Would you buy it?

Hello All!

I've been lurking here for months on end & I'm not much of a poster (as you can tell from my post count) at any rate. I have the Nikon D90.

Adorama has the Sigma 30 rated in V condition (mentions a cracked dof scale window) for $269. I have the Nikon 35mm f1.8 because I couldn't stop myself after reading & looking at everything here!

I honestly don't care what the lens looks like but would you buy one in V condition? Considering the price?

Do I "need" this lens since I have the 35mm (my DH would say I don't "need" anything, LOL)? How much of a difference will it make?

Or would you go for something wider instead? I was actually looking at those lenses and stumbled across this one.

Looking forward to your responses!

Thanks so much!

Allison

Well, how often do you think you'd actually need to go down (up? the terms always confuse me but I know what I mean, lol) to 1.4? More often then you'd use 1.8? And will the 5mm make any difference? I think we all get caught up in "gotta have faster glass" and forget to think about how often we'll really use it. There are those who use it exclusively of course and they do an awesome job of it. If it were me I'd look at my shooting style and see how often you'd really use it. Me personally, I wouldn't see a "need" for that extra little bit. I own the Sigma 30 and think I would have been just as happy with the Nikon 35.

Like wenrob mentioned... How often do you find yourself saying "oh I wish I could just go a little wider on the aperture"? Although I would say that I'd not be just as happy with the 35mm 1.8.

I personally have the Sigma 30 and shoot at 1.4 or 1.6 a lot. I find the wider aperture really useful although I don't think I'd care between 30 and 35mm.

I was going to buy the "nifty fifty" but knew I'd end up wanting the 1.4 instead of the 1.8 so I sprung for the Sigma.

If you don't find yourself at 1.8 a lot with the 35mm, or wishing you could open the aperture a little more, then keep what you have. If not, I'd buy the Sigma. I think that's a great price for something that's guaranteed. I took the chance on Ebay and bought mine used for $326 shipped.

I really love that Sigma 30/1.4. At the end of the day it is very similar in function to what you already have in the 35/1.8 of course- which is also a fine lens. I really like shooting a 'standard' lens and have several for various reasons. The Sigma has a unique signature which I like and produces more saturated warmer colors than the Nikon in my opinion. The Nikon is smaller, lighter and closer focusing. Both are sharp and quick to focus. If you want it I say go for it- if you find one or the other not getting much use down the road you can always sell it.
