Would you consider this child abuse?

The weather here has been terribly hot and humid. Almost to the point that I am having a hard time breathing outside.

Well anyway, the other day, my daughter and I went to the beach to see if there was any type of breeze by the ocean. Nope there wasn't, it was actually very still and so so muggy. There was a young girl about 18-20 with a baby in a car seat. She was laying out tanning. I heard the cry, and could tell it was a newborn, so I approcahed her to see the baby, well, the baby was BRAND SPANKING NEW. 8 days old, in a one piece sleeper with a blanket over the top of the carrier. She moved the blanket and when I see this baby was sweating and totally red from he heat, I am not exagerating. I told her I thought maybe it was too hot for such a little baby, and she just ignored me. My dd and I stayed for about another hour or so and she was still there when we left.

Do you think exposing newborns to extreme heat is child abuse?

I do.

IANAD, but can't newborns overheat much more easily than adults or older kids? (I.e., their "cooling system" doesn't work right yet.) If that's the case, yes, I would definitely say it's child abuse. If that's not the case, and there's no chance of major damage, the caretaker is still a ****head.

Child endangerment and totally irresponsible..

OMG how horrible for that poor baby!! WTH would the Mother want to be out getting a tan when she just had a baby 8 days ago anyway?

Awful. I hope she took your advice and got that baby out of there.

Thats what I thought, I was in no shape to be on the beach 8 days post partum, but this little chickee must of bounced back right in hospital. She was totally clueless about the heat. I just didn't know what else to say her. I could tell she wasn't hearing me no matter what. In hindsight, I probably should have called CPS.

My son is a July baby, and I swear I don't remember taking him to the beach until the following year.

Just goes to show, selfishness knows no boundaries. How sad for that poor baby, I'm sure he/she is very sick today.

Maybe it was to look good for her prom or graduation  . Honestly, she sounds like a very irresponsible kid all around. I hope the baby is ok.

i agree with what everyone else has posted.

OT, but CEDmom, that new pic of your daughter is adorable. :)

Youth stupidity? You would think she would pick up EASY hints from you! :( I hope the darling baby is okay.

CEDmom...Your daughter's picture is precious! :teeth:

without a doubt, it is child abuse, endangerment, neglect!

That poor child..:(

Yes.

What a selfish mother. People like that do not deserve to have children. I'm sorry, once you decide to have a baby, you're ability to sit outside and tan whenever you want to is gone. Your baby comes first.

YES! It is child abuse! What was that woman thinking doing that to her baby?! Jeez, you really wonder about some people! Thank goodness you said something to her!

I would have called authorities. Katie was born June 28th and we never took her to the beach until late September and then only for a few days and under a shaded tent.

Makes me wonder why people like that are blessed with children.

Yes. most definitely child abuse/endangerment. Even if there had been a breeze, I've always heard that the beach breeze/air can be difficult for newborns to handle (don't know if that's true or not). Next week, she'll probably leave the baby in the car on a 90 degree day, as she runs into the grocery store to pick up a few things:mad:
