Would/Did you bring your DSLR camera?

I say leave home without it...

I am a professional photographer and I find Leaving it behind lifts a huge weight off my shoulder, literally. Many peeps say you can not get great shots without it, well that means either a) your choice of point and shoot is bad (I always choose Canon Point and Shoot) and b) you are not taking the time to create a great photo. I have never had any problems capturing professional shots with my Canon SD1200 IS ( this is the newer model Canon SD1300 IS) I have attached a few photos I took last September to show you the quality you can get with the camera I suggest...

I am torn on whether or not I should bring my DSLR or just a point and shoot. I feel like the DSLR camera is so big but I also am so used to it, it bugs me how long it takes to snap a picture with a point and shoot. did you bring yours to disney and carry it around? Thanks!

Yep I brought mine it wasnt a problem my bag is just like this one:

http://alatest.com/reviews/digital-camera-accessories/kata-bag-48/po3-67082625,24/

I figured I'd only carry my camera bag no backpack/purse it'd be too annoying.

Me being a girl I carry more stuff so I was skeptical as to whether or not this would work out or be a problem but it was fine. I kept my camera and lenses in the bag and put chapstick/eyeliner/maps/cell phone/wallet in the front pocket. During the trip I bought a Dooney and Bourke wrist purse and put most of my stuff in there so it worked out really well.

I even comfortably carried around my nephew, who is a pretty heavy baby, without any troubles from my bag. No sore shoulders or anything.

P.S. as for rides it was fine I wrap my camera around me leg just as a precautionary measure. As for kali river rapids be sure to place the bag in the middle of the bin on your raft again just as a precautionary measure. I couldnt imagine not having my DSLR with me!

I just ordered a baggillini....Anyone use one to carry their DSLR and extra stuff around??? I can't decide if I want to take mine or just use our P&S.

I actually take my DSLR in a camera backpack with all lenses, external flash, extra batteries, etc., along with my pocket sized digital and digital camcorder (this also is in backpack). My son has previously taken our old digital camera but hardly used it because of speed, he used the pocked sized mostly for pictures he took himself. When we went back to the room for the night, I would download all pictures to laptop I brought and wipe the cameras, and charge all batteries for the next day.

I plan the ADRs and DH plans what lenses, camera, tripod and case he will take. Usually by the time we go I could kick one of the five or six cases (Tamrac, Pelican, Low-pro Outback(I think that is his fav)===blah blah blah) :lmao: across the floor. I know that is not funny to those of you who take it seriously....but if DH can laugh at my OFFICIAL DISNEY EXCEL SPREADSHEET...then I can laugh at the agony he goes through picking the right stuff. Don't even get me started on the poor guy getting his stuff through security at the airport--bless his heart he almost has to take an Ativan when/if the equipment is out of sight.

But he gets incredible pictures and I love him for it.

Are there rides that you aren't allowed to take your bags with you on the rides?? My DSLR isn't cheap and I wouldn't want it to get stolen or have to constantly get a locker to lock it up?? How does that work when you are carry a bag with you anyway with the kids' snacks and other essentials that you would carry with you during the day?

this is exactly what I did back in October. I have a Tamrac backpack that doubles as my purse as well. I take minimal things into the park other than my camera bp. I did not have any issues, took over 3,500 pics in 10 days and am beyond thrilled I had my dslr with me. I am also an amateur but managed some spectacular pics with my new "baby" :cutie: Good luck with whatever you decide!

I'm returning to Disney World for the first time in 21 years and have been and have asking myself the same question. I've decided that I'm definitely bringing my DSLR with me, can't spend a whole week without it.

That said, I'm planning on bring selective when it comes to bringing it to the parks. I'll be upgrading my p&s in the next month and with the compact size, increased quality and video abilities I think it will be more than good enough for most of the days in the park. But, when it comes to some of the special more difficult shots, I'll plan on taking my DSLR with me.

I have an issue that I hope someone can help me with. To save room, I'm probably not going to bring my laptop on this trip and use my iPad instead. Because of this , I won't have a easy way to back up my CF and SD cards. Does anyone have any suggestions of the best way to back them up? I think I can rent a computer at my resort to 69¢ a minute, but am also looking for other possibilities.

I have found if I do not take my DSLR on our trips (which is very frequently) I feel like i miss a lot of wonderful shots, both of the family and scenery. I always take it to WDW but only take it into the parks when i plan on doing alot of meet and greets or when my admittance is specifically for photos.

You can get the camera connection kit of the iPad..It comes with two adaptors one works directly with SD cards and then the second adaptor is for usb which you can plug the camera directly into that with the USB cable it comes with and back up CF cards that way.... iPad reads RAW files as well so you aren't limited to shooting in Jpeg if you don't want to.

Although I haven't been to Disney World yet, our trip is in Sept, I too don't want to bring my laptop. From what I understand, you can upload all of your photos from your camera to the photo pass system each day through one of their kiosks. Not sure of the specifics exactly, or even if it will take video or just pics. Once your vacation is over, you purchase the photo pass cd called the personal photo archive CD.

