Working on Weight Loss During Training—New Year New Us!

Beth---- Glad you liked the A1 marinate. I will only use that from now on when I do steaks on the grill.

Connie--- If I don't have a big salad everyday, I feel that I don't get in enough veggies either. You are use a good motivater to keep me going. I am trying to avoid weighing everyday, but it felt like a skinner day. :rotfl2: I doubt that I am building any more muscle, it has been 5 years since I lost 70 pounds and started my exercise program. It is just that I keep losing and gaing the same 10 pounds, it used to be 5 pounds but now has increased to 10. The only time I am ever at my goal weight is when I have a serious illness and I don't want to go there again. So I am usually 5 pounds over my goal weight which I can live with. What is interesting I have clothes that I bought when I first lost the weight that I can still wear even with the extra pounds. I guess that is the muscle that replaced the fat.

Dave--- At least is was the low fat version, so less calories that you have to work to burn off.

So far eating good today. Having my grilled chicken and salad for lunch.

Nancy

Sorry, Dave. No more Cherries Garcia. Tell Erica that you don't need it! Never let her pass the threshold with it ever again!!! Never!!! :rolleyes1 Tell her that if she loved you she wouldn't bring that kind of temptation in the house!!!! (Is that better?? :confused3 )

Nancy, got to tell ya girl, THAT sounds like muscle to me!! Technically, muscle doesn't weigh more than fat, pound for pound they weigh a pound, but muscle takes up less space than fat does!! :cheer2:

Hi Everyone,

I've been eating OK the past few days, but still not officially counting points. I'm going to try really hard to count them today.

Nancy: I’m glad you like your WW cookbook. The one I just got you're supposed to be able to make the meals in under 30 minutes which can still be a long time when you have 3 young children screaming to be fed. I really need to see how much I can prep the night before. I usually do eat my activity points, but try not to eat any of the flex points. Doesn’t always work. Sorry you gained a pound back. Stick with it and I’m sure it will go away again. Getting on the scale daily can really test your resolve. I know they tell you not to do it, but I have to.

Connie: I love your quote “food is fuel, not friends”. That’s really important to remember. Good job on cutting back on the white food. Over the past few years we’ve made a few switches to wheat bread, brown rice and wheat pasta. I now really prefer the bread and rice, but I still miss plain ole white pasta. I only have that occasionally as a really special treat. Portion size is so important. I know that is responsible for most of my weight loss these past 4 months. Since I’ve begun weighing and measuring everything I realized how much I used to over eat. Good job on the intervals. It takes a special person to do intervals by yourself, with no one making you do them. You’ll reap the rewards in your races.

Beth: Welcome to this thread. Congratulations on the 70 lb weight loss. That’s amazing. I think it is really hard balancing the extra calories you need to fuel your training without eating too many and gaining weight. Good luck.

Dave: Ouch! On the kitty climbing. Cherries Garcia is sooooo good. And cherries are good for you so at least you got some nutrition. Hang in there, the cooler weather will be there soon.

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy

Morning everyone. The weekend is coming and all the temptations with it. We eat out Friday night so I have saved all my Flex points. I have to have my wine which is where most of the points go. The other bad part is today is a rest day so don't have those extra exercise points. I did well last Friday so hope I can do the same tonight.

Connie--- I know some of it is muscle, I just wish there was less of it on my butt and thighs. hope everyone is having a healthy eating day.

Nancy

Nancy, Butts are "in". I don't have one at all. If you don't have a butt, you have a big 'ole belly. I have a belly. :sad2:

Cindylou, go to your nearest restaurant supply store, they have ladles, scoops, slotted spoons, etc in sizes!!! You can buy them in anything from a tablespoon to 1 cup. They take all the pain out of measuring. You scoop the right amount, everytime!! :goodvibes

Beth, sometimes it seems that training and weight loss can't co-exist! I think the extra carbs did that to me. That's one of the reasons I gave up white food!

Steffwalks: You are 100% right...marathon training and weight loss do not go together! I am frustrated! Right now I am trying to concentrate on healthy carbs. I will make some honey wheat bread today to have at breakfast, I am eating a banana a day, and my lastest kick is raisins! So, we'll see how that goes.

Nancy: Good luck with dining out temptations......always a struggle for me! You do better than I do all the time.....:confused3

Dave: My all time favorite is Cherries Garcia! I love it  but haven't had it in many years.....now I am thinking about it......thanks.....

