Words that bother or irk you when you hear them

A little history - https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smar...n-saying-ax-instead-ask-1200-years-180949663/ -

"It is not a new thing; it is not a mistake," he says. "It is a regular feature of English."

Sheidlower says you can trace "ax" back to the eighth century. The pronunciation derives from the Old English verb "acsian." Chaucer used "ax." It's in the first complete English translation of the Bible (the Coverdale Bible): " 'Axe and it shall be given.'
Yea I don’t care.
I’m not old, I’m not English,
I think the Bible is fiction

Just because people have been doing something wrong for 1200 years, doesn’t make it right! Just means Darwin has been too busy to “reach out” to them yet.

And if someone tries to AX me anything, my first reaction is to GLOCK them

Here a hug you might need, RC. Actually two, here's another.

  • Impactful
  • End result
  • Lived experience
  • "ground" for "floor" and vice versa
  • "verse" instead of "versus" (now a thing among sports announcers)
  • and most of the others already posted

Staging, as in house staging for a house sale. It's a house, it's lived in, it's not a stagnant museum.

Not all houses are being lived in when they're for sale. Mine wasn't, but they just (badly) photoshopped furniture into the listing photos instead of staging the house. 😄

No worries. If I thank a person for something, it's not because I was worried. It's because I appreciate what they did. Do they think I was worried that I was imposing or putting them out in some way? It just seems like a ridiculous response to my saying "thank you."

Guilty. I like saying it because "you're welcome" feels so stiff and condescending somehow, to me.

Preggers / Preggo. And, like another poster, I hate it when someone says "we're pregnant." Not possible in any way.

Ask, in noun form. "That's a pretty big ask." What's next? "Does this task make my ask look big?"

TBH - "Everything I'm saying is probably a lie, but just know that I'll preface my sincere thoughts with 'TBH'."

Deep Dive, Unpack, Bandwith (in the non-technical usage), Paradigm Shift.

Prolly, hubs, wallah (voila), sammie, fur baby, using verbs as nouns (that's a pretty big spend/ask), invite instead of invitation. I'm sure there are many more, I just haven't thought of them yet!
