Work Vacation issue. WWYD?

But aren't you thinking about how the change affects you? ;) Yes, that sucks for folks that have built up their seniority. But in 10-20 years no one will really know the difference.

My company (before we sold to corporate) used to allow us to bank sick days (up to 30). When you retired or left the company, you'd get $$ for the unused time. When we sold, they wiped out all the accumulated sick time with no $$. At least your vacation policy change doesn't cost you money.

You are right, I am thinking how the change effects me! We wanted to be able to pick the days we wanted. These days people don't stay at jobs very long, So I guess that is why i dont think it is fair. You stay with a company long term there should be some perks.

How much vaca time do you get and how much do new hires get?

Six weeks ( My husband works every weekend and every holiday except christmas,) New hirings get 2 weeks, provided they stay a year ( High turnover) It has only been the last 2 years that he finally got to pick any week he wanted. It is a large place and there are around 20 people that can potentially pick the same week. Now the policy is 4 weeks in the prime vacation time ( holiday weeks, and April 1 thur Sep 30 are considered prime)

I'm guessing there are still some perks. But I have a question... was there a certain time 2017 "opened" for vacation requests? Did your DH submit the request when he could?

Understood. But you said "you stay with a company long enough you should get some perks." Your husband does get perks, he gets 6 weeks off, compared to the 2 weeks that new employees get.

Oh I didn't mention he works midnights and the days off are split. On the day you don't have to go out that night, you have to stay until you are finished. So sometimes you start at 12:30 am and you don't finish until 5 or 6 pm and that is suppose to be your night off. So basically that happens of both days off. So I guess we look at the vacations we can finally do things together.

yes they get their vacation schedules according to senority ( allowing the 4 weeks in the prime) You have one week from the time you get yours to turn it in. Usually sometime in the fall of the year preceding. If you do not turn it in you go to the bottom of the list.

Then I'm confused. Where's the problem? What was the change that was made?

You could previously pick any 6 weeks you wanted. As i am typing this, i know it seems like WOW six weeks. But that is only 6 weekends off in a year.

WHere my son in law works they used to let the senior folks choose all of their vacation tie all at once. No more. They can choose two weeks, and hen it goes around to the rest of the group. It was a huge morale buster the old way. Now the senior people still have the best choices, but they cannot take every "choice" time period off. This is especially important when you consider that in his job there are blackout dates due to increased production.

A recurring problem I have seen with vacation restrictions is there are not enough weeks open for everyone to get all their vacation. Those restrictions usually come from a department head, and when it is all said and done the Business office tells those managers to make sure everyone gets to take all their vacation, even if it means blowing up their restriction.s

The company my DH works for gives 2 weeks after 1 year 3 weeks after 7 years and 4 weeks after 14 years. At most there are 4 guys who work in the night warehouse department who would have 4 weeks since my DH is number 5 and only has 11 years. During the slow times they can have 4 out on vacation at a time during the summer months which is the busy time. The rest of the year it is 6. This allows them to have enough people if someone needs to be out for another reason such as a funeral, sickness, jury duty ( since night crew works till the trucks are all loaded it can sometimes be 3 am or later so they don't have them come in if they had jury duty that day. It is not safe for someone to work till 3 am report to jury duty at 9 am sit their till even 2 pm and then report to work 2-3 hours later especially when they are operating pellet jacks, skid steers, loaders, ect).
They full weeks first starting from the top down and then go back for individual days ( My DH takes off our kids birthday if they fall on a work day, and Easter for example) but you don't have to schedule all your days on the sign up. They can get a day off later just if you want to take a day in the summer you better ask for it on the sign up round at the end of the previous year start of the current year. Mid November asking for a night off because DH forgot about our anniversary until his supervisor asked him a question about when his anniversary was ( thinking anniversary with the company) and he said the date and the boss went I thought you started in a different month and DH went oops I didn't do anything over the weekend to celebrate with my wife. Supervisor said you want to use a vacation day you can.

when that happens where I work.... you can carry over 10 days to the following year or get paid out. Some do this intentionally for the extra money for Xmas.

We can carry over 1/2 our vacation.
I've never worked for a company that will pay you for the vacation time. It has been suggested, but seems every manager who has been asked found that to be a very offensive idea. They want you to take the time.

That's because of the budget. They have budgeted to pay you for 'x' vacation time. Let's say it's 3 weeks. Now, if you take your three weeks, the budget matches (you work 49 weeks and get 3 weeks vacation, that's 52 weeks). But lets say you only take two. You want paid for the extra week. But you're now going to work 50 weeks and want paid for 3 weeks vacation. That's 53 weeks. The budget doesn't match.

When i finally had some seniority i would take
4th of July week
Another week in July
A week in august
Thanksgiving week
Christmas week
But sometimes i would switch it up and take two weeks at christmas instead of thanksgiving week and just use some personal days thanksgiving week to make it a 5 day weekend.
I loved our system-even when i was junior and got the crap weeks because i knew eventually i would get anything i wanted. And when i couldnt get a week in the summer i could still strech out 4th of July week by taking the holiday off plus 4 personal days if i wanted to use all my personal days at one time.

Yup

Well good thing u don't work in my profession because you'd be looking for a new job quite often
Just like my bosses say everyone is replaceable.

Thx for all the replies. Hopefully management will resolve the issue. Not my problem anymore.
A couple of my co workers and I talked about the situation since I first posted
The MOB should have talked to management first
Sat down had a heart to heart
My daughter is getting married , I need this week off , is there any way?
Blah blah blah

Instead MOB texts all of us (coworkers) to not take said week her daughter is getting married
Spouts off then at work if I don't get the week I'm quitting , in front of boss which ticked her off understandably
It hasn't happened too often but I do remember people being off 2 at a time for special circumstances,
We used to have extra staff to cover in these circumstances but over the years jobs have been cut so the dept isn't as flexible as it once was.
I guess time will tell.

Also found out the wedding is in punta Cana . The couple just got engaged last summer , date for wedding was just picked .
Vacation weeks first part of June are easier to come by.
Since our kids are usually in school until later in June
Bride teaches in MD. Not sure what their school schedule entails
But the Aug date is now set in stone
MOB has her reservations already. So if she doesn't get it, I guess she's quitting

Hey OP, how did this turn out?