Yep it's hard to train hard and not eat. We just have to make sure we keep the junk and grease to a minimum. Sorry about getting the temptation of the ice cream in your head. But it's so good on these miserable hot days.

Dave:hippie:

Ok I ate meat yesterday, GRRRRRRRRRR. I was craving some meat so for lunch at the mall where I work I had a Wendy's double with just lettace tomato and onion. I did have a baked potato with a chile hot sauce and a bottle of water with it.

Today I was back to the fish. I had micro wave steamed veggies and potato crusted cod from trhe market. It kinda tasted like a big fish stick.

Have a great day everyone and make good choices.

You guys are doing so great -- and you do a great job of keeping track of everyone's posts! I'm tickled to see this thread so active!

Steffwalks/Connie -- Intervals! Intervals! You are dah man! -- I mean, Wom-man! And I'm going to need to look into the DASH diet again. You'd think I would already be on it, what with the high blood pressure, but I think when I looked into it years ago, the family rebelled.

Nancy -- You and I have a lot in common. I gained a pound while on vacation for 3 days last week with my kids -- and I ate the grilled salmon and salads and walked every day on the hotel treadmill -- even the day we got in at 9PM after being in the sweltering heat all day. You ought to get rewarded for that, don't ya think? But, as you say, I'll just have to keep on keeping on.

Beth -- I've been afraid to commit to a number, but you've inspired me. OK, TenB4ToT is my new mantra.

Dave -- My hero and the paragon of virtue among us -- I'll bet that B&J's won't even register a blip on the scale!

The best news for me this week is that I retained my walking streak (my latest Nike+ challenge was to walk at least 3 miles/day every day in August and it was a lot harder than I expected -- I'm so spoiled by those "rest days" I usually schedule and by the freedoom to move my "normal" 4 walks all around during the week based on my life/family/work demands). Today is a 15-miler and I'm doing it indoors because I had to go get some blood work done this morning -- no way I'd make 15 miles outside in this heat advisory we have going on now! I'd best get to it! Thanks folks for being here!

Nancy and Getnthiner, I always notice a gain in "weight" when I have been eating out and having different foods, but then most of it goes away in about a week. Which leads me to believe that the majority of that gain is in fluid retention. I don't drink enough when I travel and a lot of restaurant food has more salt and sugar than I am accustomed to.

Dave, A burger?? How yummy! I love burgers! Good for you!

Congratulations on keeping up with the walking streak, Getnthinr!! :cheer2: That's excellent. And thanks for the good words about doing intervals! I appreciate all the cheers I can get!!! I have the book, "The Dash Diet Action Plan" and it is so easy! There are lots of choices....the hardest part for my hubby is not eating so much meat. But I am slowly using less meat in our meals to help him adjust. It is easy to follow has great food and recipes. Plus, it gives you 30 day meal plan. There don't seem to be many don'ts like you find in most diets.

Beth, I'm in with the 10 by ToT! Let's all get there, together!

Here's to your health - Connie

I acutally did well with eating out last night. Had the grilled chicken caesar salad, 1 piece garlic bread and just a glass and half of red wine. Small DQ choc cone for dessert. So I still have flex points left for the rest of the weekend. Tonight we are doing seafood soft shell crabs and shrimp. Plus I did 5 miles on TM today so have extra points to use.

Dave--- That hamburger sounds so yummy. We usually only do red meat about once a week since DH has had open heart surgery, not once but twice. We live on chicken, turkey and seafood. I must know a thousand ways to make chicken and turkey.

Wendy---Impressive doing all those days of walking. However, aren't rest days necessary to allow the body to recuperate. I don't blame you for doing the 15 miles inside, it is dangerous to be outside doing activities with a heat advisory. However, I saw 2 people jogging today around 2pm, that can't be good for you know matter how young they were.

Beth--- What world are you living in that you think I do better than you with following a weight loss program and dining out. I think we can both lose weight when we have to and can do what we need to do to keep it off. I have just been doing it longer than you. You are doing a great job, you need to give yourself more credit.

Connie---I always weigh more the night after eating out and my fingers are usually swollen. However, it does go away usually by the next day. We eat out at least once a week and that is usually on Friday. However, I am never one to refuse going out. After 36 years of marriage, I will gladly let someone else cook for me.

