Today the talk of the office has been the rising gas prices by summer. Some people are tempted to trade in there SUV for a car. In fact one person is :car: . Who is planning on trading in there SUV before the gas hikes. This economy is getting outta of control!

Already did a couple months ago. :teeth: DH is also getting rid of his truck soon.

Palmtreegirl if you don't mind me asking what kind of SUV did you have before and what kind of car did you get? Was it a huge difference going from an SUV to a car? Do you miss your SUV?

For us our SUV is a necessity so we won't be getting rid of it any time soon. Even with the escalating gas prices it would not be feasable for us not to have a vehicle that could not carry the both of us and our 3 large dogs.

Well it's not exactly my choice, since my father bought it for me, and as a college kid, I can't exactly afford to buy a car, and I definitely wouldn't make much off of my SUV.
That being said, I'm not giving it up anytime soon. Yes, the gas consumption stinks, but there are still too many benefits. I've driven regular cars and they just do not handle as well as my SUV does on the roads around my house. My mom's car needs a realignment about once a month. My truck hasn't had one in almost 2 years :thumbsup2 Our regular cars cannot make it up my dad's driveway in the winter, or after a bad thunderstorm in the summer (dirt mountain driveways wash out and get ruts deeper than my tires and half as wide as my Explorer. True fact). Visibility tends to be pretty bad at intersections in the area; it's much easier to see when I'm higher up. Winter driving is much easier in my truck. I put my truck to the test and it performs well. I need the benefits that it gives me

We have a Blazer that gets about 20 mph highway and we are trading that in for a minivan this summer. The van gets about 25 mph on the highway but it gets better city mileage then the Blazer and I need the room. I will miss the 4 wheel drive come winter, but we will have traction control, hopefully. I want the van regardless of gas prices, we traded our old van for a car for DH to drive because of the gas prices. We just haven't found the new van we want yet or I would have that now.

I will be next year when my lease is up but not just for the gas mileage. I will be getting a minivan. I know the gas mileage is a little bit better but not a whole lot. I mainly want one b/c it is easier to get kids in and out of a van. I will miss it especially during our Ohio winters but maybe when they get older I can go back to an SUV if I do not like the van.

I'd trade mine immediately if they'd pay me even CLOSE to blue book on it. I have a Suburban. I tried to trade it last year, and they offered me $22K on it. Blue book was nearly $29K.

No way !!! My Explorer is the most comfortable vehicle I've ever owned...it is also very practical for my job. My DH has a Nissan Titan, he isn't trading his in either...I'm sorry, he is 6'3", I'm 5'11", and DS is 6'1" and growing...we can't do the car/minivan things. Maybe there should be a taxcut for those of us that can prove we have long legs !!!

nope, but mine is a Honda CRV so I get decent gas mileage. I'm actually considering trading up to a Pilot. I'm a SAHM so I don't drive that much except on weekends. If I commuted 65 miles a day like my dad did I might reconsider.

Same problem here - I have Jeep Liberty (not really all that bad, 20-21 mpg highway, which is what I drive) and DH has a Dodge Dakota (bad - 15-16 mpg highway). If we could get decent $$ for them, we'd trade them in.

DH & I both drive 500 miles a week - 1000 miles x all that gas = a lot of our paychecks going to Mobil. I do pay attention now to how many "extra" trips I make outside of going to work and try to combine shopping trips or family visits as much as possible.

My landcruiser RIGHT. Not anytime soon. And if I did trade it in it wouild be for the same thing or the lexus version. I am not about to climb in a minivan and we need the passenger room and the storage space.Frankly I am tired of hearing people whine about the gas prices. It wasn't going to stay 1.35 forever.

I have 2 years left on the lease of my EnvoyXL..so I am stuck!

I will see what those 2 years bring and reconsider then...but I LOVE my SUV and would be very hard pressed to get rid of it :guilty:

I had a Hyundai Santa Fe. Last year some idiot smacked into me and totaled it. I decided that because of gas I would get a car. I went for the Toyota Celica. I now get gas once every two weeks. It's great. Problem is I miss my Santa Fe more than anything in the whole world. I am now looking for a new car, probably another Santa Fe or maybe the Tuscon. I know that I am going in the total opposite direction than what most of the world is thinking, but I just miss it and I am starting to hate my car... :sad2:

I've had my Tucson since September and I really like it. The gas mileage is about the same as it was in our Grand Am.

To answer the OP's question, no I wouldn't give up this SUV, but it's a compact model. I'd certainly never go any larger, though. When the kids are grown and out of the house, then it'll be time to get a smaller car, but until then I'm happy with it.

DH wants to get a compact car. He's driving our Grand Am to work now (120 miles round trip) and it's killing us.

We traded my Ford Expedition for a Honda CRV....I am so glad we did....I miss the room when we have guests but it is usually just dh and I, sometimes dd18....We get over 30 on the highway and about 21 around town. My dh would trade in his truck if he could get a decent trade, but that is unlikely.

No! :teeth: The only way I'd give it up is if we couldn't afford it anymore. I get about 16.4 mpg, I do 99% city driving.

Maybe if salaries would rise along with the gas prices, nobody would need to "whine," as you put it.

It costs my husband $15 a DAY just to get to work. We are very fortunate that we can handle it. I really feel for the people who don't make enough money to cover their gas costs in an area where there is no public transportation whatsoever.

I'll give up my Dodge Durango the day my DH let's me haul my chickens to and from the shows and fairs in his Lexus sports coupe. Not gonna happen...
