Would You Leave a Dead Deer at the end of Your Driveway?

Yesterday on my way home from town I noticed a dead animal at the end of someone's driveway. At first I thought it must be a dog but as I went by I saw it was actually a deer. :( Right at the edge of their driveway, at the end of it and by the road. I wondered why they wouldn't remove it. It was out in the country, with woods behind their house and a ditch and woods across from their house as well. Now I could see, closer to town where there are no woods there might not be much you could do, but if it was me I would want to put gloves on and pull it out of my driveway and take it back to the woods. I wouldn't want it decaying in my driveway. :(

BTDT, drug that sucker out back. The smell would eventually be horrendous.

Up here, a dead deer on a roadside would be removed by highway maintenance crews. Or maybe it is the responsibility of wildlife management. Not sure. But if it's on a road, it will get cleaned up sooner rather than later.

Maybe they called the county (I'm assuming you're not in a city) and found out that it would be removed if they left it there?

I feed my dogs a raw food diet so if I saw a dead deer at the end of my driveway, after checking it over, it probably wouldn't be outside very long! Not to mention doing a little happy dance and posting pics in the raw feeder group I am in. :)

Yuck. Nothing worse than dead deer laying about. It is sad, but a fact of life around here.

If it was my driveway I would certainly do something with it.

The coyotes took care of mine for me. After a week, nothing left but a few tufts of hair :thumbsup2

I wouldn't touch it. I'd be calling to see what county agency gets rid of them.

This. That is why I pay taxes. There is no way I would take on that gruesome and unpleasant task myself. Yuck.

You can't be serious:confused:

I have a friend in Pennsylvania and this happens to her every few years, dead deer along the road in front of her property . It's illegal for her to touch it. You have to call fish and game, and she says they can take days to come remove it. But she doesn't want to get arrested for poaching so she has to leave it.

Why yes I am!!

If I lived in the country and suddenly a dead deer is at the end if my driveway, you bet! As long as I checked it to make sure it was just hit by a car or something like that. I certainly wouldn't use it if it looked sickly or diseased.

If it was too heavy for me to move myself, then yes it would stay at the end of the driveway.

No such service here. :(

So any animal hit by a car and in the road or at the side of the road, just sits there forever? I'm betting there is a department paid by taxes that deals with the carrion on the roadside and you just aren't aware of it.

Our state no longer picks up dead deer. They claim it costs too much money. So it is up to homeowners to do what they want with the carcass, if it is on their property.

Yes, we would dispose of it elsewhere if we had woods or somewhere else to take it.

Yup, it sits there until it rots away or something drags it away.

I wouldn't touch a dead deer. Ugh. Ticks!

Our town picks them up but it takes two or three days. However, we are about 25 mins from the Wolf Conservation Center (So. Salem, NY) and they will pick up if you call them -- wolves love ungulates. Before feeding it to the wolves, they freeze and then thaw the carcass, to kill any diseases. For this reason, I would not feed random raw deer to a household pet.

Nope. And our Dept of Conservation is one of the richest in the US. You do need their approval to take the deer for human consumption. They will send an agent to make sure it's legitimate road kill and not poached. But, they don't dispose of unwanted carcasses.
