. I don't think it's complaining, yes it's a fact that every little thing is going up in this economy. But wow it sure was a service that has been around since Walt himself.

It's just news people seriously.. Lighten up :confused3

As far as I know, basic embroidery is still free when you purchase a hat, at least it was last I bought a hat and when some one in this thread purchased a hat. Sometimes if you purchase a hat and try to come back and want your name on it, but do not have a receipt they will charge you $3.

This might be because of Ebay hats and the wherehouses, it might be another reason, I just know it happened to my friend and have seen it happen before ( I also had a CM not charge my sister who lost her receipt so you don't always get charged) . If when I take the Baby hat I bought at a wherehouse sale (it's an official Disney ears hat), I will expect to pay the $3 because I didn't buy it from Disney, since I want the classic Disney design and will pay for the service.

Otherwise, yes with any custom design you will pay more, with the new machines and the time it can take to input the information and the back up it can cause in a busy shop on a busy day, no wonder they charge more. I did not see any version of hat that came with a free upgrade to the writing, last I looked.

Overall I think it is still a rumor, hopefully some one can triple check for us.

We bought our ears this past Tues, July 28th. The basic embroidery was free. I've never bought ears in all my DLR trips, so I expected to pay for it. I saw the $7.00 sign and thought that is what it cost, lol. Then the CM informed me that was just for custom fonts and colors, that I had free choices. Yippee!! The girls wanted gold anyway. My 7 yo was even surprised it was free, she exclaimed, "I can't believe gold thread is free, it's so fancy". Smart move DLR- calling it gold instead of yellow.
