WOW - I just sold my old gold........

1 ounce = 28.3495231 grams

2.4oz = 68.03 grams x $5/gram??? (according to where you go I guess),
could be $340??

Hope that helps!

I got my goldfellow envelope in the mail today, it'll go out tomorrow. Of course the price of gold dropped again today!

So using that calculation if a ring is .4 ounces of 14kt gold then what can we expect to get?

I remember the gentleman from the gold fellow website saying he quoted the days price amount on his site. As of today he has it listed at
$969.25 per troy ounce. Hope that helps, I do not know what it was yesterday.

Do you know how much it went down?

Looks like it ended up closing even by the end of the day.

I've been calculating by pennyweight... 1 oz equals 20 pennyweight; so I think .4 = 8 dwt. I think, based on today's prices, this would be worth about $195??

I've been following this thread and doing my own research. I have a little less than 3 oz of gold -more than half is 14k; a few items are 10k; and the rest is 18k. Today, I went to 2 places: the first place offered me $1220; the second place $800 (although after he realized I knew it was worth more, he offered $1100). I decided to try usgoldbuyers.com. My husband saved an article for me from the Wall Street Journal, and this was the site used by the author. I should get a quote from them tomorrow, so I'll let you know! :)

I FOUND A CONVERSION TABLE!!
http://www.kitco.com/jewelry/dwt-oz-gram.html

Ex: I know I have 18.5 grams of 14K gold. It was weighed per jeweler.
So I type in 18.5. Check off the grams button & click submit.
The answer comes back as:
18.5 grams = 11.8971061093248 DWT = 0.59478875032633 Ounces

I can take that 11.9 DWT (pennyweights) & go to any of the online sites to see how much they are paying per pennyweight for 14K gold.

So.... my local jeweler wanted to pay me $6 per gram for 18.5 grams or $111.
That goldfellow.com site pays $13.76 per DWT (pennyweight) which is 13.76 x 11.90 = $163.75

NOW YOU CAN DO YOUR COMPARISON SELLING TOO!!!!
I'm uploading a photo to show just how little gold I have.

Remember, if you are looking at the .59 ounce answer from the conversion table & thinking you can just multiply .59 times todays gold price....the gold price is for 24K gold. 14K is only 58.3% (??) of 24K...and then you have to subtract all the middlemen cuts out of that. Dealer, refiner..... You might get 60% (per that article metioned much earlier in thread.)
Ex: My .59 ounce x $980/oz (just using a price for todays gold) x .583 (58.3% since I have 14K not 24K) x maybe .60 (60% if I found a generous buyer) = $202.26.

You can see my jeweler was REALLY cheap at $111.

Reposted for those asking questions that were covered earlier in thread. Use the link above. You can weigh it on a postal scale or kitchen scale, or take it to jeweler to be weighed.

BTW, my envelope to goldfellow.com is going out tomorrow. FINGERS CROSSED!

I'm loving this thread! Today I rummaged through my jewelry box and found a few things that I can sell. Four earrings (each has lost their mate), a charm, a ring, and a fairly thick bangle bracelet. I can't wait to find out how much I get for them! I think I'm going to go to a local place that buys gold but also seems to be a jewelry store/pawn shop type of shop. I'll report back tomorrow!

So, first thing this morning I brought all of the above mentioned items, plus another thin gold ring, a thin gold necklace and a little hoop earring. I received just under $300!!! I'm happy with that.:goodvibes

I just got $271 for my old stuff.

An initital ring (remember those from the 80's) two broken rope chains and a hiddeous ring from QVC given to me years ago.

I got $1140.00 for mine yesterday!!

Wow, congrats! You must've had quite a bit, and/or found a really good place to take it to get top dollar!

I've been hunting around for my old stuff...I can't find some that I KNOW I've got somewhere...sigh. :sad2: Anyway, as soon as I've found it all, I'll be off to find out what it's worth too!

Wishing us all luck! :goodvibes

I live in chicago... does anyone know where I can go to sell my gold?

I don't want to do the online ones. I called one place and they said $7 a gram and from what you are all posting that sounds too cheap.

BCV2003, I am in SW PA as well. If you don't mind me asking where you took your loot to?

I don't have much, but something is better than nothing any day. LOL!

THANK YOU OP!!! I had no idea that I had $558 just laying in my junk jewelry drawer!! I would have never thought of selling this old stuff (I did keep the sentimental stuff!)....my husband is out right now at the jewelers and was offered $558 from the first guy he went to!!!

We are working on prepayment for a 2009 cruise!
Once again, I learn something new everyday from the DisBoards!!! Thanks for sharing!

And yes, when I told my husband last night that he had to go "hock" some old stuff, he thought I was crazy!!! But, he's loving me now!

We are in the Chicago suburbs. After getting a few prices for our gold pieces from a few local jewelry stores we decided to check on one we found on craigs list. My husband went on Saturday to Richard Allen Jewelry in Hoffman Estates and came home with a check for 704.00. The first two stores offered us 200.00 and 500.00. If you go on the chicagoland craigs list and type in scrap gold you will get there phone number and address.

This is what they say on there add-- NO GAMES..shop around. We buy from consumers and dealers all over the country.
10K 11.42/gram (figures at $17.71/ dwt pennyweight)
14K 16.00/gram (figures at $24.80/ dwt pennyweight)
18K 20.57/gram (figures at $31.88/ dwt pennyweight)
22K 25.14/gram (figures at $38.97/ dwt pennyweight)

We are very happy with the outcome, I will defiantly go back if I come up with more stuff.
Hope this info helps.

Are you in the city? I went to A-1 Jewelry & Coin on Irving Park Road. I think I was given a fair offer (I decided to send it to a NY place I read about in the Wall Street Journal -I should hear back today) -but the guy knew I had done my research. There was another customer before me, who was given $15 per pennyweight for his 14k stuff -whereas he quoted me $22.50 per pennyweight.

I do live in the city but on the SW side. Irving park is too far. thanks tho.

I just took it to a jewlery store in beverly and they said come back in an hour. I wonder what they will say... I am in dire need of some cash

I felt weird, did anyone else?