I would email the photo pass people to get more details of how it works and let us know.

Good Luck!

Thanks meachell13, have almost bought the adapters a few times, but this may be a great use for them. I probably still want to find a way to back up all my photos and video onto a portable hd, but the adapters may be an extra way to view and backup my better photos.

Do you know if the adapters allow you to view or pull over video?

Thanks for the advice, will have to look into that more. I'm going with my brother, sister-in-law and two nieces, so I will be shooting a lot of photos/video. We were also looking into photo pass, a great way to get us all in a photo or I can shoot video when they are shooting the photos.

If you are able to backup your photos onto the CD with a Kiosk that would be great. Will have to look into that.

i bring DSLR, P & S, and a camcorder.....its a little much but I feel better having the options. I dont drag all 3 everyday though. I really like DSLR and lenses for AK.

Yes they say online on apple website that they will pull video... (I haven't pulled video over just photos) I have the kit myself and love how easy it is to use. Just plug the adaptor in with the card or camera attached and it pops up the photo app then you choose the ones you want to transfer over. The images are kinda small at this point but you can transfer them in and then see them big screen and if you grabbed the wrong one it is easy to trash if needed. Love love love my iPad :lovestruc

Thanks meachell13, I will definitely have to buy the kit now. Still don't think I'll have enough room on my iPad to fit all my photos/videos, but I should be able to fit most of my photos, and rent a pc at the resort to backup my videos. My DSLR if a few generations old, Canon XTI, which uses CF cards, so I guess I'd need to use the USB adapter for it. I am aware that the kit has both the sd adapter and the USB adapter.

What about the speed of the transfer? Do they copy over at a decent speed? Also, do you have to be careful about deleting photos from the CF card, does the transfer have a delete photos check box when you transfer?

Or maybe I need to talk my brother into bringing his laptop with him. :rotfl2:

I have a couple questions about the kit you're referring to. Does it come with a SDHC card reader? If not, how would I transfer the photos to my iPad? I do like the idea of just bringing the iPad instead of the laptop, I'm just concerned that the jpg files+1080p video may fill up the memory. Has anyone had this happen?

Hey Wadecool, I haven't bought the kit yet, but have done some research and think I can answer a few of your questions. For $30 the kit comes with two adapters, a USB conecter (directly connect your camera with the iPad, also may work with a few other items) and a SD adapter, so you can pull your SD card out of you camera and insert it into the adapter. Once you insert you card, the iPad will open up the photo app and you can import select photos or your entire card. As far as speed goes, I read a review that pulled over 120 photos at around 250mb from a p&s in under 3 minutes. The kit also will copy over video, but I would think that they may only pull over certain formats,so you may not have luck doing it. The iPad will pull over jpeg and RAW files at full-size. It also creates a lower Rez thumbnail for viewing on the iPad.

As far as photos and video filling up you iPad, yes they will. It depends on the size of you iPad and how much space you leave free before you leave. I would suggest being selective with what you pull over and keep on the iPad. Also, remember that you can delete apps, photos, video (TV shows, movies) to create more room.

Also, look into what your resort offers. For the one I'm staying at, you can rent a pc for 69¢ a minute. I plan on copying my cards onto a portable hard drive during the trip, to make sure I always have a back up.

Mike and Wade.....
Sorry I didn't respond earlier! I got caught up in some other threads researching! :) I feel that the iPad transfer rate is very decent. The adaptors hook into the slot that you hook into to charge (not sure what you call that kind of connection) then the other end has either the USB end or the place where you push in the SD cards. As far as I know, nothing else is supported through the USB cable except for actually plugging in a camera for transfer. I tried to hook in my multi-card reader into the USB connector so that I could just directly hook in my CF cards that way. It won't read it b/c it says 'it needs to much power for iPad to support it' But the camera supports there own power so you are good to go on that.

After you connect, the app launches and you select the images that you want to transfer over or you can hit select all. These will be thumbnail images so some similar looking images might be hard to tell the difference...but if you import in and then didn't like something you can always delete it to free up space.

As far as the amount that you are going to be able to back up will depend on your camera file sizes that you have it set to and the Megapixels of the camera along with the version of the iPad that you have. I have a Canon 7D and for all of my pro work I'm shooting in RAW (some on vacation might be as well) but one of these files for me straight out of the camera is around 22 MB, high quality JPEGs are going to be around 5MB and if I were to use a medium RAW file they are going to fall somewhere in between... The XTi is not going to be anywhere near that big.... You can guess though based on your memory cards how far that is going to go for you though. If you use 4GB cards, 8 GB, etc. And like you said if you need to rent the laptop do that to put on the external hard drive... or possibly you can go on Amazon and buy several more SD cards. Now the CF cards aren't as cheap unless you catch a sale or a rebate or something especially if you are looking at professional quality cards that keep up with the 1080p video.....
