I am as new as they come. I have been a lurker for a couple months and have finnally registered. I am a husband, and father of 5. We are seriously looking into using our 2009 Tax return to buy into the AKL, probably 200 points, anyone have any sugestions to help me along the way? Are there any discounts on the extras? Tickets, Meal plans, anything like that?

You can get a discount on the AP, and their dicounts at some restaurants, but those discounts come and go. Nothing is guaranteed. Don't buy DVC for any of the perks, because they can take them away at anytime. If you want to buy DVC do so because you love Disney and you like to stay at deluxe accommodations on property. We love our DVC and have really enjoyed having it. However, it is the memories that we have created with our children and grandchildren, friends and family that make it so special to us.

I hate to sound like a nerd, but thank you for replying. I'm so stoked that I have made my first post!!! We went last year to Disney for the first time every, my wife, and myself and absolutly loved it!! bu stayed off site :( for $1400 for the week. We are looking to go every other year we had such great time but wanted to stay on site to enjoy the time more, take a break from the park mid-day, or take advantage of the magic hours. We did like the house we rented because we do like to eat as a family, and not fast food all the time so the house gave us the advantage of being able to cook when we wanted.

All villas except for the studios all have kitchen facilities in the villas, so this is something that you may really enjoy.

As mentioned, there are some great perks from DVC, but it can be removed anytime, so I wouldn't rely on them. However, there are currently a few restaurants, etc that offer DVC discounts, ie. Nine Dragons 20% off lunch. But what we found that we really loved is the discount for AP's - about $100 off for new basic AP's and I think about $85 off renewals. Any of these perks can be seen at the member websites. They are updated to show current perks.

Congratulations on your first post! I agree w/ the above posts....buy because you love Disney and you plan on staying at their resorts for years and years to come....not for the perks. DVC villas are awesome because there are full kitchens (1 bed and up) and right there on property. Great locations, great pools, and a great value if used properly.

Good luck!

Welcome to the DIS! BE warned it is very addictive. I also glad to see another man of the family as a poster, there are quite few of us, but we are in the minority. Sounds like your family dynamics will call for a 2 BDR villa which are quite nice. If you liked your first visit, you'll love your first stay onsite. you may want to check into renting points to give a DVC villa a try..

Welcome! My husband and I also purchased 200 points-which easily gives us a week in a 2BR during summer months to go with family-and enough for shorter trips off season alone. We've been to Vero Beach and will visit Hilton Head this September. We gave our daughter a week at the Wilderness Lodge for her honeymoon and visited OKW for a week by ourselves. All with 200 points! We have 150 points banked from this year and will take our daughter and son-in-law for a week next summer at the Beach Club. I think the Animal Kingdom Villas are going to be a wonderful resort. Good luck and have fun planning!

I have to agree. This site is very addictive and I tend to visit several times a day. I love it and all of the people here are what finally convinced my family and I to join! We can't wait for our first visit "home" in December. Have fun researching.

Welcome to the boards!

Sounds like DVC may be a good fit for your family's preferences.
:thumbsup2

:disrocks: Welcome to the boards. You won't find a greater group of people anywhere. If you have any questions, you won't wait long for until someone finds an answer for you.

Hope to Welcome you home to DVC soon...
