Would You Let Your Child Sit Down While Riding An Escalator?

My mother got a pair of underwear stuck in an escalator one time and they had to push the emergency button to stop the escalator. After that we were never allowed to take the escalator, so no my kids would never be allowed to do that.
May I ask how this happened?

I try not to go on escalators or in elevators because I have anxiety...but also when I was in my late teens, my entire thumb nail was ripped off while riding an escalator. I had my hand on the moving rail in an awkward position and it somehow got caught in one of these mirror/decorative grooves as it was going by .....:crazy2::scared: Still feel faint when I think about it (and "late teens" was not recent :rolleyes1). I know it wasn't a foot amputation or anything...

Oh, to answer your question: NO!

They were in a sack and fell out and got stuck between the stairs, it jerked and then someone hit the emergency button to stop it and they had to send someone to get them out. Needless to say they were ruined.

Absolutely not, little fingers could get cut off from those things. Even when the kids were little, we tried to take either the elevator or the regular stairs when there was an option.
DH was on an escalator once at a conference, and a guy pushed past him and knocked DH down. He sliced the palm of his hand open really bad. He really needed stitches but he was presenting in the next class. They never did catch the guy but he knocked several people down as he barreled though.

All of this makes me wonder...has escalator technology and safety technology really improved in the past 30+ years?

I would think there would be safer ways they could be built, or with more sensors to stop when it senses an object in the wrong area, etc.

Many years ago, somebody invented a simple inexpensive insert that can make them much safer, but the manufacturers didn't want to pay the extra cost to add them.

No....I feel down the escalator when I was 9 and to this day still pause and watch my step while getting onto it.

When the kids were little, I'd use the stroller as an excuse not to use the escalator. As the kids got older, they wanted to use the escalator like normal people, and I finally gave in, but there was no fooling around. If I have the option, I'm taking the stairs, same with elevators.

So, no, there is no way I'd let my child sit on the escalator!

Whew!!! I had vision of your Mom with either really big low hanging panties or sitting on the step in her underwear:earseek::earseek:

But that makes more sense :thumbsup2

Only if you don't mind bringing home a big old box of shredded child. In other words, a very, very bad idea.

Why can't they just build speed ramps like at the exit of Space Mountain or Pirates?
