WOW - I just sold my old gold........

Has anyone ever gone to the gold selling events they have at the local hotels? There was an ad in the paper yesterday for one this Sat, Sun and Mon....Do you think it would be worth the trip over? I don't have much...Maybe 1 or 2 bracelets (10k and 14k) and maybe a chain or 2....Would I even get $50, do you think?

Some one on here posted an article about he gold companies that come into town. I here they are a bit of scammers. A news station did a piece on them, and they are like pawn shops, they will give you less than mailing it off.

I sent a bunch of gold (old wedding band, tennis braclet, ankle bracelet, etc.) to a place in Philadelphia over a month ago. When I got my check, I was less than impressed, $87.00. Today, I took a gold chain, link bracelet and a childs bracelet with tiny, tiny diamonds, all 14k gold, to a local jeweler/pawn shop and walked out of there with $160.00!!!! I will never again not sell anything in person, period.

When I finally gathered up all of my gold, I went to one of the hotel things just for kicks, knowing I would be sending it in to USGB. They offered me $700 for 125 pennyweight. Luckily, cause of this thread I knew my prices and told them I was expecting more and they upped it to $1000. When I priced it on USGB it would've been about $2200-$2400. I am so glad I knew about. I was able to find some more stuff to send in to USGB and got a wonderful settlement of over $4000.

I have two questions:

1. I have a HS class ring. DoIhave to take the stone out of it.

2. Do they take what I call tri-color gold? I got this years ago and it says
14K and Italy on it. Is this real gold?

Thanks!

I too want to know about the stone thing. Also How do you know how gold something is? I have a ton of unlabled but gold colored jewerly?

What a great topic. I have actually thought about this for some time now, but never went. A local jeweler advertises this every so often. So I thought I would go check it out.
I have only read a samll portion of the thread, but wanted to ask this, since so far, I haven't found the answer, and see itasked several times.
I have some rings and a diamond tneeis bracelet. Do they buy the stones? Or do they pluck them out and give them back? I really don't wnat the stones, so if they bought them ,that would be great. Or do we have to take the stones out ourselves? I would have no clue how to even go about that.

I am so mad too, becuase about 4 years ago we moved and I threw out all my old jewelry I never wore. I know there were at least to ID bracelets. UGH!
Also, how do you know if it is gold or costume? I have some gold peices my aunt gave me, and some costume. I know at one time she told me one was worth $500 (at least I think she bought it for that) but needed a clasp fixed. I never did, and I honestly can't remember which peice it is any more, as I have two that look alike, and another with a broken clasp too that I don't know where I got it. LOL!
So will I look like a fool bring this stuff in, and it being costume? LOL! I also have some Monet stuff. I beleive that is costume, but can someone tell me for sure. I have earings that are not marked in anyway that I can see. Any way to tell or just take it in and hope.

I think I'll keep my eyes open at garage sales now. I never look at jewelry when I do go. I haven't been out yet this year, but maybe I'll venture out tomorrow. LOL!

Thats my problem too. I was wondering how you tell weather there real or not. I have a ton of golden peices that I have no clue weather there real or not

Sent an old ring to USGB today....ill let you know what happens!

I called before I sent my gold in and asked this question and I was told by USGB that you need to take the stone out only if you want to keep it. If you don't want it, you don't have to take it out. If you send it to USGB with it in there, they will not send it back to you.

If it says 14 karat, then it is gold and they take all types of gold, white, yellow, etc.

You can tell it is gold if it says 14kt or 10 kt on it somewhere, very tiny stamp on the inside of rings, or on the clasp of bracelets. Some times you will see, 14kt plated or filled, these items are not worth anything to USGB, I don't know about anywhere else.

Most of the people on this thread send there gold into Us goldbuyers or Goldfellow. They pay much higher than local jewelers most of the time.

Okay, I have been trying to skim these pages and I think I'm going to try it! Is it a hassle to do? I have very few things that are gold, some things that I'm not sure of, and lots of silver. Should I turn it in anyway? What if it is all crap and I don't get anything for it? Do I then owe them any money?

I may look into them. But my one question, the main one is what about the stones? Do they pay you for them, since I read they don't send them back?

No, you don't get anything extra for the stones unless you work that out with them ahead of time. If they are really valuable and you want them, I'd suggest you take them out before sending in your pieces.

No you won't owe them anything if there is no payout. It is no hassle, you call USGB and then you just call fedex and they come and get the package. USGB will call you the next day.

You would still need to take the stones out of the gold. others have posted that Goldfellow has a number you can call to talk about stones as well as USGB, but the gold department is separate, so you would still need to remove them.

Actually they once told me they would charge me 12.00 to return my items. I had some things that they offered a pay out on and some they didnt. They asked if I wanted those items returned and told me they would deduct 12.00 from my payout or I could just donate them to the Salvation Army.

There is no charge from Goldfellow to return items. I sent stuff to them for myself and our moms and it was hassle free and very fast. Whatever was not real they sent back in the mail. They also take silver there - including silverware and items of that nature. The customer service at GF was great too. Very friendly and fast responding.

I went and sold my old gold about 1.5 weeks ago. I had no idea of the value, so from this thread I just guestimated.
I had a couple very thin serpentine bracelets, and 2 old ankle bracelets with chains (broken, and from bf's I barely remember..lol). 3 small rings, one had an onyx in it, a charm holder on a necklace with some small charms on it (I kept a couple of cute charms for dd). All of these things were extremely light... then I had one flat bracelet that had some weight to it, and one larger ring that I would say was smaller than a HS ring, but bigger than a normal man's band ring. It had a large cracked piece of jade in it.
I was offered $930 for my gold, which I took.
I didn't expect that much at all!
I also had a bracelet that I decided not to sell. He had offered me $450 for it.

After reading some gold ads I regretted not checking around. I figured that I got more than I thought I would so that was good, but it still bothered me since it's so unlike me not to be sure I was getting the best deal. I didn't even know what my jewerely weighed!

I got that bracelet weighed today (the one that I decided not to sell) and it's 25.02 pennyweights, so it seems he was paying about $18 a pennyweight. If that's what I got for the rest of it, then I'm very happy. I'm glad I weighed the bracelet and got an idea of what he paid me. It was a jewerly store, and after the fact a co-worker did say that she knew him and he's a fair person. But weighing the bracelet and knowing the price I got for the other stuff really makes me feel better. I would have been happy getting $16 or $17 per pennyweight.

Anyway.. I wound up with an extra $930 for Disney!! Yay! I guess we will do the dp for the last week we're on property :)

is it only jewelery they will buy? just curious about the silver aspect. i have lots of silver plates, and tableware type stuff.

Goldfellow will take silver items. My mom sent 8 place settings of silverware to them and got a payout. You can always call GF to see if they'll take other table items, or email. Theyre very helpful over there.

:flower3: My experience was that the sterling silver was not worth sending. You can make a lot more money with that on Ebay. Check both sites (silver buyers and ebay) before selling. Good luck $$$$ :wave2:
