Ok, so how do you learn where the specifics on the other opportunities of where you can travel to. We love Disney and plan to go once a year, but would like to go to some other locations. Is there a list or website on where you can go and how many points it costs?

The season is determined by the destination resort.

There are also other options available to DVC Members. They are grouped together in various "Collections" - i.e., the Disney Collection (includes selected non-DVC WDW resorts, DLP, DL, DCL, etc.), the Conceirge Collection and the Adventurer's Collection.

DVC membership returns the most value if you use it to stay at DVC resorts. The other options are nice to have for an occasional change of pace, but in most cases, you will pay dearly for the convenience of using points to pay for them. You'll want to do your homework very carefully if you plan to regularly use your DVC membership for something other than a stay at a DVC resort.

It would not be a good value to buy DVC with the idea of exchanging. Carol has given you the info on where to find which resort are in the system. The reviews and ratings as well as the BBS for the Timeshare Users Group is the best place to find out about the resorts and areas themselves. For the other points trades options, you can get the info directly from DVC since it doesn't sound like you're a member yet. But the points calculator on this board has some of the info as well.