Nancy

So, I have spent the day researching dieting......how exciting! I have spent 2 years on a low carb diet that is no longer working for me since increasing my mileage per week over 30. I don't have the energy for my LR's. So, everything I read tells me to have 50% of calories in carbs, 25% fats, and 25% protein. I am willing to try this, but am not looking forward to 'counting' calories. I am going to try it until my marathon is over and then I will re-evaluate the situation. I think the carbs will help my energy, but will probably put weight on me. I am willing to try it though ((((starting MONDAY)))).

Nancy: You are better at it than me. You are a 'dog with a bone!' You have more discipline than I do. Do they have a group for that? "My name is Beth, and I am a food-a-aholic!"

Wendy: Good job with the 'streak'. I would find it very difficult! Good for you committing to a number! 10 is a good number!

WWDave: I believe in burgers every once and awhile! Good for the soul, but not the heart! Once in awhile is ok......keeps us all sane.

Beth

Beth -- I have a terrible time counting calories as well. The most luck I've had with that was using a site like CalorieKing.com or SparkPeople where they counted for me and (in Calorie King) all I did was drag-and-drop the food I'd eaten into an online log. I hate trying to figure out what to do with meals I eat when I have no idea what's in the food (like restaurants or church socials) or when I mix ingredients and have to calculate calorie contents. Yuck! Good luck -- and tell us what works for you. I'd love to get better at it.

Good morning guys and princesses.

Counting calories and such really seems a pain in the butt and time better spent doing a little longer on the workout. I might just be to simple minded but that just seems overwhelming to me. Like Wendy said everything is mixed anyway. When you eat simple healthy food like some fish and some steamed veggies and a salad it should be fine to just eat it and not worry about analizing it. Maybe I just don't get it but that seems so hard to try to keep up with.

Happy for the day:

Have an awesome day y'all, I'm of to work, must make Disney money.

Okay, time for me to get back on the band wagon of healthy eating. With the back acting up and the family away, I have been doing a terrible job in the eating department. (Easier to just buy food out and it really hasn't helped the back feel any better.) 20 weeks until the Donald and I really need to drop some more weight. I am down about 20lbs overall since I started (including whats come back on in the past 5 days or so). So, I am starting over again today to get back on track. By the way, I have been watching this thread, but try to keep up with and post to the weekly and walkers thread. I just don't know how much cross posting the same kind of info on various threads creates boredom to people following them all. I am here with you all, though, whether posting or not.

I'm with Dave, counting calories is a pain in the rear end. That's why I liked the Dash Diet, immediately, it tells what a serving size is and then tells you how many servings to eat. All I have to do, essentially, is keep track of the number of carb servings, because I am a carbaholic! And the ratio to carbs to protein to fats to veggies and fruit is all built in. Less thinking. I don't like to think about food. I just eat clean and watch the portions and that's that!

Bill, buddy, yes get your butt back on that wagon. Dude you have to!

Erica and I started our Goofy training today with a 5 miler at the park. A big problem for us is with the training both of us are hungry all the time. We try to keep it healthy but we aren't much help to each other when we are both hungry.

Dave:hippie:

Starting week 3 of WW and day 1 of Mickey Training. Gosh this is alot to keep track of. I got on the scale yesterday and lost another pound so now am back to the 5 pound weight loss. I will say the capris I wore today are a little loser.

Beth--- You know I am a firm believer in weight watchers and don't you think you could just monitor your carbs and proteins that way. It is easier to count points then calories. Math is not my strong point so I would mess up counting calories, I have enough trouble with the point system.

Dave--- I am trying to talk someone into getting me a diet pepsi and a burger and delivering it to me during those LW over 10 miles. :rotfl2: I get so hungry that I could eat anything at that point.

Nancy

Ok, so counting calories is a BIG pain. I would like to be able to do it consistently for a week to see how many calories I am taking in, but this not the week to do it. With this 1/2 marathon coming up on Sunday, I want to chill out and not worry about it. I will consider next week!

My marathon is now 1 month away, and I am getting nervous.....eating right is paramount but what exactly should I be eating? A constent search!:confused3

Beth

Eat complex carbs and veggies and fruit and lean meats!

It is hard to lose and be that active. Good luck, I am sending you the best vibes I can!! :goodvibes
