Would you ever actually call a book publisher's customer service dept. and complain that the publisher was selling a book that was supportive of a gay lifestyle??? Apparently a lady just called my DBF (he does c/s phone rep work here) and did just this. The woman was FURIOUS. I mean she was using every nasty word in the book.

I do not want to reveal which publisher I work for. But we are HUGE and we also have a large Christian market, and publish many books on various political views. We try to encompass and represent all sorts of authors.

DBF explained calmly to her that she lived in the USA where everyone has a right to their own lifestyle and that if she did not like the book, she did not have to read it, nor did she have to even go into the section of the bookstore where it was shelved. And that as a publisher, it is our job to put out everyone's viewpoints and that we also sold a great deal of books that she might agree with. Well, this made her even more mad. So she hung up ranting about how she was going to sue us and she was on her way to call our editorial offices.

I just can not believe some people have nothing better to do.

This is not about whether or not you agree with a gay lifestyle or not (I personally am not offended by gay people at all, I don't really care what people do in their own bedrooms, it's none of my business, ya know? And I am not opposed to gay marriage or adoption - one of the few areas where I am actually liberal ;) ). This is about the tactlessness of someone who would call up a business, a complete stranger on the phone and demand we censor our material.

The book she was complaining about by the way, was not even an explicit book! It was, like, a cookbook or something...

I just can't wrap my mind around doing something like this. I mean there are things I don't like or agree with in this world, but I'm certainly not going to call up people who publish books on the topics and scold them. If I want to speak out about a political or moral issue , I'll write my congressman or go see a priest/rabbi or other spiritual leader.

*sigh*

That's terrible! I'm sorry your friend was subjected to that sort of outburst!

what a nutter!

me thinks this woman needs to spend some time with the Fab 5...they'll straighten her right out...or send her running for her own closet. heheeh

That lady's got problems.

I'm sorry he was subjected to a tirade as well. Since the publisher includes several genres of literature, it may well be that she is only familiar with the Christian arm of it, and assumed it was a Christian publishing company.

In which case, it would be more understandable if she thought they were going against what they normally did.

All you can do is try to be polite, but if I were him, I would not lecture or debate any callers (as he was starting to do with the "live in the USA" stuff) just politely give her information and hang up as quickly as possible.

Sadly, all of our c/s people are subject to outbursts of all sorts all the time. Once, one of the guys (a Black guy) got a call from some Black History Lit. type organization / bookstore and on the phone with him actually went off on a tirade about how we were not selling her books in time for her event because she was talking to an obvious "white supremecist ______" . His response was simple, "Ma'am , I am actually an African American gentleman myself. We are not selling you books, because you have refused to pay your last 6 invoices over the course of two years".

That shut her right up.

I used to be in the c/s dept. I escaped a year or two ago but Chris , my boyfriend and my other best friend are still there. And still listening to lunatics.

Some people are just very ignorant.

I suspect she may have been thinking that, although when I saw we are a huge publisher, I mean HUGE. As in our name is widely known because we are a large media company as well and that is the first thing she heard when she called in.

*shrug*

He probably should not have started debating her though, you're right. I shudder to think what would have happened if the gay man who sits at the cubicle next to him happened to get that particular call, since the calls all go to random c/s reps.

And I thought I had too many screws loose!!!

I'd never do this ... if I disagreed with some book a company published, I just wouldn't buy it. No need to call some poor c/s rep and rag on them about something they have no control over.

Sometimes people just need to vent, but they should try writing it on paper or on their PC, then hit the delete button. Accomplishes the same thing -- it gets it off your chest and out of your mind and no one else is subjected to some needless tirade.

She needs some hobbies. Maybe she should try Dising?::yes::

I recently came VERY close to sending a letter to GlaxoSmithKline for a commercial they'd been running...a laughable bit of propaganda...but then it slipped my mind.

Now there's this Pepto Bismol commercial...horrific! Now, THOSE PEOPLE really need a talking to.;)

Okay - now I'm curious....what happens in this commercial??

You know what I want to know? On what grounds she was going to sue! LOL! What a maroon.

2bemarried-is that right? Well, I am pleasantly surprised!!!:):)

Esme-if it's the one I'm thinking of, GSK was promoting their bio research and comparing it with that of "rocket science"...that "rocket scientists" get all the glory bc "you can see a rocket"...not so easy on the "molecular level".

Please.. first "rocket scientists" work on a QUANTUM level and bio research is absolutely FLOODED with money and GLORY relative to space research...who are they kidding? I could go on...

I hope we're all talking about the same thing...:o

I think DBF actually asked her that but she hung up as he was doing so.

 Winka I had completely forgotten about that commercial. I was referring to the one for Levitra (the next Viagra)....it has a football going through a tire swing.

Ooops.:o:o

I missed that one!:p Lol! I'll have to look out for the Levitra one.;)

No, I wouldn't, but back in 1995 I did send an angry complaint letter to Playgirl when they advertised that Lorenzo Lamas was going to be posing nude. :hyper: I hunted down a copy and he had all his clothes on.

I also lost all respect for him as an actor. :p

i always thought the football through the tire swing was sort of funny. those commercials for impotence always crack me up. like the one when they are sitting in two seperate bathtubs holding hands. as one of my friends says, maybe they'd have better luck if they were in the same tub. :p
