Went to my Allergy specialist yesterday. I had the skin test. Well my back was super red and many allergies. He gave me my Rx's and I asked him about wood or laminate flooring being better for people with allergies. He said its better and if i have carpet it might be better to get new flooring. He also gave me a magazine for tips and things to do for my home like blanket, pillows for allergies etc.

So when he gives me my rx slip. I joking say "oh can you give me a RX to give to my insurance for new flooring...lol!"

He looked at me with a serious look and said " you can get new flooring and get a Medical tax write off for it due to your allergies"

Is this true???????? Has anyone done this before??? If this is so what other stuff can i write off on my taxes.. special blankets, pillows, vaccums?

I also have a Flex acct would that cover hypo allergentic items?

My allergies have gotten so bad these past 2 years. We put tile in our halls and dining area. our den and livingroom carpet was replaced because the carpet was old when we moved in but we didint have money for new carpet until last year. Our carpet was over 14 years, that how long weve been here and who knows how old it really was. Anyways we didnt have $$ to do our rooms. I really regret getting the new carpet know instead of tile or flooring but oh well.
My allergies are worst at night and in the morning so I've been thinking about getting some laminate flooring in the bedrooms. Dh has a bad habbit of stuffing his side of the closet and under the bed. Our bed is to heavy to move so it doesnt get vaccumed underneath. I 'm sure its a dust pool under it.

So if this is true that i can get new flooring due to my allergies/asthma and write it off as a medical then I'm gonna do it in a few months or if theres a
12month or 18 month deal at lowes or Home depot.

That would be pretty awesome if that's a tax write off! We are redoing our floors because DS is allergic to our house. There are air filters all over our house, new flooring, replacing beds, pillows, stuffed toys and even repainted to see if it helped somehow.

Well it sure would be great. Hopefully someone will come along and let us know. My dd also has allergies so thats why we figure the bedrooms would get done.

I need a new vaccum but gonna look into one of those allergie ones. I know when ia sked for a good vacum dyson was mentioned but not sure if it had the special feature for allergies. My dh brought in a new sports team blanket into our bedroom and it was causing my allergies to go nuts, I couldnt undestand why I'd start coughing...it was the darn blanket!

I was going to check out khols to see if they have any hypo allergentic (i think its whats its called) blankets and pillows

That would be nice, but no you cannot deduct the cost of hardwood floors because of allegies or asthma. Tons of people have allergies and asthma and that type of deduction would be abused.

Our daughter is missing half of one of her lungs and she also has asthma. We are looking to install hardwood floors, but no tax deduction.

Well thats why I'm asking. I was shocked when my doctor mentioned it. I'm sure if this is true , you would have to get some type of letter from your Dr. saying he recommends it. I'm sure theres there would be a limit of amount that would be covered otherwise people would do it and get the top of the line.

I figured it wouldnt hurt to ask. I just dont have simple allergies. He tested my lungs and it was at 60%, I'm on inhalers, 2 nasal sprays and allergy pill that he wants me to take everyday. He also wants me to get the shots but I told him lets see how the meds work. In the past 8 momths i've been to urgentcare with allergy/asthma coughing all do to allergies issues 7 times

No you cannot take a tax deduction because you have allergies and want hardwood floors.

You might want to familiarize yourself with IRS Pub 502. For medical expenses which are deductible, you can only deduct those expenses which are 7.5% or more of your annual gross income (AGI).

It's best not to rely on your physician for tax advice.

I don't think anybody is saying to do it just because they want hardwood floors. We are having to turn our entire lives upside down because my son has open sores covering his body from allergy exposure. He will wake up in the morning bleeding. It's not a want issue, this is a dangerous situation for him.

For a vacuum check out Miele

As a FWIW, when my mom had wood floors installed, whatever they used (she's long gone, so I can't ask her for more details than what I remember from ages ago) offgassed FAR worse and FAR longer than any carpet she had EVER had. It was absolutely awful. So be careful.

Thats why i came here to ask. I thought maybe he knew something i didnt but i knew someone here would know. He said it was a medical write off so maybe a decution or medical credit. Thought i'd ask
The reason for wanting laminate(much cheaper) is because after reading these boards and a coworker told me its good for allergies. Well the coworker said it made a difference in her son.
I'd rather have carpet than allergies

People think allergies are just running nose or sneezing. I get bad sinus headaches that hurt for days. I cant take advil cold and sinus meds because it raises my liver enzymes. I do sneeze but what scares me is when i get the tight lungs and cough and feel like i cant breath and have to go in for breathing treatment and meds. no fun! Its scarey for me imagine kids!

so people please dont think I'm trying to cheat the IRS.

Awe, poor kid :( That is really difficult. Have you been to a biomedical doctor/functional medicine doctor or allergist that looks at the "whole body" and is more of a natural type allergist rather than traditional? Sounds like he has major environmental allergies.

A GREAT book written by Kenneth Bock, "Healing the New Childhood Epidemics, Autism, ADHD, Asthma, and Allergies" Talks lots about allergies (and I am not talking about a running nose, I am talking major allergies)

He sees an allergist for now. We actually just redid his bloodwork. It's getting confusing because his allergens seem to keep coming and going and changing. His blood and skin tests are even fluctuating along with responses. A month ago he accidentally had butter and broke out terribly, over the weekend his sister gave him some and nothing! Last week's bloodwork is negative for milk while a few months ago it was "high level." I thought he had started to sort of stabilize but I guess not. We know dust and mold have been really getting to him, hence all the flooring and furniture changes. Next time we go in I will ask if he has a recommendation for any sort of specialist that may be able to help more.

Sorry to hear your son has to go through all that. As an adult I just have the allergies that affect my lungs, and coughing. Sometimes itchy or hives. The hardest for me is the tighteness in my chest. Tonight i went to get reflexology and there were different plants in there. Well tonight I just feel like i cant a full breath. time for inhaler.
As for your son its hard not knowing. I really hope they find what is cauging his allergies so they can give him soemthing to help him be comfortable. Please keep us posted.

The way I read their info on capital expenses, if the allergies are disabling, the floors would be deductible to the extent that they do not improve the value of the home.

That is correct. The problem would be that by the time you factor in all of the reductions to the deduction, it probably wouldn't result in any lower taxes.

I am very familiar with dealing with allergies and asthma and there are many ways to reduce allergens in the home without replacing all of the carpeting.

Please feel free to post any tips for reducing allergens!Last night I had a rough night at bedtime. I'm so trying to get dh to go through his junk and declutter. This weekend I plan on asking him to help me move the bed so i can vaccum under it. Do u have hypo allergen blankets or pillows? If so where is the best place to buy.

I'm at the point that I want any lil junk out of my house. I've been decluttering to eliminate and that even triggers my allergies from the dust. Dr. said this spring will be bad for people like me

The short answer is, yes, you can deduct it. However, that being said there is a sidenote to that.

It can be deducted if you have a note from your doctor that deems it medically necessary. You need to make sure that you have a note from your doctor. Even then however, the IRS can come back and ask why you are taking this as a deduction.

The key is that it has to be deemed medically necessary.

I work in an accounting office and asked my boss about this and that was the answer that she gave me. She's going to do some more research and if I find out anything different I will let you know.

There are many ways, but it's a quite common recommendation for a doctor to make. It's a simple change but quite effective.
