Would you find this funny?

If I saw heavy people wearing them I'd think it was pretty funny--the irony would be apaprent. If I saw a "fit" person wearing one I'd think they were pretty arrogant.

I would laugh at you, then with you, then go buy a shirt like that for myself to carry on the good fun!!! I would have probably said the same exact thing to the first t-shirt wearer that you did! LOL!!!!

I just remembered a t-shirt I saw that I really liked - it said

"I do what the rice krispies tell me to"

:rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao:

HEHEHE! Well, that settles it, I'm going to have to make them up or get them for DH and me! I think that girl got hers at Aeropostale (sp?), and I'm fairly certain their sizes don't go above medium, right? :lmao:

Hey, 4GBLC, do you want me to come talk to your wife? Maybe I can get her on board with the ironic tee shirt club. Or should we call it the "Fatty Tee" club??? :rotfl2:

Ooh, I just thought of another bonus. This will surely mortify my kids! :thumbsup2
Embarrassing the children. Just one more service we offer!!!!!! ;) :lmao:

I would think that was very cute and fun! :)

Once in awhile I see a shirt with a cute or clever saying, but I never buy them. Maybe I should. I think if you and your DH want to wear fun shirts you should do it!

EDIT: My favorite hat at WDW is the one with the witch from Snow White that says "Most days I'm skinny and beautiful, but today is my day off." If it was an actual hat I would buy it, but the one I saw was a visor which sort of defeats the purpose of wearing a hat, IMO.

I can definitely see where someone might get that impression, but I assure you it's not the case with me. I can't speak for others, but the overweight people I know feel the same way.

For me, it's all about mocking and poking fun at a society that believes that the measure of a person's worth is in the size clothing one wears.

Amen!!

My thoughts exactly.
And throw in a good portion of envy for not being able to have the dedication and discipline to get and stay in shape.
And I must also remark that I hate the term 'Pooh-sized'. I'm always asking myself if people would call themselves 'Shamu-sized' if this were a SeaWorld-board ;)
Now that society has nearly won its war against smoking, it should turn its attention towards fighting obesity.

Just wanted to point out that the size of your body is not always a reflection of dedication and discipline.

I have a very heavy friend who watches what she eats and works out at least 4 times a week. I have never known her not to be on her way to the gym or having just gotten back from the gym. I have another friend who eats very unhealthy and eats lots of fast foods almost daily. She rarley works out but occasionaly will walk. She is the first one to admit that it annoys her how many compliments she gets on being a size 4. She really has done nothing to be a size 4 and will admit that too.

You can not always judge a person upon their weight. Sounds like you haven't done your homework. There are all sorts of chemicals in the brain that cause some people to be more hungry than others and other forces at work that cause obesity. I could go on but this argument gets tiring.

Please do not judge others unless you have walked a mile in their shoes.

I want the shirt that says, "Department of Redundancy Department" :rotfl:

What about, "Why use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice?" :rotfl2: English geek that I am, that always cracks me up.

*zips up flame suit*
I agree.

Also, I know that some people are overweight or obese due to medical issues, but it's probably about 1% (maybe even less) of the Western population.

*is speaking as someone who is overweight at the moment.. see ticker!*

I would love to see society turn its attention towards fighting obesity, but only if we can manage to do it in an intelligent and dignified manner, and by attacking it medically, and with plenty of support. There's enough shame associated with being fat without the attacks and disgust people show towards the overweight. And let's face it, that's how we battled smoking -- by making it a stigma and making smokers feel like second class citizens. Having quit smoking after 20 years of doing it, I know discipline and dedication quite well, but quitting smoking and losing weight can't be compared at all. Apples and oranges here.

I love the term Pooh-sized. Pooh is a sweet character that everybody loves, and I think it's great that people here have picked up on it. :goodvibes I don't know enough about Shamu to make a comparison. Have they made a character out of him? Is it an intelligent character?

I love it! LOVE it! If I saw you at WDW, I would give you a big smile and maybe even a high five. I love that you are comfortable enough with yourself to pulll it off, too.

You go girl--don't let the skinny chicks get you down!
ITA with this. Except maybe the high-five part.

I would laugh with you and then ask you where you got them. Being pooh sized myself I would love one!!

