Worried about not getting a reservation

I am a new DVC member and I received developer points that can only be used at Saratoga Springs (they can be used elsewhere, but this is the only DVC where they can be used). Also - they must be used up by August 23 09. I already planned my vacation for next summer and my flights are booked. We want to stay at Saratoga Springs from Aug 16 - Aug 22 next year. I can not make my reservation until 7 months in advance because this is not my home resort. I would appreciate your opinions on whether I will have a problem getting a reservation. I want two studios for this time period.

I don't think you'll have any problem getting two studios at SSR at the 7 month window for the second half of August. Reservations fall off pretty dramatically the second half of August due to school. Good luck!

i wouldn't worry.....august is much slower than the rest of the summer......

actually.....the summer is not nearly as bad the last couple times i was there as it was 15-20 years ago.....

I think more people are just deciding not to go in the summer and yanking the kids.....which is not a bad idea at all....

At least from my perspective.....the amount of actual material learned over primary and secondary school (my background was a fairly affluent public school) was pitifully low.....

there's nothing that goes on in a week that can't be made up in a day or two afterwards....

And as the above posters stated.....many schools (southern ones....as there is no point in having August off when it's 95 when you could just have May off when it's 85) are back in session on August 1....most notable florida.....which could account for a 25% drop in attendance at a given time....

I spoke with MS yesterday about booking SSR for next August and he said it usually doesn't fill until 3 or 4 months ahead for that time period. I think you are just fine. Relax and start planning your dining!!

i would be shocked if it filled at all for that time period.....especially next year

We too are new DVC members. We bought this August and were able to snag a reservation with our developer points for what most say is a busy DVC time, early December.

From all I have read about DVC (which is ton) my guess is you'll be fine.

Shouldn't have a problem, but what happens if for some reason beyond your control you need to cancel or postpone your vacation. Based upon your dates above, you won't have time to take a later vacation and you will lose your developer points.

That is a good point. If something happens at the last minute, I could lose my developer points because I am saving them until the last possible moment. I believe that if I needed to cancel, I could still book from the passport collection as long as I do it before Aug 23rd - they can be used after this date as long as I have my reservation. I will think good thoughts because I do not want this to happen . I just want to get my Saratoga reservation.

He'll be taking what he wants from you for years to come....it's in the fine print

I wish their was no restriction on transferring developer points...only renting them is the only option with developer points....Transferring points seems so much easier...once they are transferred, control is then on the member who received the points..Renting Points is a little trickier! Hope I can arrange to use ours instead of "renting'.....

With airline trip costs and fees the way the are its tricky...Now Continental charges $150 for change fee for any changes once ticket is purchased and $150 if you use reward mileage to re-deposit ticket..Point is, want to be sure of dates before commiting to developer points when airline is a factor....
I keep watching fares daily in hopes they'll come down a little with these struggling economic times...Last thing people right now is doing is rushing out and filling these airline seats..I think alot of folks are playing the "wait and see" game for next year's travel!

Developer points are just a gimmick to get people to sign.....i don't really think too much thought went into their flexibility and ease of use....

The reason they can't be transferred is because they don't really have a home resort designation.

OMG......I was reading this and thought this is us! DH and I bought 2 200 point contracts in August while we were on the repo cruise. We have until 8/23 to use the first 200 and then 8/27 to use the second 200 developer points. We too are going to wait until August. Kids are just getting too old to be pulled out of school, its a lot for them to catch up on. We thought about trying for chistmastime but we just went on a 20 day trip to disneyland and the repo cruise in August, the money needs to be re*****hed! We think we may go to Saratoga on 8/12 and stay until 8/23. Maybe we will see you there!
