Would This Statement Offend You?

Here is going to be my signature:

"I'm smart enough not to be a liberal"

I don't agree. It's not the fact that the faith is being undermined, or that someone isn't trying to undermine the OP's faith, but rather that since this friend knows how strongly the OP (or OP's sister) feels about her faith, the friend is kind of thumbing her nose and not respecting the feelings of the OPs sister, knowing as a former Christian that the OP's sister has very strong feelings.

I don't believe that this is what she means by having that phrase in her signature, & believe that she can put whatever she wants. However, from the OP's sister's POV, I can understand that she would be upset. I still think she needs to get over it, because that statement isn't about her. (I think)

I was not aware that the only God is the Christian God. It is not as if she said "Thank God I am an Athiest and not Christian!" "God", as far as I know, is not trademarked to Christ, Jesus or Christians. Rather self centered to think that every time someone mentions "God" that it means the Christian God.

If you feel you need to take offense at something so minor, no one will stop you, but it is ALL about you and has little about the person or statement you are choosing to find offensive.

Yes, I would find that remark offensive. The person is completely free to be an atheist if they choose to be, but mocking a God that I believe in is offensive. Now if the person would say "thank goodness I'm an atheist" that wouldn't bother me at all, but when they mock God it does.

What I would like to know is how someone can find "Jesus Loves You" (written in the sky) offensive, but not a statement similar to the one put forward by the OP...? It just doesn't make sense..? :confused3

For some reason the skywriting seems like a way bigger deal to me than a siggy. I don't have a reason though, it just does. :confused3 The skywriting thing at Disneyworld would grate on my nerves, it's just too much "in my face" it would feel like a total stranger coming up and yelling it in my face. A siggy is like a bumper sticker to me, I never find them offensive even if they say something I totally disagree with.

And just how do you know that they're talking about YOUR God? :confused3

It doesn't offend me, but it does make me sad. It sounds to me that something happend that has her upset with God. If she's thanking God than obviously she's not really an atheist.

OK, I'm still here :) - but I'm not working, I'm just interested in this thread.

You are right what you just said, but I think the question was - what's offensive, not what's funny. I can't help but laugh at Howard Stern sometimes, and he's a pig, but he is offensive/funny. I found in the original post an interesting question. Lots of people have implied here, I think that nothing is off limits, but I just don't agree. Maybe there are some funny AIDS jokes, or 9/11 jokes, maybe, but the question is whether or not they are offensive, and as you said, proprietym common sense, and evaluating the situation is important.

Personally, I don't think the signature mentioned in the OP is either funny or offensive, but this discussion just got me thinking about what is offensive and what is funny. You don't joke about the Holocaust much, around Jews, even if you have some gut buster, can't imagine what that would be, but those of you who think nothing is off limits...

My sentiments exactly!!!

I think the siggy is offensive when it is sent to the OP and her sister because the friend knows they would not like it.

I don't find it offensive at all. Just tacky to do it above a tourist attraction where I may want to take a picture of the blue sky and clouds over main street, but now I have this in the background. I would find it tacky if it said "Eat at Joe's". I believe that was the sentiment of most people. But on this thread, those who loved the skywriter seem to find this offensive. Hmmmm...

How many of us have sat around a funeral home, making sick jokes... :rolleyes1 hopefully not just me! :p

There's a funeral parlor here in Minneapolis that I can't even drive by without laughing, and it's their own fault...as you approach the building, there's a big sign that says the name of the funeral parlor, and right beneath it, a smaller sign saying 'exit only'! :rotfl:

And as for the canser ward jokes, one of my best friends died of gall bladder cancer last year, and (when she was coherent enough to talk) she was making jokes with us right up to the end...

And for the record, this athiestic old gay guy with AIDS has heard many funny (and many not funny) jokes about all of these and more, and thinks 'Thank God I'm An Athiest' is very funny!

I totally agree. She is a friend of the family. My sister finds it very offensive. I personally find it sad. Not because she is an athiest. We are all entitled to choose what we believe in, but because she uses the word "God" in it.

i find it more offensive that the word God is on our money than anything else.

the comment doesn't offend me. believe what you want to believe, as long as you're not hurting anyone. it doesn't make them a bad person.

My dad is dying from cancer as I type this.

He hasn't lost his sense of humor even at this point but I must say he hasn't made one joke about having cancer.

There isn't a DAMN thing funny about cancer. Not one thing.

Maybe you see a funny wig or have a funny experience while receiving chemo but to laugh at cancer itself, yeah, tonight, especially, I find that offensive. To think of anyone laughing about cancer itself makes me sick to my stomach.

I'm sorry about your dad...I would never make a joke about someone else battleing a disease unless,I knew them and knew it was OK...I make jokes about my disease. It's either laugh or cry. I choose to laugh. MY habiit of poking fun at serious things does get me into trouble on occasion as you have seen. .People close to me will also joke about my disease...I think it's all in how it's said and who is saying it..Again sorry about your father.

Thanks Jenny. I pretty much been an *** on these boards tonight and of course, this is why. I really should get off and get some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a hard day and I have to work all day on top of that.

I am sorry about being extremely sensitive about this.

Hey, understand. Really.

That really depends on the joke. I can't imagine there are many funny jokes about 9/11, but hey, maybe I just can't take a joke. That's possible.
I still remember the first night David Letterman was back on the air after 9/11. He had a newscaster or someone on as a guest, they were talking about it fairly seriously, then Dave asked,

"Why do they hate us...? Is it because we have cable?"

That had the guest, the audience, and me rollin'. :rotfl: But I can't imagine there are many more, either.

As for the siggie, I've always gotten a chuckle out of that one. I'm Christian and not offended in the least.

Hey, Buckalew, I'm sorry about your dad, too. :grouphug: I've watched both my parents slowly succumb to disease, and no, there is nothing funny about it. :sad1:
