Would You Return This?

I bought a pair of athletic pants and a soup mug at Kohl's this weekend. Apprently the cashier wrapped the mug in the pants because when I went to grab the new pants out the bag the mug fell out of the pants and smashed on the floor.

So part of me says, well that's the way the cookie crumbles. The other part says why in the world would you wrap a ceramic mug in a garment instead of wrapping it up by itself. It would be one thing if she told me she wrapped it in the pants, I would have certainly been more careful.

So, what would you do? Bring it back or suck it up?

I would take it back. Just explain to the person what happened. That is not the proper way to pack a breakable item. It was a mistake on the cashier's part and they shouldn't have a problem giving you another mug or store credit for it. Afterall, it is Kohls and they have one of the best return policies ever.

I used to work in a department store.... take it back! Should not have been wrapped in the pants.

I agree with the others. Take it back and get a replacement mug. The cashier never should have wrapped the mug in the pants; it should have been wrapped by itself and placed in a smaller bag and then put into your larger bag with the pants.

While I agree the mug shouldn't have been wrapped up in the pants, I also have always paid attention to what the cashier is doing with my merchandise while bagging and would have seen that the mug was wrapped that way, therefore being more careful when removing the pants from the bag.

But Kohl's does have a very liberal return policy, so go ahead and take it back.

I would return it. I volunteer in a thrift shop and I do occasionally wrap breakables this way, because we don't have a lot of wrapping materials, and I always tell the customer what I've done and warn them to be careful when removing items from the bag. She should have known what could happen.

I would definitely return it, explaining what happened. I am sure that Kohl's will take care of this for you! :)

Ex Kohls employee here and Kohls provides wrapping material. Take it back or even call and let them know what happened so they know to tell the cashier to be more careful. When I worked at POS (Registers) if I would wrap the breakables and then if that person was buying a ton of clothes I would tell them I was wedgin it inbetween the clothes as well for extra protection but notice I TOLD them. She/he really should have told you that is what they did or even asked you if it was ok.
They will happily get you a new one. They want you to be happy with them.

I would take it back, surely they'll exchange it when you tell them what happend.

While I agree that it is best to pay attention to how items are bagged, there will be times that other things going on are big distractions - ex: children trying to grab merchandise within reach, other members of the shopping party getting your attention to let you know they are leaving to go elsewhere, etc... Regardless if this was the case, I find it totally unacceptable for anything breakable to not be wrapped in its own wrapping paper to avoid this from happening. Sounds lazy in my opinion and now you have to be bothered with an unnecessary return. Hope they have your identicle item when you return and no hassles with the process :goodvibes

return it. I notice they always wrap fragiles in the clothes. I almost did that myself a few weeks ago.

I work retail too, and it is not laziness that prompts a cashier to wrap a breakable item in something soft. It is just that clothes are a better cushion that the paper they provide us to wrap stuff in. The cashier was trying to protect the mug for the OP. Not lazy, but trying to be nice.:)

Having said that, the cashier should have told you what they had done. Take the mug back, Kohls will most likely give you a new one without hassle.

I worked as a cashier for many years, I would often wrap breakables and then use the customers softer items for more cushion, things like towels, clothes, blankets, etc etc. BUT I ALWAYS told the customer so they knew to use caution when they got home, I would hand them bag and say "I put your mugs in here with the towels, I used the towels to wrap them so please be careful when you open the bag at home" and they were always grateful. That said I also worked the service desk at this same store, people would bring things back that had broken on the way home or after they got home and yes, we would take them back. :)
There is always the chance that the cashier ran out of wrapping paper but in that instance I used plastic bags until my supervisor made sure I was restocked on paper. :)

FTR I would take it back as well. :)