Lame excuses

How comes that it is obvioulsy OK for an XXL-person to make fun of an attractive person. :confused3 Has she walked a mile her shoes - that is, if she fits in there ;) The OP did exactly that: She judged a person because of here weight - respectively lack of it.

You'd better do your homework. Then you would know that only a very small percentage of obese people is overweight because they are sick - But a lot of of obese people are sick because they are overweight.

All that talk about hormones or being pooh-sized is the same behaviour as an alcoholic denying that he has a problem.

You can't only fight it medically. You need to change society. Just compare the containers food is sold in in the USA and in Europe. Nobody over here would think about i.e. ice-cream in one gallon containers (They are available, but mainly for restaurants, not for private households). The ridiculously large portions served in restaurants. Fridges as large as closets. Communities in which it is impossible to do your errands walking. Etc ad nauseam.

Using a sweet character to describe a negative appearance is trying to make that appearance attractive. This takes away the negaive image and thus lessens the need to change. What would you say about using a Disney-character to promote smoking? :confused3

I was actually going to reply to your first post of being envious of a skinny person drive and determination as being incorrect--lots of overweight ppl have drive and determination(notice I omitted the word obese)--There are many factors involved in being overweight the same as there are in being skinny----First and formost GENETICS,many are given what they have to work with--Second SEX be they male or female because as we know females are more prone to be overweight than males are and there are reasons for this also mainly the ability to give birth and to do so on more than one occasion and to go with that nurturing.
AS for you comments in this post about people being sick because they are overweight you sort of do have a point but again many diseases suffered by overweight people are also suffered by skinny people but with different base causes---And the comment about comparing overweight people to being an alcoholic is a bad analogy---Alcoholics constantly deny the existence of a problem whereas overweight people KNOW that there is a "problem" and choose to deal w/it in a myriad of ways-be it they are comfortable being the person they are OR have on numerous occasions done something to lessen their weight and may STILL be in the process of shedding pounds--
As for telling someone to "DO THEIR HOMEWORK" you should sign yourself up to that class because at least then you may have some! And along the way you may actually learn something that may be worth repeating!

WOW

what was originally a funny thread turned into a downright nasty one. Some things on the DIS NEVER EVER CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the internet, no one knows you so you can be downright nasty to anyone you so please. On the same note, you could be downright nice too.

Maybe some pamprin would help! (oops, maybe I just started a new nasty debate on how nasty it is to mention a ladies monthly!)

Seems to me that a lot of people here have issues...

I am looking forward to seeing when this will get ugly... :surfweb:

You're right - overweight and obese people (overweight and obese are two different things - one being more extreme than the other) can have drive and determination. However, I believe that genetics and sex really are very minor points and are sometimes used as excuses by people who are overweight/obese (I'm quite willing to tell you that I am overweight because I have spent the last year eating like a pig and laying around - not nice, but I'm being truthful to myself and others). Like I said before, genetics and biological issues may play a part in why some people are overweight/obese, but it really is a very small percentage of people who truly have biological (rather than psychological) disorder. And, like me, some people are just plain greedy and lazy*.

I also agree that you cannot compare alcoholism and eating disorders (overeating disorders specifically). However, while overweight/obese people may be aware that there is a problem, some do choose to play the blame game (which is unfortunate).

*I'm a runner too - but I'm terribly lazy other than that!

You have to eat, you don't have to drink alcohol. It's not anywhere near the same thing. Comparing the two is ridiculous.

It's not ok to make fun of anyone. No one here said it was!

I never said that being overweight was due to being sick. I said that there are chemicals in the brain and in our bodies that cause some people to eat more than others. Also people burn calories and store fat differently from person to person.

I'm not even sure if you actually read my post.

Here's some interesting READING:

Since the 1950s scientists have found that weight gain is more complex than bad eating habits. Research pointed to a brain influence. Specific molecular "front-men" who are involved in the weight control process were identified including the chemical serotonin - the target of a recently approved drug, dexfenfluramine. Other studies in the mid 1980s showed, for example, that supplements of the brain chemicals neuropeptide y or galanin, could cause overeating in mice. More recently, scientists identified several additional influences on the brain's weight system.
